Guest Author and Giveaway with Miranda Neville...........

Today I would like to welcome author Miranda Neville to Book Junkie. She is here celebrating her latest release, The Amorous Education of Celia Seaton, a historical romance novel being released by Harper Collins on July 26th. Please give Miranda a warm welcome, enjoy the interview and don't forget to enter the contest!!

1. If someone were writing a story about Miranda Neville what would your blurb say?
“A woman of surpassing genius.” No, seriously, I’d like to be described as a writer of entertaining and sexy historical romances that are a little out of the usual in their approach, but deliver the emotional satisfaction and happy endings that readers crave.

2. Can you tell us a little about your newest release THE AMOROUS EDUCATION OF CELIA SEATON that isn't in the blurb?
I have to say that I adore the blurb for this book, and that hasn’t been so for all of them. But it’s only a tiny sketch, a teaser for a nearly 400 page novel. Tarquin Compton is a dandy, the most fashionable man in London and one who holds terrible power in the social realm. Celia is one of his victims so when she finds him robbed, helpless and amnesiac, she can’t help taking a little revenge. But Tarquin is a very different man when he’d stripped of his snooty persona (not to mention his fine clothes). Tarquin and Celia share an idyllic few days, despite the discomfort of being lost in the wilderness. The real trouble starts when they return to “civilization” and the constraints and rules of society have to be faced, as well as their own conflicted feelings.

3. What was your inspiration behind the creation of THE AMOROUS EDUCATION OF CELIA SEATON?
Inspiration comes from many different places, but I can give you one example. Much of Celia’s “education” comes from a bawdy novel which is about the only thing that wasn’t stolen from Tarquin. I used a real book for this, a volume I discovered in the rare book collection of the British Library. I was researching early erotica and when I read this particular book I had an idea. Historical romance heroines often learn about sex from unspecified erotic books. I decided to do the same thing, but use a genuine text from the period. It fitted quite well into the barebones of a plot I already had in my head.

4. What was your favorite scene to write in THE AMOROUS EDUCATION OF CELIA SEATON?
If I have to pick one, it’s when Tarquin catches a fish and together they figure out how to cook it. It was one of the earliest scenes that entered my head for the book: it shows the dandy hero completely out of his element, yet managing to do what’s needed at that moment: provide breakfast when they are starving. It’s the moment when Celia thinks this is a man she could love.

5. Are there any other genres you want to tackle?
Right now I’m very happy writing historical romance. But never say never. I can imagine I might try a contemporary at some point. My writing is on the lighter side so it wouldn’t be suspense.

6. If you could trade places with one of your characters, would you want to and who?
I am, of course, always in love with my current hero, so any of my heroines. Much as I love Celia and Tarquin, I have a sneaking fondness for the couple in my previous book, THE DANGEROUS VISCOUNT. Diana is fabulously well-dressed (unlike me) and Sebastian, the bookworm-turned-hottie, is the kind of guy you’d want to be married to in real life.

7. What accent is sure to make you swoon?
I have an English accent myself, but I go for the low, sexy ones. In my mind all my heroes sound like Alan Rickman, Richard Armitage or (going back a way) Richard Burton.

8. What was the most challenging thing you’ve done in the name of research that might have been out of your comfort zone?
I’m ashamed to say I stick to research books. No galloping horses or burning buildings for me! That early erotica I mentioned. Wish I could call that challenging but I enjoyed every minute of it. Biggest problem was suppressing my giggles in the silence of the library.

9. Please share with us something that readers would be surprised to learn about you.
That’s a tough question, because, like most writers, I lead quite a boring life. You know, get up, sit in my PJs and check email, pound out my work count for the day. I eat everything except eggplant and I prefer fruit to chocolate (a fact that could get me thrown out of the romance writers’ union).

10. How can the readers stay in touch with you online?
I’m on Facebook and I love to chatter on Twitter. I also love getting emails, which you may send me through the contact page on my website.

11. If you could ask readers any one question, what would it be?
A good romance leaves me with that satisfied “aah” feeling as I finish the last page (and often have to read it again, right away). What is it about a book that makes you go “aah”?

When all the pieces fit together at the end to my satisfaction, I enjoy that 'aah' moment. The villain has got his comeuppance & the hero has got the girl. I want everything wrapped up in a nice, tidy bow.

For me, it's the interaction between the hero and heroine, all of the near misses and misunderstandings that lead them to the conclusion that they have to be together. So when they finally admit they love each other, that's the sweet moment.

My aah moment is when the hero and heroine finally overcome whatever obstacle was keeping them apart. I kind of like when they have to put in a little effort in order to be togethere.

I like it when I'm hoping two people will end up in love and it doesn't look like they will ever make it. Then all at once they overcome their differences and it ends up happy!!

When hurdles and circumstance are overcome and the H/H are together and happy. As the guy on the A-team says I love it when a plan comes together lol. This book sounds great and I love her hair. My son's hair is exactly that shade.

for me, I think it boils down to being able to "feel" the h/h's emotions & feelings as well as watching them getting to know/understand each other & realize what it is that makes the other special and for them.

All the moments that are sweet in any way between hero & heroine. The ones that give me a tug in my tummy without involving sex. Those are the best for me.

Thanks so much for inviting me here today and for the great interview questions. And what terrific responses to my question!

@marybelle Loose ends can drive you crazy!

@Margay I know the scenes with the hero and heroine are always my favorite, leading to that final declaration

@Bethie. Definitely! We don't want it too easy or there's no story :)

@ruby Love romances when you just can't see how the couple are going to get over their differences. Keeps the pages turning.

@Jean I'm seeing a trend here. Obstacles!

@Pamk LOL on the A-team. The cover artist did a gorgeous job on Celia's hair.

@gamistress Well said. Emotion is key

@Claudia. I think you said it well

@Gloria I know just what you mean - and I'm not talking about indigestion :)

@Crystal. I'd like to add that I prefer it if that doesn't come on the very last page. I like to see the H and H enjoying their HEA for a while. It's why I love epilogues (though I know a lot of readers don't)

@ Tore Well said

@Cathy M. A sensual feast, yes! with the HEA as the whipped cream on top.

Miranda -
My favorite moment in a book is when I feel like I am in the same room with the characters, seeing what they are seeing, hearing the leaves blowing in the yard outside and feeling the cool breeze coming thru the windows.

You are one of the authors that make me feel "connected" to the characters and I may at times feel like I'm the chaperone sitting at the back of the room trying to hear the gossip being said just a few steps away but it's those time you make me feel truly connected to the characters.

That is my "ah" moment.

This will sound strange, but my ‘aah’ is when I cry as I’m finishing the story. They aren’t sad stories – they have the happy ending. It’s just that the characters and story have pulled me in and I’ve become emotionally invested in the story, losing track of time in the process.

I have to really feel like everyone ended up with their happy ending and that everything is going to be great. It can't be one of those all of a sudden everything works out at the end type of thing. It has to be believable. Thanks!!

@ Jeanne - thank you so much. That connection of the reader to the characters is what writers aim for.

@ Maureen and Jane - it's so important to resolve doubts. If you don't believe in the HEA the book doesn't work as a romance.

Allie, Diane: thanks for stopping by.

@ Na. Yes! They must deserve happiness, even if one of the character starts out pretty bad.

@ Karen: a book that makes you weep from emotion is the best. Mary Jo Putney is one of my favorite writers and her books rarely fail to squeeze a tear.

@ Carrie: I'm imagining you in your hammock, all happy at a good ending!

@Johanna - Hi there! Always a pleasure to see you 'round the web.

@June Thanks for your comment

@ Virginia - yes! Going to a different world is what I love about reading.

@ Robin - another weeper :) Love it!

I consider the "ahh" moment "that warm snuggly feeling." I get that feeling if the story is full circle and has a happy ending. I hate it when a book has cliffhangers or unfinished business that will be explained in later books.

For me, it is the HEA forever at the end of the book, not a happily ever after for the moment. I never buy a book that doesn't have a HEA forever. I mean, after all the trials and tribulations the hero and heroine have gone through, surely they deserve one at the end of the story!

I leave the book feeling all satisfied as long as I can really believe in the ending. I don't like it when there are issues keeping the leads apart that are suddenly resolved in the last couple of pages without a proper lead-in.

The book sounds great, I'd love to read it.

My favorite ahh moments are when the hero and heroine finally get over the problems separating them (even if it is just temporary before the big PROBLEM happens). It gives me hope that everything is going to work out just fine for them, and makes reading the angst they have suffered is worth it.

About Me

My Photo
Brande
I am a working mom with an addiction to coffee, chocolate, and books.. I read an average 3 to 4 books a week to escape reality. I have setup this site to organize my own thoughts and help others when choosing what to read. Since I can be a dimwit at times I decided to keep a record of the books I read. This record turned into reviews so I would remember if I liked the book I forgot I had read. I am not particularily funny and my grammer sucks so please don’t expect much. Basically I don’t know jack about many things, but I do know what I like in a novel and what makes me want to spend my money on an author.
