Thanks, Brande…it’s great to be back! Claimed by the Spymaster is the story of a Russian actress snared in the web a British spy casts to catch a ruthless traitor. Here’s a little about the plot:
Russian actress Valentina Baranova travels to England to marry, but it’s anything but a love match. Betrothed to a cunning and ruthless English lord, she’s the sweetener in a deal that will put stolen British documents in Russian hands and curry the Czar’s favor for her father. Determined to flee her loathsome intended, she flees him—and promptly falls into the hands of his most bitter enemy.
Spy for the crown Alec Jameson, Lord Carrington, is on a mission: unmask the traitor responsible for his brother’s death before the blackguard can further betray Queen Victoria’s empire. Capturing Valentina to use as bait, he spirits her away from London. Despite his efforts to resist the beauty he’s snatched from his enemy’s grasp, Alec claims Valentina for his own while she lays siege to a long untouched part of Alec’s existence—his heart.
I also enjoy contemporary romance. I’m working on a contemporary inspired by Pride and Prejudice and I’ve completed a short contemporary about a breast cancer survivor rekindling a steamy relationship with a man she thought was long gone from her life.
How did you come up with the plot for Claimed by the Spymaster?
The plot for Claimed by the Spymaster was inspired by the old British series, the Avengers, and the movie that followed. Ralph Fiennes was utterly hot as John Steed in the movie. Pairing the cool British agent Alec Jameson with a fiery Russian heroine created sparks and conflict, and ultimately, passion. Was it easy to decide what challenges to throw at Alec and Valentina?
The challenges facing Alec and Valentina flowed naturally from their conflicts. Valentina’s father, a spy for the Russian Czar, capitalizes on Valentina’s success as an actress as a cover for his travels through Europe buying secrets on behalf of his government. When his latest deal with the devil tangles them with a high-ranking English traitor, Valentina becomes a pawn between a man motivated by greed and the British agent out to unmask the traitor at any cost. Torn between her feelings for Alec and her loyalty to her father, Valentina must follow her heart while surviving the traitor’s wrath. I have to admit I loved writing this story! What else is in store for the Claimed series?
I’m working on a novella set in the American west, Claimed by the Gunslinger, and I’m brainstorming a Steampunk setting with a skypirate. I’d love to know what readers might be interested in seeing. I’m also thrilled that Claimed by the Captain is now available in a wonderful anthology of pirate-themed stories by Scarlett Scott and Eliza Knight. The anthology’s called Pirate’s Past and it’s now available as part of the Ahoy! series from Ellora’s Cave. Three steamy pirate stories in one volume…how awesome is that!
If the series was going to be made into a TV series or film, who would you like to see playing Valentina and Alec?
Ooh, love this question! For Alec, I’d have to cast Ryan Gosling. He’s so sexy and intelligent and athletic, while for Valentina, I’d think Rachel McAdams would be a fantastic choice.Do you have any other projects you are working on?
I’m working on an erotic novella inspired by Jane Eyre…Michael Fassbender’s brooding performance in the latest incarnation of Jane Eyre has inspired this retelling. Are you a full time writer or do you have a day job? How do you divide your time?
I divide my time between my writing, my day job as a librarian, and spending time with my wonderful hubby. We have a blast when we’re together, so it’s a great balance. If you could live during any period in time, what would that be and who would you be?
The Victorian Era would be my first choice…such an exciting time for women! I’d love to spend time in the shoes of a brilliant and adventurous journalist like Nellie Bly.
Do you have any questions you would like to ask the readers?
Absolutely. First, what’s your favorite era…which time period draws you to a book? What draws you to a book? What do you prefer - ebooks or print?I love to hear from readers. Contact me at tarakingstonromance@gmail.com, or better yet, friend me on Facebook and follow me on Twitter.

Around the 1700s to the late 1800s! I'm not sure why 1900 sounds so...unappealing though. Haha. 1899 sounds WAYYY more romantic than 1900. :P

Hi Tara! Great interview, I look forward to reading your work; I've seen the Claimed series around a lot lately and it's on my list to read! :D
January 12, 2012 1:04 PMI have to agree with CYP here--I'm drawn more towards the late 1700s and 1800s, but for some reason I've never been terribly interested in the 1900s. Perhaps it is a sign that I belong in the past, and the 1900s seems too modern to my brain?! I don't know. LOL.
Enjoy,

I like the era of King Arthur and Camelot. I think that was a very romantic period. Please enter me in contest. I would love to read this book. Tore923@aol.com

I must admit that I love reading stories of all differnt eras because each one brings the itrigue and moreys of the era to the stories.
January 12, 2012 3:11 PMI like reading several books in one time period and then reading several in another (i.e. Victorian and Regency). To me if you don't "experience" the different eras the stories don't have as powerful an impact on a social and political level.
I can't wait to read Alec and Valentina story and I love what I found out about their book in this post! All I can say is "WOW" bring it on!

Hi CYP,
January 12, 2012 4:01 PMIsn't it funny how that works...you're right, 1899 is a lot more romantic than 1900...I really enjoy reading about and writing stories set in the Victorian Era. Women were able to do so much more in society than in the past...such an exciting time!
Thanks for commenting,
Tara
Hi TBQ,
January 12, 2012 4:03 PMI agree...for some reason, 1900 sounds modern, but 1899 doesn't. The human mind looks for patterns...I suppose since all of us who are old enough to read this blog were born in 19__, it doesn't seem like the past.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Hi Tore,
January 12, 2012 4:05 PMOh, I find that era very romantic...I've considered setting a story during that period, but wow, will I need to do some research. One author you might want to check out is Margaret Mallory...she's written some great stories set in that period.
Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Jeanne,
January 12, 2012 4:11 PMLike you, I enjoy reading stories set in many eras. I also enjoy American set historicals, particularly those during the Civil War...such conflict, and so close to home. I grew up in Virginia, so I was surrounded with the history of that era (as well as the Revolutionary War era...with Yorktown a hop, skip and a jump away!)
Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Audra, Linda, and Mary,
January 12, 2012 4:12 PMLike you, I love the Victorian Era...I love reading Regency as well, but the entire "Sherlock Holmes" era is so exciting to me...plus, when I'm writing, I get to picture Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law ;)
Mary, Scotland is such a wonderful setting. I'm researching a story set in the Highlands.
Thanks for stopping by!

January 12, 2012 4:31 PMMy husband is a history "buff" so I end up reading all sorts of history and historical fiction books as well.
He is related to one of the colonial governors of Rhode Island where we live and I'm related to Ethan Allen and English colonial official John Rolfe who married Pocahontas.
Needless to say living in New England we are surrounded by historical sites but I love do love going back to my background in England and Scotland. My middle name is Hastings and my maiden name was Ryon and have other other relatives that came from Inverness and Glasscow.
You must have so much fun researching for the background of your stories.
I am not so informed as to be able to answer this question! LOL I dont know when eras start and end. I only know when I read a book and I like it or dont. Sexy, romantic, fun, surprising, magnetic, unpredictable stories and characters will over ride the location or time, always for me. :-) And a great cover will get me to pick that book up to begin with! LOL Especially a sexy guy in a kilt, tub or cooking! LOL
January 12, 2012 5:56 PMMy favorite setting is in the 1800's in the American West.

Hi Anita,
January 12, 2012 10:43 PMThe west is a great setting! I love westerns, both in romances and in movies. One of my favorites is Tombstone...boy, wouldn't I like to be a heroine who reforms Johnny Ringo ;)
Thanks for stopping by!

Hey Krazymama,
January 12, 2012 10:45 PMThere is something about a guy in a kilt, isn't there? And a man cooking...be still my heart! I love it when my hubby cooks...he has no idea how hot he is :)
Thanks for stopping by,

I'm drawn to Regency England. I am fascinated by the etiquette & courting rituals.

I read a lot of books by Georgette Heyer in my younger days and the Regency period is still one of my favourites. But I love other periods too so.....:o)
January 13, 2012 9:16 AMtamsyn5@yahoo.com
I'd say Victorian because it was more the time where men decided to be romantic and recite poetry :P and also I do love the art works of the Renaissance era. What nice ways to show affection :)
January 13, 2012 10:05 AMThanks for the chance! :D
