A Rancher's Promise by Marie Rochelle

A Rancher's Promise by Marie Rochelle is the March 15th release from Phaze books that all about Amerie and Kyle. And what a fun and tremulous ride it was. Stuart drops her off out of the blue at Kyles ranch and it looks like Stuart has some serious issues that need to be dealt with. Thing is that Amerie and Stuart aren't talking to Kyle and letting him know the big picture which just down right pisses him off. Already a grumpy guy his attitude towards her is horrific. Nasty, rude and pretty much tells her to get off his property and out of his life.

Truth is that he is so attracted to her that he can hardly breath and with his ego getting in the way, he desperately yearns for her, desires her with a fierce longing that a man desires a woman. His mate, his one for the rest of this life.

Amerie has fled a violent life only to leave her beloved mother behind with a monster. Knowing she had to get out before she sunk deeper into the monsters clutches, an evil man that knew no mercy.

Each day, no matter Kyle's venomous words and threats to kick Amerie off his land he comes closer to letting her in his heart. There is something about her that calls to him. She is a good person, despite the fact that she isn't ready to tell him what mess Stuart has gotten himself into. Each day they both lay down their barriers and open up to each other until the air crackles with such electricity and heat that they both can no longer deny the underlying passion that has bubbled over like an over active volcano.

Hot, hot, hot love scenes that will steam your windows and two fascinating characters who not only fall into bed, but fall in love, deep and fast. But the connection between the two is so dynamic that you can't help but be swept away on their journey with them. But danger is on it's way to their front door and is ready to pound down the door.

I had the honor to read with many thanks to Crystal @ Phaze.

Ever since her friend Stuart suggested he wanted to hide her at his aloof older brother’s ranch, Amerie Palmer was truly expecting the worst and almost backed out at the last minute. However, the man who opened the front door was the most handsome and sexiest male she had ever laid eyes on.
But Kyle Houston had been hurt in the past and his mistrust of women ran deeper than his love for his ranch.
Amerie knew she should stay away from Kyle because he wasn’t being very welcoming to her. However, she just felt beneath the tough exterior there was a man who craved love and she could be the woman who would give it to him.

Giveaway and Guest Author Aylssa Aaron!

Please welcome to Book Junkie, author Alyssa Aaron's who is here to talk a little about her erotic romance His Perfect Submissive !

If someone were writing a story about Alyssa Aaron what would your blurb say?
At first glimpse Alyssa Aaron doesn’t look like someone that writes erotica with a BDSM flavor. She doesn’t wear leather, or black (other than in an effort to hide her more than ample hips). In fact, she looks more like someone’s Sunday school teacher than an author of erotic romance. Alyssa is quiet, reserved, more inclined to sit and listen to the conversations going on around her than to actively engage…unless she has something of import to add, then she can become quite animated.

Alyssa is drawn more to the internal workings of people, their emotions, what makes them tick, than to their appearances and this comes through in the books she writes. Though she writes erotic romance with a degree of steam she never loses sight of her characters, their thoughts, feelings, and motivations. This focus which seems as natural to her as getting up in the morning earns her reviews like: “HIS PERFECT SUBMISSIVE is not just a fascinating story, it’s a study of human nature with irresistible characters and situations that were alternately horrifying, inspiring and thought-provoking” from Romance Junkies.

Can you tell us a little about your newest release His Perfect Submissive that isn't in the blurb?
Ultimately His Perfect Submissive is a story about learning to trust…not just someone else…but one’s self as well. In His Perfect Submissive Kara is put in the position of having to face her worst nightmare in order to save her brother and ultimately her mother who is in poor health and who would not survive her brother’s trial and subsequent incarceration.

Kara was kidnapped and raped when she was a child. She never received counseling, her family never really recovered from her ordeal, and as a result the ordeal and avoiding the memories, avoiding the panic attacks that still come when a man is too close or she catches an unexpected whiff of familiar aftershave has remained as the primary force in Kara’s life.

When Slade offers her one chance to save her brother (marry him and become his submissive) she thinks that the hardest thing will be having sex with Slade…especially kinky sex. What she learns though is that Slade won’t let her hide from him, or from the ordeals of the past. When she can no longer hide from the past and she must confront it she begins to heal. She finds that as scary as trust is, she also likes the feeling. She likes the power she gains over her past as she follows Slade’s lead.

What was your inspiration behind the creation of His Perfect Submissive?
I should probably lie here and make up something (creative license and all that) but the truth of the matter is that I have been interested in power exchange, dominance and submission, spanking, and BDSM for many years. Through the years I’ve read many forums, Yahoo Groups, and other posts about women with backgrounds that involved abuse, molestation, rape, etc., who were drawn to the lifestyle. I found it odd that someone with abuse in their background would search out a lifestyle that included bondage, flogging, spanking, and submission. It seemed odd to me, and yet I was intrigued. His Perfect Submissive came about as I mentally worked on the pieces of how that would work… I created a character with a background so chilling most of us couldn’t even imagine it…put her in a plot in which she couldn’t escape the dominance and submission aspects, and then watched to see how she (and Slade) dealt with it. I did not really know how it would turn out. There were many points at which the characters surprised me.

What was your favorite scene to write in His Perfect Submissive?
My favorite scene to write in His Perfect Submissive was the scene in which Slade learns the truth (or at least a partial truth) about Kara’s background. It’s their wedding night…he’s decided not to push her for sex but she’s so nervous, so jumpy, that he decides maybe it’s best to get the first time over with so that she can relax. (He thinks she is jumpy and nervous because she is a virgin – he has no knowledge of her past.) He seduces her…gives her an orgasm…and she begins to reciprocate – orally. He grabs her head as she is pleasuring him. This triggers a panic attack…the very thing that Kara has feared all along. Avoiding panic attacks has largely limited her life…and here she is…vulnerable…puking…dizzy…weak…

I like the scene because it is emotionally tense. Kara is so broken…and Slade gets the first glimpse of what is really ahead of him in the marriage. Though there are places where the groundwork for trust is laid before this this is a major turning point. Slade’s reaction to the panic attack is that it’s bad, it would be nice to avoid them in the future, but at the same time he won’t allow Kara to run away and hide as she’s done for the past twenty years.

Do you usually cast your characters (a mental picture) before or after you have started writing?
Yes, I usually have a mental picture of my characters before I start writing. Visual appearance of characters is a minor piece for me though. I am much more intrigued by what makes them tick emotionally, mentally.

Does it help inspire you and take the story in a different direction?
Not really. I usually know the characters well before I start writing. Sometimes they do things I don’t expect them to do, but it doesn’t have anything to do with their appearance.

If you could trade places with one of your characters, would you want to and who?
No, I wouldn’t want to trade places with any of my characters. Kara has such a dark past…so much pain in her past that I wouldn’t want to trade places with her. Slade is a dominant and I am more submissive so I wouldn’t want to trade places with him either. I do love their story though.

What accent is sure to make you swoon?
I like the southern accent and I like the British accent. Both could make me swoon in the right setting.

The house is on fire and you only have time to grab one book …… which do you take with you? (Cannot be the one you are writing)
If the house was on fire I wouldn’t take any books. Books are replaceable, or at least I don’t have any that are not easily replaceable via Amazon. Assuming hubby was able to get himself out I’d concern myself with getting my cats out. We have four totally indoor cats and a bunch of once feral cats that have indoor space in the basement and outdoor space outside. With so much cat herding I’m sure books would not really be a thought at all.

What was the most challenging thing you’ve done in the name of research that might have been out of your comfort zone?
I’ve not really done anything challenging for research for this book…nothing outside my comfort zone…but then I have a pretty large comfort zone. My husband teases that he is the head of the research department…and indeed he is.

Please share with us something that readers would be surprised to learn about you.
I can’t think of much that would be a surprise at this point. I share most things that are going on with me at the Black Velvet Seductions Readers Blog at http://www.blackvelvetseductions.com/readers_blog/ there are not many secrets.

How can the readers stay in touch with you online?
Readers can stay in touch with me through the Black Velvet Seductions Readers Blog at: http://www.blackvelvetseductions.com/readers_blog/ I typically post there under my real name Laurie Sanders but Laurie and Alyssa are one in the same. Readers can keep up with me and everything that is going on at Black Velvet Seductions at the blog.

If you could ask readers any one question, what would it be?
I’ve always been interested in what causes readers to choose one book over another. I think that it’s different for every reader. But I am always fascinated by the answers to the question what about the blurb, the cover, the interview, the reviews, the trailer convinced you to read His Perfect Submissive – if you did read it. If you didn’t – what kept you from reading it?

Kara was the victim of a brutal rape that occurred when she was seven. The event destroyed her family and left her fearful and distrustful of men.
When Kara's brother embezzles $30,000 from Slade's company, Kara goes to Slade’s office determined to talk him out of going to the police.
Slade wants a peaceful, obedient, submissive with whom to share his life and in Kara he glimpses what he wants. He seizes the opportunity and makes Kara an offer she can't afford to refuse. The only way she can save her brother from certain prison is to accept Slade's marriage proposal and become his submissive.
Kara faces her wedding with anxiety. She can't tell Slade she can't submit sexually without risking her brother's freedom, yet she doubts she'll be able to keep her promise to be a submissive, obedient wife.
This romance explores the role of trust in even the most mismatched of partnerships and explores the complex connections between dominance and submission while it demonstrates the power of real love to heal even the deepest wounds.

EXCERPT:

“Are you feeling better? Is talking helping?” he asked as he maneuvered the SUV off the exit ramp.

At the bottom of the ramp he turned right and followed the sign that advertised several restaurants in that direction.
“Yes it’s helping. I don’t feel quite as scared. I still feel—” he cast a sideways glance at her, mesmerized by the tangle of emotions that played over her expressive face as she searched for the right word.
“Uncertain?” he supplied. “Steak okay?” he asked as he turned the car onto the frontage road that served several fast food restaurants and a steak house.

“Steak sounds wonderful. No, not really uncertain, although that’s part of it I guess.”
He pulled the SUV into the Ned’s Steakhouse parking lot and parked. “So, if it’s not uncertain?”
“More like—lost—.”
“Uhm—Lost huh?” He pondered her choice of words, wondering what she meant by lost, what she still needed from him that he hadn’t given her. He killed the engine and turned in the seat so he could give her his full attention. “Talk to me out feeling lost Kara.”
She sucked in a deep breath and dropped her gaze to her hand that was still enclosed in his. He stroked her with his thumb.

“I feel like I don’t know anything.” Her voice was earnest. “I don’t know where I fit in this whole dominant submission thing. I don’t know anything about being submissive or what that means to you.” Her voice rose and caught and he thought for a moment she was going to cry. He longed to pull her against his chest and wrap her in his arms but she was too tense, her breathing too ragged and he knew that such a move would only make her pull away.
He knew she was used to knowing where she fit and that she was probably also used to feeling confident of her abilities. He hadn’t meant to, but he had taken that away and left her feeling uncertain and inadequate.
He wished he had it to do over again, and could take the time to make things right between them instead of rushing her into the marriage as he had, but he didn’t have that luxury.

“Dominance and submission is complex Kara. It’s different for every couple that does it. I cannot explain what it will become for us, partly because it will depend some on what you want it to be too. It’s the kind of thing you’ll have to experience to really understand.”

“Yes, but I’m afraid I’m going to mess everything up before I get there,” she sighed.
Her voice was so solemn that it cut at him. He stroked her cheek. “There is nothing to mess up Kara. I know I dumped a lot in your lap the day I asked you to marry me but really all I want from you right now is to earn your trust and get to know you better. The rest of it will fall into place over time.
Okay?”
She didn’t know how it happened or when she had stopped fearing him and had started trusting him, at least a little but his reassurance soothed her. He stroked her cheek and she nodded her understanding. Then his mouth pressed against hers. She tensed, anticipating the breathlessness and the terror as the memory of being held down, her breath cut off by someone larger and stronger teased the edges of her consciousness.
The kiss wasn’t like the ones that she remembered. This one was a gentle caress that coaxed more than it demanded. Slade’s mouth didn’t hamper her ability to breathe, didn’t cause her to feel dizzy or to black out.
She relaxed a little, bemused by the gentle stroke of Slade’s tongue along her lip and the command to open her mouth that he whispered against her lip.
She opened her mouth, unprepared for the soft stroke of Slade’s tongue as it teased her mouth. The unfamiliar intimacy sent a stab of heat to her center.

She was shocked by the warmth that filled her and by the lack of terror. There was no fear, no dizziness, no nausea, no panic attack. Only sweetness and the sense that she was okay, that Slade wasn’t going to hurt her.
She lifted her hands to his broad shoulders, liking the solidness of him beneath her hands. She didn’t protest as his tongue slid into her mouth, teasingnan intimate dance of liquid warmth in its wake.

Her mind raced. He’d been kind and gentle and matter of fact when he’d explained his feelings about dominance and submission and what he wanted from her. The whole day he’d treated her with kindness and respect. He hadn’t belittled her when he could have. He’d remembered her headache and gotten her medicine, he’d cared that she preferred Mountain Dew from the fountain rather than a bottle. It all combined making her feel soft and warm, cared for, and taken care of in a way that was completely new to her.

She clung to him feeling grateful to him for helping her brother and for trying to make her feel comfortable in this new marriage. His kiss deepened, his mouth urging hers to open more as one large hand slid up her back and beneath the curtan of  her hair to caress the tight spot at the base of her neck.

She opened her mouth, allowing his tongue to find hers again. His hand kneaded her tight muscles, easing the strain that had overwhelmed her. His tongue explored her mouth engulfing her in unfamiliar pleasure that made her open to him, admitting him, like a flower opens to admit the sunshine.

She felt his hand move as it slipped beneath her sweater. She shifted slightly, moaning a protest that was swallowed up by his mouth. “Um—please. Slade—no—” she murmured, twisting to avoid the touch of his palm as it slid up her rib cage toward her breast.
“Shhh Kara, I just want to make you feel good,” he whispered against her neck as his hand stilled. His other hand stroked her hair and her neck.

She heaved a sigh of relief, the knowledge that the hand beneath her sweater had paused that he was waiting for her permission to go forward eased her fear and made her feel more comfortable. The knowledge that he would stop if she insisted made her feel safe. His hand felt good where it rested against her rib cage. She both wanted him to touch her and wanted him to stop.

“Relax and let me make you feel good Kara,” he whispered in her ear as his hand began to slip slowly up her rib cage toward her breast.

She wanted to protest but her breath caught in her throat as his large, warm hand closed over her breast.

KICKING BOTS by Vijaya Schartz

KICKING BOTS is Book Three of the Ancient Enemy sci-fi romance trilogy by Vijaya Schartz which I have to say was a very cool, sexy and entertaining futuristic love story.

What if you thought you were something you were not? For Dr. Melissa Campbell, her entire life is about to change. Not knowing who to trust she discovers that she alone carries the anti-dote to an alien plague. In an attempt to spread her remedy all over San Francisco her plane is shot out of the sky, only to be rescued by the uber sexy, rambo military hunk of a man who just happens to in a boat in the middle of the ocean. Who just happens to be there to rescue her and her alone. ... Bennett. Sexy, balls to the walls Bennett. Ladies man, his own military militia and a devilish sense of humor.

Not to mention he boat is packed with some seriously dangerous and deadly weapons that wave off a minor alien attack. Yeah, that all happens in the first few chapters.

What comes next is a fantastic futuristic, or call it a wild alternate reality other dimension. Humanity is in danger and the good doctor and her dashing rescuer are in the battle of their lives, a battle for the world as they know it and enemy's at their door calling themselves friend. Who to believe? What to do and in the end what is love worth? Those are just some of the battles that Bennett and Melissa have to trudge their way through.

A sensational and fantastical alternate universe was painted and laid out for me with every wondrous word. I really enjoyed being taken away into the lives of the characters as they weaved their way through emanate death, every lie and betrayal, every scary new path they took on their journey to get to the truth and save the world as they knew it. An ultimate sacrifice will have to be made in the end that will either tear them apart or solidify their love forever.

Dr. Melissa Campbell, researcher at the San Francisco Center for Disease Control, requests help to protect her precious vaccine, one that could end the deadly alien plague. She didn't expect a crazy renegade like Bennett for a bodyguard. She hates military types, and this genetically enhanced super-soldier is pure testosterone, hot-headed, quick-tempered, impulsive, and downright impossible. But these are dangerous times with riots in the streets, and rumors of alien invasion. In a breathless race against time, experience the decisive battle for humankind, one that will decide whether Earth belongs to humanity, or to a powerful alien race.

A 10-MINUTE ESCAPE IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND?

WE HAVE AN APP FOR THAT!
Let eChook take you away

The best of two worlds have merged to bring the overworked and under-rested 10-minutes of transcendent bliss. Award-winning short story writer Tessa Smith McGovern has wedded the restorative nature of getting lost in a story to the immediacy of modern technology to bring readers eChook. More than brain candy, eChook offers apps full of well-written short stories that soothe the soul like 10-minutes of literary gourmet chocolate.

Taking from the idea of the chapbook -- small, single-chapter books that were the latest technology in 16th-century England -- McGovern developed eChook, an app that turned her linked short stories into digital chapbooks. She wanted to reimagine the short story genre for a generation that does too much and rests too little. “Life-affirming, thoughtful stories can help us relax so we can attend that next meeting, collect the kids or greet our families with more energy and joy,” McGovern says.

There are several ways to enjoy eChook. Readers can buy full-color chapbooks from the app store in almost a dozen ways: on their iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android, from http://www.echook.com/ or iTunes, and coming soon on Kindle or Nook. Choices include collections of short stories linked by a single theme (such as Memoir) or collections of linked short stories that follow engaging characters through different adventures. Each app features information pages with enriched content such as “About the Author,” and “Memoir and Fiction.” eChook offers short stories that are light in your pocket and on your pocket book.

Until March 31, writers may submit pieces for “Short Stories, Vol. 1.” Stories of approximately 750 - 2,000 words that are selected for publication will receive up to $100 for rights; for more information, visit http://www.echook.com/. “I believe that everybody has a short story in them,” McGovern says.

Don't forget to sign up for the eChook Newletter which is filled with LITERARY DELIGHTS’, which includes a classic short story and a writing tip that illuminates technique as employed by the author, news and special promotions.

Guest Author Jodi Thomas and Giveaway!

Jodi Thomas will be releasing the fifth book in the “Whispering Mountain” series will be released April 5, 2011 and I couldn't be more excited! She is here today at Book Junkie to talk about the next book in the series, TEXAS BLUE! So, please enjoy Jodi's post and the TEXAS BLUE book trailer..... don't forget to enter the contest to win one of three copies!! Also, don't forget to catch my review later today for extra points to win!

I hope all my fans will step into Texas history and enjoy the adventure. From the day I was walking in the Hill Country near Fredericksburg, Texas, the story of the McMurray family has been playing in my head. I am very excited about TEXAS BLUE, the first book in the new generation of the Whispering Mountain Series.

I opened in 1875, with two friends parting ways one stormy night in Austin. Duncan, a Texas Ranger, is off to fight at the border and Lewt, a gambler, plans to find a wife among one of Duncan’s three rich cousins while his friend is away.

Duncan, called Duck when he was a boy, is wild and fearless. He leaves his law practice to join a raid at the border. Lewt has never done anything brave and never plans to. He just wants a respectable wife.

Lewt joins a group of men Duncan hand selected to travel to Whispering Mountain and meet his three female cousins. Though Lewt knows his friend would never introduce a gambler to his rich relatives, he wants a chance for more than just a life in saloons.

TEXAS BLUE is filled with adventure and laughter. The proper young ladies are not what Lewt expected. The raid at the border is based on a raid that happened in 1875 that the Texas Rangers still talk of, though today the line between fact and legend blurs. When I mixed the two stories running at once they made a great mix.

I hope readers will love this story as much as I loved writing it. Though TEXAS BLUE was my 31st book, I was a little surprised that I still love writing as much as ever. Some stories come easy, some seem more like work, but with this one all I did was turn on the laptop and hang on. The story took off all on its own. My characters were so strong at some points they took over the story.

Wishing you many hours lost in reading.

Jodi Thomas

Gambling man Lewton Paterson wants to marry into a respectable family, even if it costs him his friendship with Duncan McMurray. After fleecing a train ticket from one of the three gentlemen picked to call on Duncan's cousins, Lewt makes his way to Whispering Mountain. But seducing a well-bred woman is harder than Lewt thought, and he realizes that to entice a McMurray sister, he'll need to learn a thing or two about ranching—and love.

Starred review from Publishers Weekly

"Bestseller Thomas's fifth Whispering Mountain American historical (after 2009's The Lone Texan) is another winner. When Texas Ranger Duncan McMurray tells gambler Lewton Pater-son that he's sending three men from good families to court his three cous-ins, Lewton, wishing for a respectable life and family, decides to take the place of one of the men. He meets the three ladies, but spends his time with Em, the ranch overseer--who is really one of the ladies and never intends to marry. When news reaches the ranch of Duncan's capture in Mexico, Lewt and Em set out to save him. Tension rides high, mixed with humor and kisses more passionate than most full-on love scenes. Fans will be delighted by this series continuation".

The Heart of War author Lisa Beth Darling Interview

If someone were writing a story about Lisa Beth Darling what would your blurb say?

"The True Life Tale of a crazy woman trying to make her way in crazy world."

Can you tell us a little about your newest release The Heart of War that isn't in the blurb?
There are so many things to say simply because blurbs are forced to be so short that I've gotten used to looking at the novel in 'sound bytes' of a sort, I suppose. Believe me, I thought that would never happen! I struggled and struggled with trying to condense it all down to 5 paragraphs or so. Not an easy or enjoyable task by any means. LOL

I'm hoping that giving you a few sample paragraphs that aren't available anywhere online will suffice. The following is rated G—sorry to those of you who were hoping for something hotter.

Between his fingers appeared two tickets with a very familiar symbol on them.  “Bought and paid for.”  Ares assured as he held them in front of her watching her eyes go up and down with the logo of two crossed red socks.  “Something called box seats.”

“Box…”  Alena plucked them out of his hand and looked at the seating.  Right in front of the first base line.  They looked authentic to her.  “How did you get these?  Where did you get these?”  According to the tickets the game, against the New York Yankees no less, was scheduled to begin at noon.  “What time is it?”

Happy that he could make her face light up so brightly, Ares chuckled all the way to Fenway Park, where he enjoyed several beers and hot dogs.  Popcorn was tasty but it got stuck between his teeth and he did not like that.  The crowd was exhilarating, their exuberance was highly infectious, and even though he didn’t have much of an idea as to what was actually going on in the beginning, he was quickly swept up by the game.  So did Alena.

“YOU SUCK!”  She yelled to team currently in front of them wearing jerseys that read ‘Yankees’.  “GO HOME!”

“That was a little rude, don’t you think?”  Ares asked as he finished off the last of his second dog.  Hardly had he ever heard say a bad word about anyone let alone unprovoked.

“You’re supposed to do that, it’s a psych-out.  You should understand that concept.”  The batter hit the ball…crack!  Alena stood up in mid-sentence.  “BUTTERFINGERS!”  She yelled as she cupped her hands to her mouth, “YOU CAN’T CATCH!  MISS IT!  MISS IT!  YOU STINK!”  The ball slipped right over the top of the fielder’s glove and he went chasing after it while the batter made it to second base.  With the rest of the crowd, Alena held up her fist and gave a great cheer as she protruded her index finger in the universal We’re-Number-One gesture.  “Besides, it feels good.  You try.”  Touching his arm just before Ares opened his mouth she added, “Don’t be too mean.”

“I’ll just keep watching you.”  And he did for the whole game.  Alena loved what she called ‘the crack of the bat’ and each time one of the Red Sox players got up and hit the ball, she jumped to her feet and cheered…along with the few thousand other people in the park.  When the ball went over the wall, something Alena called The Green Monster though it didn’t seem very threatening to Ares, the crowd broke out in a strange chant; Na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na, hey, hey, hey…good bye.   It wasn’t like any chant he had ever heard before.  During something called the Seventh Inning Stretch, someone started playing an organ and the whole crowd stood up, linked arms, and sang a tune Alena sang along and said it was “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.”

Mortal Gatherings and Rituals were so strange.

Alena and Ares waited around in Fenway Park for a while after the game; Red Sox- 9 Yankees-1 and watched the crowd thin out.  “You don’t want to battle them,” she advised, “and just zapping out of here would be bad.”  She sat next to him and rested her head on his brawny shoulder.  “Thank you for a lovely day.  I had fun.”

Ares kissed the top of her head as he watched the crowd.  Other than to make brief eye contact and give a nod—which was infrequent, no one paid much attention to them.  Some of those who walked by did have a quizzical look in their eye.  Alena’s face was snuggled in the nape of Ares’ neck; all they could see was her beautiful silver hair.  It was clear that some of the mortals did not approve of what they saw as a great age gap.  They probably wondered if he was after her money or something similarly trite.  Unfortunately, those were the observant ones.  As they passed by the God of War and his new Bride didn’t see them at all.  They were just two more blank faces in this crowd.

Here he sat, in one of the most well known cities in the most powerful country on planet Earth surrounded by sheep and knowing that in a few short weeks, Cernunnos would have obliterated them, he would have subjugated them, and then enslaved them.  They were so naïve and complacent.  Right now, they were off to their shiny cars, their lives, and their dinners, oblivious to the fact that the man sitting near them could turn them to ash without ever getting up.  From the way most of them were smiling and chattering away, Ares thought ignorance must truly be bliss.

On their way out of the park, they passed a vendor.  Alena turned to Ares and held out her hand.  “What do you want?”

“Money, you said you have some.”

He should have known that, Ares often saw women hold their hands out to their men this way before legal tender was handed over to them.  “After my wallet already are you, woman?  That didn’t take long.” He joked and took a black leather wallet from the back pocket of his blue jeans.  Alena didn’t take count; she just plucked a fat wad of bills out of it before skittering off to the vendor leaving Ares standing behind her looking at his lightened wallet.  He stood there watching her make her purchase, he watched the vendor look past her and stare at him only to turn back to her and then dig something out of the case.

“Look, change.”  Alena said brightly when she came back to where Ares stood looking absolutely adorable with a brand new Red Sox cap on her head and pennant in her hand.  She handed back the money that was left over.  “I got you this.”  With a sly grin, she held up a jersey that looked just like those worn by the men on the Red Sox team.  Ares snatched it out of her hand and tossed it over his shoulder.

“I’ll try it on for you later.”

“Oh, I was hoping you’d say that.”  Alena sighed and wrapped an arm around his waist as they made their way out of the gates.

What was your inspiration behind the creation of The Heart of War  ?
It's just us girls here, right? The biggest inspiration behind The Heart of War is a man whose name was Kevin Smith. No, not the chubby funny fellow also known as Silent Bob. The other Kevin Smith who portrayed Ares on two little shows called Hercules-The Legendary Journeys and Xena-Warrior Princess.

What was your favorite scene to write in The Heart of War  ?
I was going to say it's the first love scene between Ares and Alena, but truthfully, it's the scene (above) at Fenway Park when they're watching the Red Sox play. The rough draft of The Heart of War was available online, I put it up chapter by chapter just as it came out of my head and so many people came in to read it that it actually hit 10,000 individual readers in ONE month! I was shocked! Dumbfounded! I started to blog that I should do my best to get Ares on the Red Sox since he was hitting so hard they could really use him. Although it works amazingly well, the whole thing, the entire trip to Boston, is really an inside joke between The Big Guy (the Muse), my blog readers, and me.

Do you usually cast your characters (a mental picture) before or after you have started writing? Does it help inspire you and take the story in a different direction?
I usually have the main players when I start writing, minor characters come as the story needs them and sometimes they progress to not-so-minor characters and develop well. I've finally learned that I never take a story anywhere, the Muse does. It's my job to follow where he leads even when we're arguing and I'm trying to tell him something isn't going to work or questioning why we're doing it. In the end, he's always right.

(Oh, and yes, I do realize that classically speaking the Muses are female. However, my particular Muse is definitely male.)

If you could trade places with one of your characters, would you want to and who?
For just one day, one day only, I would like to trade places with Ares. Not just because he's an Olympian and he has all of these really cool powers to do anything he wants, but just physically speaking. I'm rather slender so I've never been a physically strong person. Ares is so tall and broad with all of those rippling muscles. I'm also a very small woman—at 45, I still have to hoist myself onto the kitchen counter to get something off the top shelf of the cabinet. So I'd love to know what it feels like to walk up to the counter, open the cabinet, and just reach in and grab whatever it is I want. That alone would be quite good. J

What accent is sure to make you swoon?
Years ago I would have said a British accent. Oh, if a man had a British accent and turned his attention my way, I just melted. I don't know why, maybe I'm just getting a little deaf in my advancing years? An accent alone isn't enough to make me swoon any longer. I'm more interested in the overall package. With Age Comes Wisdom…right?

What was the most challenging thing you’ve done in the name of research that might have been out of your comfort zone?
For The Heart of War I had to describe Ares' Torture Chamber for one scene. In it, Alena, is bringing a captive Druid to a cell and as she's in the room she's shocked by what she sees. In her mind she knows she's fallen in love with the God of War but this is her first introduction to really seeing it, seeing what Ares has done throughout his long life right in front of her, it's undeniable what he's done with these items designed to bring only agony.

For that scene, I had to research old torture devices. At first, it was kind of cool, I came across the typical items; Iron Maiden, The Stocks, The Rack…regular stuff. Then I came across harsher things and found The Pear of Anguish. I nearly threw up when I read the description of what it was and how it was used. I knew we had to have it for the story. Alena had to see that!

In the end, The Pear of Anguish came to play a large part throughout the story and it came to symbolize many things but finding it and understanding it then ultimately understanding that, yes, my beloved Ares had used this item, was a very jagged little pill to swallow.

Please share with us something that readers would be surprised to learn about you.
I obsessively play word games on FaceBook. My favorite is Whizz Wordz! I'm addicted to that stupid game. I even play it as I write!

The Joy of Working the Lode

It’s funny that I only recently stumbled into writing MMF erotic romance. I’ve actually been writing MMF scenes for years, and then when it came time to ship the manuscript to my publisher, I’d delete or tone down the MM stuff to the point where, I hoped, readers could barely tell anything “untoward” was going on. I’m overjoyed that MMF activities have finally risen to the top of the popularity pile! I thought I was the only one who liked reading/writing hot scenes involving two men. I always figured hey, if one man is sexy, aren’t two men double the fun? But I thought I was in the minority, so I self-censored these scenes. I was always sad to basically eviscerate a huge part of who these men were.

My “straight” sex scenes were always fairly steamy, anyway. This was a strange thing to discover in a historical fiction book—explicit sex. I had no idea it wasn’t normally done. “Well, they had steamy sex back then, didn’t they?” I was bowled over when a friend told me that one of the most popular themes in erotic romance these days is ménages with one woman and two men. Glory be to thee on highest! What a breakthrough! I can finally write what I love, keep my historical voice, and plumb the full depths of these complicated, ornery, and magnetic men…and the women who love them.

So I had 100,000 words of research notes all involving the California Gold Rush of 1848. In straight hist-fic that’s not unusual to get so detailed about your historical facts, even though of course you only wind up incorporating less than 1/10th of this knowledge. I think it does show through in the basic flavor of your setting to have such a thorough background in it. So after six or more months of research, my old publisher wasn’t interested in my intense tome about how the Mormons came to San Francisco in 1846. Not wanting to waste all that time and research, I decided I had enough information for a trilogy of erotic romances! Once I realized that, I just zoomed through the writing of Working the Lode. It immediately found a home at Siren Publishing, a good match for everyone’s particular interests.

And it was fun. Seeing as how I now feel I know every detail of everything that ever happened in 1848-49 California, I rarely had to stop to look anything up in my notes. It was such a dramatic, tragic and colorful time, it just leaps off the page. Theodore Hittell wrote in his voluminous History of California: “There certain never was before...and never will be again thrown together under such peculiar and interesting circumstances, such a body of choice and pickled spirits.”

What is so attractive about MMF romances? My own opinion is that adding another man to the mix doesn’t constitute a threat to the heroine. Because there is no comparing physically or emotionally with a third man, a heroine will not feel that her position or standing is being usurped. In Working the Lode I wrote:

It was evident from the way Valenzuela had dumped her on the ground to grab Cormack that the debauchee favored men over women. That was fine. What woman would feel threatened when another man stroked and playfully swatted her man’s colossal erection? There was nothing to be jealous of when there was no competition between her and another man—in this case, Valenzuela. How could one compare her to Valenzuela? One could not. It would not matter if Valenzuela’s hair was silkier than hers, for example. Another woman, now, that was a different matter altogether. Zelnora would have blown the head off any other woman who dared put a fingertip on Cormack’s arm.

What is the attraction for women to these ménage romances? I like to think it’s simply a case of “the more, the merrier”! I am glad they are finally making their way to the forefront of the wonderful world of romance.

Going to California. It’s three thousand miles nearer to hell.

Mountain man Cormack Bowmaker meets up with Zelnora Sparks on the eve of California’s great rush—the discovery of gold. Zelnora is fleeing from her mentor, the mighty businessman Brannagh. They are being shadowed by the most scandalous Spanish bandit in the frontier. Joaquin Valenzuela wants to rob them of their gold, but soon discovers a desire for much more. Californians call for the pickled head of Valenzuela in a jar, but his passion for the two Americans overpowers his zeal for mayhem.
They band together in their quest for riches, love, and the good life. Bowmaker is a sharpshooter, his aim true. Valenzuela will slit the throat of anyone who wanders by. Zelnora knows where to find the gold. And Brannagh will do everything it takes to stop them.
They are about to discover the frontier—within themselves.

A CREED IN STONE CREEK by Linda Lael Miller

Today I welcome to Book Junkie author Linda Lael Miller highly anticipated new series the first in the contemporary “Creed Cowboys” trilogy with A CREED IN STONE CREEK.  The one and only acclained author known as The “First Lady of the West” is back and this new series is better than ever!!!!

About A CREED IN STONE CREEK:

When single attorney Steven Creed becomes the guardian of an orphaned five-year-old boy, he trades his big-city law firm for a ranch near his McKettrick kin in the close-knit community of Stone Creek, Arizona. Taking care of little Matt and fixing up his run-down ranch house with its old barn loosens something tightly wound inside him. But when Steven takes on the pro bono defense of a local teen, he meets his match in the opposing counsel—beautiful, by-the-book county prosecutor Melissa O’Ballivan. It’ll take one grieving little boy, a sweet adopted dog and a woman who never expected to win any man’s heart to make this Creed in Stone Creek know he’s truly found home.

Can you tell us a little about your newest release A CREED IN STONE CREEK that isn't in the blurb?
In large part, this book is about deciding who you want to be and going for it.

What was your favorite scene to write in A CREED IN STONE CREEK?
One of them was the opening scene, when Steven finds the little boy up in the middle of the night, waiting for his parents to arrive.

Do you usually cast your characters (a mental picture) before or after you have started writing? Does it help inspire you and take the story in a different direction?
Yes, but they always develop into a bonafide character in their own right.

If you could trade places with one of your characters, would you want to and who?
Yes, I’d trade with Maddie, in “The Man from Stone Creek”, if it meant I could spend a lifetime with Sam O’Ballivan.

The house is on fire and you only have time to grab one book …… which do you take with you? The one I’m writing now!

What was the most challenging thing you’ve done in the name of research that might have been out of your comfort zone?
A few years ago, I went on a cattle drive in Montana. I enjoyed every minute, but we roughed it and rode horses every day and got caught in the rain.

How can the readers stay in touch with you online?

Interview and Giveaway with author Jean Hart Stewart

I would like to welcome to Book Junkie today, author Jean Hart Stewart, she is making her rounds on her virtual tour for her newest release: a historical romance entitled For Love is New. So please give Jean a warm welcome, enjoy the interview and don't forget to enter the contest!!

If someone were writing a story about Jean Hart Stewart what would your blurb say?

This one’s almost too easy. One of the luckiest people in this world.

Tell us a little about your newest release For Love is New that isn't in the blurb?
This book finally accomplished what I’ve long wanted, to write a historical that reflected the period accurately. Did research off and on for several years for this one, and am so pleased to see it published.

What was your favorite scene to write in For Love is New?
The ending of course. Christian and Juliet had been through hell, to the point even I wondered if they’d ever have a happy ending. When they finally did it was so wonderful to know they were finally together.

Do you usually cast your characters (a mental picture) before or after you have started writing? Does it help inspire you and take the story in a different direction?
Not usually, but in this book Christian was definitely Colin Firth. That stiff British upper lip was essential for Christian, and my image of Colin never let me down. Not the usual for me though.

If you could trade places with one of your characters, would you want to and who?
Not really, my heroines are always smarter, braver and prettier than I am. I really can’t come up to their standards/

Do you ever run into someone who says, YOU WRITE WHAT !!” ?
Definitely, and mostly with an disbelieving look. Even my kids give me that look once in a while. I think my erotic scenes are especially hard for them to take.

The house is on fire and you only have time to grab one book …… which do you take with you?
No question, Pride and Prejudice. I can and have read that over and over.

What was the most challenging thing you’ve done in the name of research that might have been out of your comfort zone?
The sadism scenes in For Love is New were hard for me. Eroticism I understand, sadism I just don’t.

Please share with us something that readers would be surprised to learn about youThis is a toughie. I’m pretty darned normal. Love opera, does that count?

How can the readers stay in touch with you online?
http://www.jeanhartstewart.com/, Twitter, Facebook, My Space. Do write me,anytime.

If you could ask readers any one question, what would it be?
Oh lordy, I’d like to ask them so much. Wish they’d go on line and tell me what they really like in romance fiction. Character, emotion, plot????? What makes you buy a book? Cover, blurb, word of mouth, price? I could go on and on, but will exert a little self-control her and stop. Just comment asking if the readers have any questions for me, OK? Love being interviewed, and enjoy feedback and getting to know a reader.

Lord Christian Cherne, recently invalided out of the Penninsular Army, is looking forward to the pleasures of London. He has one duty to discharge before he searches for a mistress. He must offer his protection to Lady Juliet Sloan. Paul Sloan was killed in battle, leaving Christian a horrifying letter of his sadistic treatment at the hands of Roger Gullis. To his dismay, Christian finds Gullis sitting in Lady Juliet’s parlor when he comes to call. All his plans must now concentrate on keeping Juliet safe. Christian further suspects Gullis of being a traitor and his fears for Juliet increase.
Juliet is attracted, but suspicious of which man is the traitor. As attraction between Juliet and Christian grows, Gullis turns cruelly vengeful.

Will Juliet and Christian be able to thwart Gullis’ plans to help bring Napoleon back to power, even as he finds wicked retribution for his rejection by the two lovers he has come to hate?

EXCERPT:
As Christian threw her up on her horse, and then mounted himself, Juliet looked for Boney. He was sitting by Maggie and made no move to come with them.
“Let’s go, Boney,” said Christian. To everyone’s amazement, the dog didn’t budge. In fact he moved even closer to the small girl.
“Well,” said Christian, “that’s a surprise.”

Maggie gave the dog an embarrassed push, but he stayed by her side.
Christian laughed. “If you can stand his company, I’d be delighted, Miss Maggie. We’ve been wondering where to house him.”
Southworth looked as if he were about to have a fit of apoplexy. “Maggie, that’s his lordship’s dog.
Tell him to go along with his master. I’ve taught you better than this.”

Before she could answer Christian cut in. “It looks to me as if Maggie and I might share the ownership, Southworth. You can’t direct affection, you know. I think it’s a wonderful solution, if he isn’t too much of a pest. My mother thinks he’s much too big
for the house.”

Southworth, still embarrassed, looked first at the girl, who was reluctantly taking her arms from about Boney, and then at his lordship’s wide smile.

“Let me know if he gets to be too much of a bother,” Christian said and rode off, still grinning.
Boney watched Juliet and Christian leave. The big dog didn’t move except to follow them with his eyes, then he sighed and sat down on Maggie’s feet.

Maggie’s arms wrapped around his neck once again.

***GIVEAWAY***
Jean will be giving away a download of one of her books (winner's choice) to one randomly chosen commenter!

HOW TO FLIRT WITH A NAKED WEREWOLF by Molly Harper

HOW TO FLIRT WITH A NAKED WEREWOLF by Molly Haper has now made it up there with one of my all time favorite books. Fun, sensual, cleverly written and just downright fantastic.

I am on a real role with shifters, I can't seem to get enough these days. Mo and Cooper made this book fun for me, what is a girl to do when the sexiest man in town turns up on her front porch naked as a jay bird? Not only that but with a bear trap around his ankle. As you can imagine it was no small affair, not to mention him turning into a were right in front of her. That could shake any girls feathers and I have to say Mo's attitude about it all is pretty freshening.

After all is is in a town full of mostly men in no where Grundy, Alaska especially with the ever so grumpy Cooper. No matter how much he tried to be rude and standoffish to Mo I am pretty sure she falls a little more in love with him. I know I did. He is away from his clan and there are a lot of things that are about to change for both Mo and Cooper. More than they can ever imagine.

One thing I loved about Mo, she was completely identifiable for me. She wants to be loved, bruised after a broken engagement and ready I think to find a little peace and happiness with a vulnerable and open heart. Cooper seems at times that he is playing head games, but really he believe how he acts with Mo is purely in self preservation. Oh you silly little man! If only he would get it faster, but then you wouldn't have so many fabulous constructed chapters to read. This is a book that will do the heart good. Laughter is sexy and the banter and delightful characters just work!

There is also so wonderfully clever cast of character that make up the residents of Grundy, that really helps the book come full circle and paints a charming picture, if not a little wacky at times of this small Alaskan town.

Northern Exposure
Even in Grundy, Alaska, it’s unusual to find a naked guy with a bear trap clamped to his ankle on your porch. But when said guy turns into a wolf, recent southern transplant Mo Wenstein has no difficulty identifying the problem. Her surly neighbor Cooper Graham—who has been openly critical of Mo’s ability to adapt to life in Alaska—has trouble of his own. Werewolf trouble.
For Cooper, an Alpha in self-imposed exile from his dysfunctional pack, it’s love at first sniff when it comes to Mo. But Cooper has an even more pressing concern on his mind. Several people around Grundy have been the victims of wolf attacks, and since Cooper has no memory of what he gets up to while in werewolf form, he’s worried that he might be the violent canine in question.
If a wolf cries wolf, it makes sense to listen, yet Mo is convinced that Cooper is not the culprit. Except if he’s not responsible, then who is? And when a werewolf falls head over haunches in love with you, what are you supposed to do anyway? The rules of dating just got a whole lot more complicated. . . .

About Me

My Photo
Brande
I am a working mom with an addiction to coffee, chocolate, and books.. I read an average 3 to 4 books a week to escape reality. I have setup this site to organize my own thoughts and help others when choosing what to read. Since I can be a dimwit at times I decided to keep a record of the books I read. This record turned into reviews so I would remember if I liked the book I forgot I had read. I am not particularily funny and my grammer sucks so please don’t expect much. Basically I don’t know jack about many things, but I do know what I like in a novel and what makes me want to spend my money on an author.
