A LITTLE HARMLESS OBSESSION by Melissa Schroeder

A Little Harmless Obsession by Melissa Schroeder is book 3 in the Harmless Series which has released from Samhain Publishing! Let me just say now that I have read this enticingly sexy book I have to now go back and read Book 1 and 2!

This is the story of May and Evan, the best of friends, but that is where it ends. Hum..... you and I know that isn't the truth. They have been in love, well lust with each other for a couple of years. Since they first met to be exact, but May isn't Evan's type of woman. He is a Dom and an alpha to the bone if there ever was one.

Someone is out for May's head though, although she is one tough chick at work, holding her own as a restaurant manager she longs to submit sexually. And if only that man could be Evan all her dreams would come true.

As the treats continue against May, Evan's protective side comes out, but it was the night that Evan's local BDSM club that rocks both of their worlds.

Evan is sexy as hell and can't believe that May is a sub, talk about dreams coming true. She is kind and sensitive as his feelings day by day grow towards a passionate and undying love for May.

It was wonderful watching the transformation of two characters who just wanted to be themselves and find that love and trust in a D/s relationship. The trust and bond between the two characters was evident and it made my heart beat a little faster each time something horrible happened to May. Although I was pretty sure that I figured it out (who the bad guy was), I couldn't stop reading as the plot drew me in and took me for a wild sensual ride. A brilliantly fast paced, erotically intense story about two long time friends who learn that sex doesn't always ruin friendship. Hot, sexy and sweet this touching and will leave you breathless!

What begins as a quest for submission becomes an unrelenting need for love.
May Aiona’s crush on sexy Evan Chambers is a bad habit that should be easy to break. It’s not like he’s ever noticed her. Looking for a safe place to release the reins of control and explore her curiosity about BDSM, May takes a friend up on an invitation to visit an exclusive bondage club—all she has to agree to is a public submission.
Evan can’t help but notice the exotically beautiful May. But despite his success, the dirty secrets of his past whisper that he’ll never be good enough for her. When Evan sees her standing in his club ready to submit to his best friend, he gives in to the thing he wants most—May as his sub. After their session, he knows one night will never be enough. But loving May isn’t easy for a man always ready to take charge. She might like to submit in the bedroom, but she doesn’t like anyone telling her what to do outside of it.
When May insists she’s not in any danger from the person seemingly obsessed with her, she ends up in the sights of a deranged stalker—with Evan possibly too far away to help.

Interview and Giveaway with Clare Austin author of Hot Flash

I am a fly on your wall today, what would I see in the day of Clare Austin?
I awakened around half six, but I stayed in bed for a half hour planning my day. The first thing I wanted to do was write this interview…and here I am. I’m actually doing this before cappuccino, so I hope it makes sense. I can hear my man (I call him Colin Farrell) bringing the cappuccino up to me and we will chat about our plans for the day. I’ll go to swim later in the morning and then out to see my horses. I have a mare with a sore back. I’ll fuss over her for a while and then ride my younger mare…maybe jump some fences if we are in the mood. This afternoon, I’ll write. I’m working on the third book in my Fadό trilogy. Selkie’s Song is about three quarters finished and I’m in the doldrums. My plan is to spew out whatever strikes my fancy and edit later. Somewhere in this day I will play my violin and study the Irish language, An Gaeilge, take my cairn terrier, Maggie, for a walk and read a chapter of Brian Greene’s The Elegant Universe. I’ve been slowly working my way through this book as I have an interest in cosmology and am intrigued by theories of time and space. Tonight “Colin” and I will cuddle, have ice cream and watch a film from our bed. Yum!

Can you tell us a little about your newest release HOT FLASH that isn’t in the blurb?
Hot Flash was the third novel I wrote in my first year of writing and before I really thought I would ever seek publication. I was writing for my own fulfillment and enjoyment. At the time I was working out at an all women’s gym. It wasn’t one of those places where twenty-somethings hang out to let everyone see how pretty they look in spandex. These were mature women for the most part. From time to time someone would call out a plea to turn up the air conditioning because she was either over her max heart rate or having a hot flash! We needed a romance for us. So I wrote it.

What was your favorite scene to write?
I loved writing the horse show scenes. This is a world I understand from the sounds and smells to the excitement of hearing my number called and the countdown to “have a good ride” and galloping out of the start box. I did have to rein (excuse the pun) myself in a bit (there I go again) because I could go on for pages with details the average, non-horsey, reader wouldn’t give a fig about.

What qualities are a must when creating your hero?
All my heroes are individuals, but I do have some requirements for what makes a hero. Brandon Sullivan is the hero in Hot Flash. When the story begins he is a financial failure, has a hot temper, and is distracted from his goals by events in his life. Here is how he describes himself to Kate… “I’m as imperfect as a mortal can be. I have a penchant for putting my foot in my mouth. I’m a terrible money manager and I like to indulge myself in fine horses and expensive whiskey. I’m probably too old to change…” That said, he is a flawed but honorable man. My hero will never tell a lie to deceive or hurt anyone. Here’s a quirk of mine…he will never smoke or chew because, if I wouldn’t kiss him, I won’t ask my heroine to kiss him either! He doesn’t have to be drop dead gorgeous, but he can’t be hygienically challenged or have bad teeth. These are my standards, but hey…I get that privilege if I’m making up the story…right?

What was the first romance book you read and how did it effect you?
The first was Shanna by Kathleen Woodiwiss and it is still one of my favorites. I had never read a romance of any kind and the explicit sexual content shocked me. Not that I hadn’t had the same feelings but the idea that someone had put those physical and emotional reactions into words on a page just amazed me. I wasn’t a naïve young thing either. I was married and had three children at the time. The story was fun, exciting and, I thought, fairly historically accurate. When I imagined myself writing fiction, it was most often historical. Then I actually started writing and my stories ended up contemporary. I do have a historical idea or two started and would, someday love to develop them.

If you could trade places with one of your characters, would you want to?
Probably not. I love the life I have. In a way I do live my character’s lives as I write them. I really feel the emotions, the joys and sorrows. It would be funny for you to see me writing and notice that I actually laugh and cry while I experience what my characters are doing. Even now, a year after Butterfly was released, I open that book and just have to chuckle at Flannery’s way of speaking and her footloose approach to life. There are some scenes in Hot Flash where I wept while writing. I have known the kind of unconditional love my characters seek but would not want to experience the loss Kate or Brandon suffered on the way to finding each other.

Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?
I do have a manuscript I really like that I have never submitted for publication. The title is Bird Watching. This was the second novel I wrote. It needs a great deal of editing and re-writing but the story is sweet and the characters engaging. Briefly, it is about a young biologist from Boston and a “cowboy” from Wyoming. The genre is contemporary romance, but it also has a touch of suspense. I am especially fond of one of the characters, a little girl named Miranda, who suffers from a condition called Selective Mutism. She doesn’t talk. I am thinking of serializing this novel on my blog rather than submitting it for traditional publishing. Not that I think it couldn’t sell, but it just struck me as a fun way to share some of my writing with my readers.

If you could ask readers any one question, what would it be?
Perhaps I should ask how readers would respond to a “free read” on my blog…like a magazine where you get a chapter every week. Would this be a fun way to read one of my stories? The other question always on my mind is how to reach readers. I do book signings in stores but, although this is a fun way to meet fans, it is very time consuming. I am by nature a very shy, introverted woman. I like to write but I don’t particularly like to promote. Virtual tours, blogs, book clubs…where do you learn about new authors?

I love it when readers contact me by email with their questions or comments about my books, but this doesn’t happen very often. Are you shy or just busy? I write my stories for you to enjoy, so I really like feedback.

Thank you for having me on your blog today.

Kate Aiello has spent her entire life trying to please others—her three brothers, her Italian mamma and her husband of twenty-five years. It isn’t insult enough she is turning fifty, and left at the side of life’s road by her philandering husband. Now she has to contend with her body’s betrayal…hot flashes!

The plain truth hits her with each thermostatic aberration—she has never been first in anyone’s life, including her own.

Brandon Sullivan has been on a downward spiral since the death of his beloved wife. Now he is a man desperate to save himself from impending financial ruin, loss of his farm and his life’s dream. He needs to get into the winner’s circle by spring or he’ll be just another poor, landless Irishmen downing his pints and bragging about the good ol’ days.

Sparks fly when Italian attitude meets Irish temper. Add two big crazy families, a barn full of horses and one woman’s menopausal hot flashes and the probability for combustion increases exponentially.

What will Kate and Brandon risk for a second chance at love?

Excerpt from Hot Flash

“So, Katie, tell me…why riding lessons?”

“It’s Kate.” She corrected him.

“What?” He looked genuinely confused.

“Kate…my name…it’s Kate, not Katie.” She wasn’t sure why it bothered her he liked to call her that. Maybe it felt a little too personal. Jeffrey had never called her anything but Catherine.

“Ah and why not? Katie suits you well, a good name for a beautiful woman.”

Nervous laughter welled up in her. “You have that ‘charming Irishman’ thing down to a fine science don’t you? Go ahead, call me anything you want.” Obviously, the man had his own opinions. It was most likely fruitless to try and correct him. She should have resented it, but his arrogance fit him like those breeches he wore. From another man, his attitude would have felt patronizing, but coming from him it was...well…titillating.

He said nothing, just looked directly into her eyes and smiled a slow, lazy grin that made Kate shiver deep in her bones.

Review and Giveaway: THE SPY WHO SAVED CHRISTMAS by Dana Marton

In Dana Marton's latest release from Harlequin Intrigue, THE SPY WHO SAVED CHRISTMAS, falling in love was never in the plan, having some hot sex with the hunky baker next door…… well yes that was definitely the plan for Lara when she headed over to Reid’s bakery.

Little did either of them know but that was going to be the last night that they see each other. Reid dies in a fire at the bakery that night and Lara is deviated, not only that but she had grown in her time with Reid to really like him, enough to give her virginity to him in one passionate and unforgettable night. As a result, she gets pregnant with twin boys. Struggling to bring her butcher shop to a success in their small town she works her butt off during the day and spending every other moment with her boys.

That is until Reid rises from the dead. Well, so to speak that is. He never died, but he was burned severely in the fire at the bakery that night. He is a spy and that night he died he was reborn into someone else for yet another case. Unfortunately he ran into Lara, beautiful Lara he could never get his mind off of. Although he thought about her often he knows that his job is dangerous and the idea of having anything with her was unacceptable.

Too bad he practically kidnaps her, to save her life of course. Now her and the babies are in danger. Not to mention that Lara is devastated that Reid has blatantly called her a liar, the boys can’t be his. Or so he thinks. When he sees them he knows, those are his boys, they look exactly like him and immediately the once jaded Reid starts to open his heart and his mind to the idea of family and love.

Overwhelmed with the very new feeling of being a daddy is put aside as the boys are taken as hostages. Lara and Reid come together and make peace with each other and their past as well as their future. If that is even a possibility. Sensuality and high drama dominate the pages of this story as you weave your way into the lives of Lara and Reid as they try to catch the bad guy, save their boys and all without getting themselves killed or the boys killed in the process.

In one unforgettable moment, Lara Jordan broke all the rules in her play-it-safe handbook and spent an incredible night with Reid Graham, a practical stranger. But before she even had time to bask in her fearlessness, a suspicious fire stole him away and left her pregnant, heartbroken and alone. Until now. .
Walking back into Lara's life after two years was never on the operative's agenda. Unfortunately, remaining "dead" was no longer an option once their baby boys were kidnapped. Now, Reid had to convince Lara she could trust he'd sacrifice his own life to bring their children home for Christmas—without admitting the mission might just come to that.

Guarding Suzannah by Norah Wilson

GUARDING SUZANNAH is Book 1 in the Serve & Protect Series by Norah Wilson is simply addictive. Thank goodness it is a series right, so there is always the next book in the series to read!

In this first book you have successful and insanely independent Defense Attorney Suzannah. She is fierce, she is brilliant and she can take grown men freeze in their step like stuttering fools with just one ice glare. She fights for her clients believing the best in them and in the justice system.

Once infatuated Detective just can't get enough, even if she does take pride in tearing most of the police department into shreds on the stand. Including him a time or two.

But now that her life is in danger Quigg assigns himself as her own personal bodyguard. Much to her complete and utter irritation. She secretly lusts after him, he is sexy as hell and out to protect her, but she fears by accepting her help and in turn the help of the police that she will become a laughing stock. Knowing that some will get a sick satisfaction that someone is stalking her and not necessarily take it as serious as the situation is.

Someone is out for blood and one of the things I loved was I couldn't figure out who the heck it was. I thought for a brief moment I knew but the ending was a adrenalin pumping roller coaster that had me glued to the page until the final word. The passion that Quigg has for Suzannah is so evident, he is simply a guy in love, or falling faster then ever. And no matter how tough and hard nosed Suzannah tries to be at times when someone wants her dead, dead, dead, she can't help but be completely vulnerable at the same time. Showing chinks in her armour isn't something she is proud of, but with Quigg he just brings out the passion in her that she has been denyng for years.

Explosively sexy, the chemistry between the two is hot, sensual and sweet all at the same time!

Criminal defense attorney Suzannah Phelps is the bane of the St. Cloud police department (they call her She-Rex for her habit of shredding cops in the witness box). She is currently being stalked, but is reluctant to report it to the police, whom she half suspects of being the perpetrators. But when Detective John (Quigg) Quigley learns of it, he's determined to protect her, at considerable risk to his career. They've struck sparks off each other in the courtroom, and he's burning to do the same in the bedroom. When the danger escalates, he has the perfect excuse to pose as her boyfriend, but the closer they get, the more the lines between pretense and reality blur.

Guest Author Dana Marton and Giveaway - The Spy Who Saved Christmas

Today I am thrilled to have Guest Author Dana Marton  who is celebrating her Oct 12 release from Harlequin Intrigue of  The Spy Who Saved Christmas!

Recently, I watched a PBS documentary titled “This Emotional Life.” [link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMshm6UpYVE] Ordinarily, I’m more into exciting, romantic, suspense-filled movies, much like my latest book, The Spy Who Saved Christmas. But I was drawn to this documentary because it explores our emotional lives. Suspense is meaningless unless the emotions are engaged, and I thought this movie might teach me something about human emotions that would help me touch my readers more deeply.

(I’m a firm believer that learning never stops. So yes, even though The Spy Who Saved Christmas is my 23rd book with Harlequin Intrigue, I will always feel that I have a lot to learn.)

Love Is a Basic Human Need

The documentary touched briefly on a disturbing psychological experiment done in the 1950s on baby monkeys. The babies were taken away from their mothers and given the choice between two artificial mothers. One provided all the food and water the baby would need but no nurturing, and the other nurtured the baby monkey but provided no food or water.

The baby monkeys chose to be nurtured. I believe this means that in some very real way, love is more important than food and water.

Now don’t get me wrong – I don’t enjoy going hungry. But if I had to, I could spend the rest of my life eating food that tastes like cardboard, and I could still be happy. I could not live happily without love. Love is a goal worth pursuing. Which, I might add, my characters do in a totally kick-ass way.

In The Spy Who Saved Christmas, Lara Jordan’s twin sons are kidnapped. Lara knows how important love is, and she will do anything to bring her boys back to the safety of her loving arms. Even if it means working with the boys’ father, the man who betrayed her by letting her think he was dead.

Reid Graham was deep undercover when he and Lara shared their one night of passion. He had no idea when he left that Lara was pregnant. Now he’s being forced out of the isolation he’s chosen. For the first time, he has something to lose: the sons he never met, and the woman he couldn’t forget.

Contest: Every time I reach a new level of 100 people who “like” my Facebook page [link: www.facebook.com/danamarton], I’ll give away an e-gift certificate to Amazon.com. So if you’re on Facebook, please come to my page and click the Like button!

If you had to decide between a lifetime of food that tasted like cardboard or a life without love, which would you choose? If you decided to eat cardboard the rest of your life, what food(s) would you miss the most? (Is anyone else getting hungry?)

Stephanie Draven Blog Tour

Today I give a warm welcome author Stephanie Draven to Book Junkie! She is shere to celebrate her latest release from Harlequin Nocturne this October!

The Director’s Cut

One of the difficult lessons I’ve learned about the book industry is that size matters. People gave me well-meaning advice to write what I love and let my muse fly free, but I had to learn the hard way that as long as books are still printed on paper there are going to be word count limits which will determine the scope of my story and how I can tell it.

As Poisoned Kisses is my debut paranormal romance novel, it was my best teacher when it came to this lesson. Harlequin Nocturne has a stated word-count limit of 75k and I was quite proud of myself when I squeaked in under that limit. Imagine my shock when my editor asked me to cut ten thousand more words. Yes, that’s right, ten thousand more words!

After I talked myself out of slitting my wrists, I got down to the Herculean task of cutting the novel. The end result? Something fast-paced and tight-as-a-drum. I can’t say I regret a minute of it. It was one of the best writing exercises I’ve ever done. It made me a better writer and the final product thrilled me.

But...and you knew there was a but coming, didn’t you...there is a little part of me that would have loved to save my darlings. I know how directors must feel when making movies and having to chop scenes. Luckily, thanks to the power of the internet, I can share with you my own Special Features, including this completely unedited, deleted scene from Poisoned Kisses. I hope you enjoy it!

Niagara Falls in winter, with its thundering river, was gloomy as the Styx. Kyra watched the netherworld entrance of mist below the tumbling water of the falls, and tried to take some comfort in that. She tried to tell herself that the New World and its spiritual variety could accommodate the powers of an Old World nymph. But North American gods were strange, and the forces of nature here were brutally cold.

She would almost rather face Ares; almost. In fact, she might have turned right around, got back on the plane, and abandoned this mission if not for her hatred of flying. And of course, this morning’s newspaper.

Renewed hostilities had broken out in the Congo and she knew whose guns were to blame. Marco’s near-fatal encounter with her obviously hadn’t given him second thoughts about gun running, so now Kyra was going to take a new approach.

What had Hekate said? That sometimes locking a wild thing in a dungeon was the only way to make it see reason? And even if it didn’t make him see reason, at least she’d be able to keep the Hydra out of her father’s hands. Ares had his vultures everywhere—it was only good fortune that had allowed her to discover the existence of the Hydra before he did. Now Kyra planned to press her advantage.

The first thing she did was rent a house in the hinterlands—one with a basement. It probably had not been wise of her to ask the realtor if the beams would hold the weight of a human male, and she had probably spent too much time in the hardware store picking out locks and security systems. Oh, the irony. She was a daughter of Ares, but compelled to build her dungeon out of parts she found at the local hardware store.

The trick was going to be luring Marco into said dungeon without making him bleed because she was not sure she would survive a second dose of Hydra poison. Marco was deadly, and she had best remember it.

Of course, all of this would be for naught if Marco didn’t come back home. And what if he didn’t? What if she never saw him again? It happened all the time with mortals—their lives were so brief, a nymph might meet a man in his youth and not see him again until he was a shade in the underworld. It shouldn’t make much difference to her, shouldn’t more than annoy or frustrate her, but somehow she knew it would be harder to accept than that.

As a bitter gust of wind buffeted her, Kyra buried her nose in her scarf and kept walking. How had a Hydra like Marco Kaisaris come to be born in this far-away, uncivilized land of Canada? She supposed there were Greeks everywhere in the world now—mostly everywhere, anyway. How else had the shrine to Hekate, at which her mother once worshipped, come to be in the heart of Italy? Even here in North America, Marco’s was a Greek family in a Greek part of town.

She stopped first at the Kaisaris family restaurant, only to find the doors to The Acropolis locked shut. The restaurant hours were clearly posted, and she had arrived during business hours, but the sign hanging haphazardly from the door said closed.

So it was happening already then. The Hydra’s father was dying, or dead already. Either way, Kyra felt the pull of her most ancient duty—one much older and more urgent than the one she had taken upon herself in capturing the Hydra.

She forgot about Hekate, she forgot about her rebellion against Ares. She even forgot about Marco. What she remembered was that she was a nymph of the underworld, and nearby, there was a man in need. Kyra picked up her pace, making the short jaunt from the restaurant to Marco’s childhood home with long strides. Somehow she knew the family would be here, and not at the hospital.

The door was open. She simply walked in and crept up the stairs to the bedroom where the old man lay dying in his bed. A woman was there too—his wife, sitting beside him. Kyra guessed this was probably Marco’s mother and when Kyra came in, the silver-haired woman with a face full of grief turned and looked right at her.

When mortals looked at Kyra, she could make them see what she wanted them to see—and in this case, it was nothing. But when the dying man also turned to look at Kyra, a flicker of recognition shining in his eyes. Kyra recognized him right away from the photo she’d first seen in Marco’s hand, but he’d lost weight, and withered.

There was nothing so sad as a strong man gone frail, and as his chest rose and fell with his struggles for breath, she saw the fierce determination in his eye. He saw her, his brows knotted in concentration, as if he were trying to place her. He was already half-way between mortal life and the next; he could probably see the outlines of Kyra for what she was, and the closer to death he came, the easier it would be for him. Meanwhile, his wife turned and stared at the place Kyra stood again, asking, “Is there someone there?”

The old man began to cough then, and patted his wife’s hand, as if to reassure her. This touched something in Kyra—to see a dying man give what little strength he had to the woman he loved. Nymphs like Kyra might have immortality, but mankind had love, and for a single moment, Kyra wished for it with all her heart.

“It’s time for your medicine,” Mrs. Kaisaris said to her husband. “I’ll get it for you, and something to drink.”

He kissed her hand before she left, that one gesture shaky and profound. Then he watched his wife walk past Kyra and out the door, a wistful look in his eye as if he thought it was the last time he would see her.

“She’ll join you one day,” Kyra said softly, her heart filling with compassion. “As a shade.”

“Do I know you?” he croaked, trying to lift his aged head from the pillow. She let her internal light shine, she lit a path into him and saw how much pain he was in. She opened her eyes wide enough that it lit a path into her too.

“Yes,” she said soothingly. Given that she’d tried to kill his son, and was now intent on throwing him in a dungeon, offering some light and comfort between the threshold of this life and the next had seemed like the least Kyra could do for the old man. “You know me. You’ve been waiting for me.”

Marco’s father blinked several times, then he sighed with contentment. “Oh yes, I see now. You’re an angel.”

Kyra sighed at his mistake. Even this very old man was too young to remember when nymphs of the underworld guided the dead. He was but an infant in the cosmic scheme of things, and now she coaxed his shade from his body like a baby from the womb. “Follow me. Follow the light of my torch.”

And with that, Kyra stretched a hand to him. Only his spirit reached for it. His real hand lay trembling upon the bed as the ethereal essence of his fingers grasped Kyra’s. “Will it hurt?” he asked her.

“Only for a moment,” she promised, and then, slowly helped pull his shade free.

The body gave one last shudder, then stilled and shrank—giving up the animating force within.

Released from pain, the old man actually smiled. Then he realized how young he was again, and it made him smile wider. “I was a handsome devil once,” he said.

“You look like your son,” Kyra said, leading him down the stairs and out of the house into the crisp air. Kyra shivered with the cold, but the old man’s shade shouldn’t have felt it. Even so, he stiffened.

“You know my son?” he asked.

Well, in a fashion. She had kissed him, tried to kill him, nearly been killed by him. If that wasn’t the true essence of knowing a human being, what was?

“Is he dead too?” the man asked, anxiety returning. “Is my son dead too?”

“No, no,” Kyra reassured him, because she felt certain that she’d know if the Hydra was dead. “But he lives a very dangerous life.”

“He could have opened a second restaurant for us,” Marco’s father said. “He had the head for business. He was a good cook too, like his mother. And he was my only son. My only son. But he decided to be a soldier, instead.”

“He liked the violence,” Kyra said, feeling the sour expression creep over her face.

“No, he watched too much news. Wanted to do something good. At least he said he did. I should have told him I was proud of him then, but…”

“What happened to him?” Kyra asked, turning off towards the Falls. There were many entrances to the netherworld, but this was the closest, and now that evening was falling, it was beautiful.

“Africa broke his heart, then he broke mine.” The dead man paused beside a tree, marveling at the way his hand passed right through it. “Yes, I think it was Africa. But maybe it was his high school sweetheart, Ashlynn Brown. Either way, in the end, someone broke his heart and then he broke mine.”

Ashlynn Brown. This was a name Kyra didn’t know. Who was she? Given the way Marco went through women now, she hadn’t expected that he’d have a former lover who had broken his heart. Marco seemed more likely to be the heart-breaker, after all. Kyra listened as Marco’s father told her how he’d started stealing caches of arms from the military, then selling them in Africa. It clearly made him angry to recount the way his son’s life once-promising life had spiraled into something that shamed him. But not once did he mention Marco’s poisoned blood, nor his ability to wear faces not his own.

“Was he always so good at . . . disguises? Even as a boy?” she asked, careful to give nothing away. Some Hydras were made, not born, and the confusion on the man’s face made her even more sure that Marco was the former.

“No, he was always an honest boy. An earnest boy,” Marco’s father said. “If a customer paid too much at the restaurant, he would always go chasing after them with the change. Always wanted to put things right. But now look at him? Now he’s rich. Rich!”

“And he doesn’t share his wealth with his family?” Kyra asked.

The old man growled with insult. “We won’t take a penny of that filthy money. I love my son, but I lost him to a world of weapons and war. I can’t forgive him. I . . . couldn’t forgive him.”

Kyra was silent. In her long experience with these things, the dead often regretted the unresolved relationships they’d left behind. Forgiveness helped them to let go, but she could see by the set of this man’s jaw, that he was stubborn. She wouldn’t argue with him.

Even so, he seemed to sense her disapproval. “What he does—putting weapons into the hands of children, running from the law, taking money from warlords—some things are unforgivable.”

No, Kyra supposed, some things couldn’t be forgiven in this life. But maybe in the next…

“We’re here,” she said softly, as the mist rose from beneath the bridge to wet her face.

“Thank you for guiding me,” he said, his face filled with wonder. “I would have been lost and frightened otherwise.”

He had nice manners, this man. How had he raised a son to be an arms dealer? It had been some time since anyone had thanked her, and it pleased her. “You’re welcome,” she said. “But before you go, you should know I’m not an angel. I’m a lampade.”

Marco’s father squinted for a moment, then the word seemed to snap something in his memory and he laughed. “So the old Greek stories are true!”

“Some of them,” Kyra demurred. “You are about to find out which ones.”

“Should I jump, then?” the man asked, his mortal fears still plaguing his shade.

“Yes, jump. It can’t hurt you now,” Kyra promised. “And someone at the bottom is guaranteed to catch you.”

Too bad things were never that way for the living when they fell.

Stephanie Draven is currently a denizen of Baltimore, that city of ravens and purple night skies. She lives there with her favorite nocturnal creatures–three scheming cats and a deliciously wicked husband. And when she is not busy with dark domestic rituals, she writes her books.

Stephanie has always been a storyteller. In elementary school, she channeled Scheherazade, weaving a series of stories to charm children into sitting with her each day at the lunch table. When she was a little older, Stephanie scared all the girls at her sleepovers with ghost stories.

She should have known she was born to hold an audience in her thrall, but Stephanie resisted her writerly urges and graduated from college with a B.A. in Government. Then she went to Law School, where she learned how to convincingly tell the tallest tales of all!

A longtime lover of ancient lore, Stephanie enjoys re-imagining myths for the modern age. She doesn’t believe that true love is ever simple or without struggle so her work tends to explore the sacred within the profane, the light under the loss and the virtue hidden in vice. She counts it amongst her greatest pleasures when, from her books, her readers learn something new about the world or about themselves. Stephanie also writes historical fiction as Stephanie Dray and has a series of forthcoming novels from Berkley Books featuring Cleopatra’s daughter.

TAKE ME by Bella Andre

To say I loved TAKE ME by Bella Andre would simply be an injustice. Now I have read Bella's HOT SHOTS and BAD BOYS OF FOOTBALL series and thought they were all keepers! But what really hit me most in this book is that Lily was vulnerable but don't call her a pushover, dispite what her best friend or her sister thinks. She does what she does out of her love for those close to her. Plus sized and used to not catching the eye of hot blooded males she is asked to walk the runway for her sisters premiere fashion show.

Scared to death, she is not confident in her body what so ever and is used to wearing frumpy clothes to hide the pounds. But really she is just trying to hide behind those big frocks so she won't be noticed. Especially by the sexy as hell Travis. Her dream man, her crush since she can remember. Too bad they hate each other.

Travis has stayed clear of his twins best friends since they were kids. The three were inseparable since their mom passed when they were young. At that time Travis distance himself from the full figured Lily, which only feed her love hate for him. He only dated blow up Barbie dolls and looked at Lily as though she was a pariah.

That is until he saw the really Lily let loose at the fashion show, and their one night together could make or break them. He is a little of a man whore. Successful and sexy he can have any woman he wants and usually scores without effort, but their one shared night sparks something in Travis, a deep repressed fire that he is to scared to face.

The humor is that to snag Travis Lily leads him to believe that his love making is sub par. Which I have to say spurred on some of the best and most humorous dialog I have read in a while. This launches Travis to plan B, seduce Lily and make sure he becomes the best lover she has ever had. Jokes on him and as she is whisked to Italy to work on a project with Travis Lily's joke turns out to be not so funny.

Spending every day with Travis, Lily is more in love than other and Travis is falling fast. Actually he has been half in love with Lily most of his life. A feeling he can no longer hide. What makes this story so addictive besides the banter between to the two love birds is the evolution of Travis as well as Lily. Travis in the respect that he became more of a man by facing up to his feeling for Lily and why he buried them for years. The death of his mother was so traumatic that Lily reminded him of her so much that he guarded himself from her.

And Lily, the confidence that she was able to achieve just from realizing and experiencing Travis' love was like watching at beautiful sunrise.

Two enchanting characters with great humor and a plot that will entrap you from page one, taking your heart for a roller coaster ride of passion, heart ache and love that will make a true love believer out of even the biggest skeptic.

An appetite for sensual pleasures must never be denied. . . .
Lily Ellis has curves--soft, beautiful curves. The kind of voluptuous body she fears Travis Carson, the man she's always loved from afar, would never crave. But Lily is about to be proven wrong. Her sensual adventure begins when, despite her inhibitions, the demure San Francisco interior decorator agrees to model a plus-size dress for her fashion designer sister. Watching this sensual beauty move down the runway with mesmerizing power, Travis can't believe it's the same Lily he's always known and always rejected. In a whirlwind of electric attraction, Lily is soon moaning Travis's name in his bed, not just in her wild fantasies. But Lily is all too aware that she's nothing like his past lovers . . . and now that she has him close at last, she's praying Travis likes what he sees and feels. Determined to beat Travis at his own game by guarding her true feelings of love and lust, she spontaneously partners with him on a business deal that takes them all the way to Italy. In the seductive warmth of the Tuscan sun, Lily is about to unwrap her real self, and play a game of desire with the hot-blooded Travis. Will she be burned by an ecstasy that's so all-consuming it has her seeing stars? Or will Travis open his heart to the sexy, exciting, and lasting love she has to offer?

LOVE ME by Bella Andre

If you read the blurb it actually tells the reader A LOT about the story, but what you can't find in a blurb that I discovered in reading LOVE ME by Bella Andre was the substance and depth of two remarkably rich characters that truly and utterly embed themselves into your psyche.

I kept thinking about the relationship between Janica and Luke and I must commend the author for really taking Luke to a place mentally that I didn't expect. It made him real, the every man, a wounded man, a trouble man who was actually hiding from life. Hiding from really letting go and allowing himself to live his life without guilt, without self abuse. He is one hell of a doctor, but working yourself into the ground and risking your career as well as the lives of others if just what he need for a wake up call.

It's just too bad he kept hitting the snooze button and not listening to those around him, to his own heart.

Janika and her feisty take no prisoners attitude has just hit Luke over the head. Just the kind of wake up call that he really needs. Her love for him is undeniable, especially when she expresses that right to him at their first sexual encounter. Avoiding each other for years and secretly lusting after each other it is time they released the passion. And boy do these two know how to light up the pages.

This second book and the TAKE ME sequel is truly the icing on the cake, I mean LOVE ME, that title alone makes you want to read Janica and Luke's story. I felt so emotionally invested in Janica and Luke I was entralled and carried away into thier world! A story filled with two vivid and gripping characters and a plot that will suck you in until the wee hours of the night. You won't be able to put it down!

It's been five years since Lily and Travis fell in love in TAKE ME....now it's finally time for Janica and Luke to get their very own happy ending.

If there's one thing that Janica Ellis is absolutely certain of, it's that she and Luke Carson are totally wrong for each other. She's a wild, artistic and outspoken fashion designer. He's a type A, workaholic trauma surgeon (who just happens to be sizzling hot and her brother-in-law!). But Janica is about to be proven wrong when opposites attract...in the sexiest possible way.

After a life-changing night in the ER, Luke is desperate for escape - and relief from his personal demons. For five years he has fought his attraction to his sister-in-law, but when he's pushed too far, he can't fight it another second. He needs her. Desperately. He's spent his whole life doing the right thing. For one night, he's going to follow desire instead. Straight into Janica's arms.

Janica can't believe Luke is finally at her front door...and that he's kissing her like he's been waiting his whole life for her. But even as their sensual connection deepens with every touch of skin on skin - and the man she always thought was such a good boy turns out to be sinfully, toe-curlingly bad between the sheets - Janica soon realizes she wants more than Luke's body. She wants his heart too. But what will Luke do when one night of extreme passion turns into an all or nothing proposition?

Review and Giveaway: CAPTIVATION by Kris Cook

CAPTIVATION is Book Two of Kris Cook's Eternally Three series from Siren-Bookstrand just released on Sept 7th!!!!!! The world of angles and demons, magic and Jinn, just not your every day ordinary day in the life for any of us, but for Eve it isn't just her imagination. No she was kidnapped by some really ruthless demons then rescued by a bunch of angles and jinn. It could really cause a girl to go a little nuts. Problem is when she came to Zone Three and under the protection of David she had no idea that the man she was slowly falling for was actually ordered to triple with her and as many Jinn as possible. David knows that Eve is one of the Bloodliners, she is genetically linked to just a few others that carry a very special gene. Being a Bloodliner means that when he triples with her chosen partners, one Jinn and one Angel they will be able to release her own powers and the all three can become an unstoppable force. It is what the Alliance needs if they are going to win in this war against good and evil.

In her rescue comes Nash, a Jinn who is alpha to the bone and one hell of a smart ass, sexy as hell and an ultimate Dom in the bedroom. One with the rep of never having sex with the same woman, a real love'em and leave'em type of guy. Something about Eve pulls at Nash, he knows in his soul that there is something about Eve that he must have, he must possess her and she will submit. One thing was for sure was that Eve was a kick ass sort of girl, well verbally. Now she did hold her own, after all this is a whole new world to her that only comes alive in storybooks! Angles, Jinn, you have got to be kidding. Besides the fact that Kronos has burrowed under her skin, something about the angel that she can't resist. He loving and gentle lovemaking, his heart. No matter how pissed she is at him for lying and hiding this world from her and practically pimping her out for tripling her attraction and lust for him matches that of her lust for Nash.

Not fans of each other Nash and Kronos bump heads, I honestly didn't know if they ever going to get to the tripling between the three of them with those two alpha barking at each other. Quite funny. Kronos is almost disgusted with the fact that Nash has Eve tied up and fears for her, but soon learns that when it comes to Nash, that is exactly what Eve needs. What she desires, like the gentle touch of Kronos, Eve needs both men to make her whole.

But as this isn't a normal triad Eve fears that the two men she has fallen for, who hold her heart are not her chosen partners. She will have to find others, or will she. A serious roller coaster ride of emotions, dramatic battles, not to mention a brilliant amount of love, betrayal and intrigue all come into play in book two. Many of the most colorful and deliciously sexy characters make an appearance. And what kept me going, besides the witty and mesmerizing dialog was the relationship between all three players in this triad, Eve, Kronos and Nash. Half the time I didn't know whether to laugh or cry sometimes doing both as Eve's wit and charm as well as her vulnerability was exposed at every turn. They are all so different, but together they fit to make one perfectly.

There is a traitor in their mist, but finding out one, that all their problems is really an inside job, two, who the heck is causing such havoc on The Alliance. Not to mention three, when they do find out all hell breaks loose, not to mention that they have captured of of the Bloodliners.

Like a master chef, Kris Cook has blended the perfect ingredients for a succulent masterpiece by creating a majestic world where the supernatural is interwoven with the human world, a powerfully emotional love story and a suspenseful and deliciously dramatic battle between good and evil. Primal, sexually explosive and downright additive CAPTIVATION is a can't miss as it leaves you breathless and aching for more!

MEET ME IN MANHATTAN by Judith Arnold

True love isn't always pretty, it isn't always fast, it can span over years before it is given a chance or even a second chance to survive. MEET ME IN MANHATTAN by Judith Arnold is just that story, the one of Ted and Erika. Two teenage lovers who's hearts were pure but who's lives were headed in different directions. While Ted was planning the rest of his life with Erika, Erika was thinking about college and life beyond.

Not that she didn't love Ted, she did with her every once of her being, but she was 18, and heading off to college, and a bit selfish and leaving Ted behind with a broken heart didn't cross her mind until too late.

Fifteen years later their lives are about to intersect and all those told feelings come to life again but honestly it completely and utterly confusing as hell to both of them. Thing is that Ted is and has been in a relationship, a committed and serious one for the last three years.

But what Ted finally accepts is that he is still desperately in love with Erika and she with him, but knowing he has a girlfriend Erika eases off even though it breaks her heart.

Their emotional struggle was so raw and real, Ted's feelings of insecurity that at any moment Erika could get up and leave him at any time puts him on guard. He isn't willing to give his heart 100% to her claiming she doesn't love him as much as he loves her. But all this time and running back into Ted has sparked something deep inside Erika. She knew she loved him but it was powerful when she ran into him again after all these years and it clicked. What she missed all this time away from him, perhaps it is what they needed to be able to rekindle the love they once shared.

A classic love story told only as Judith Arnold can tell it—with a deep grasp of the complexities of the human heart and unforgettable tales of love lost and then unexpectedly found again.

Ted Skala and Erika Fredell were the perfect New Jersey high school sweethearts. Like many teens Ted and Erika spent plenty of time in parked cars under the stars, but there was so much more between them than the chemistry that ignited their courtship, and Ted couldn’t imagine a life without Erika. By graduation he was ready to get engaged. Erika, however, was ready to spread her wings and faraway she flew to college. She broke his heart. She sailed the world.

Fast forward 15 years. When fate intervenes and their paths cross, the result is emotionally explosive and that old black magic is back with the force of a super nova. But Erika once ravaged his heart: How can Ted ever trust her again? And now that he’s seriously involved with another woman, how can Erika hope for a second chance with the man she never should have let go?

Guest Author and Giveaway with Kris Cook!

Today I would like to welcome author Kris Cook to Book Junkie! Kris is here celebrating his latest release September 7, 2010 from Siren-Bookstrand Eternally Three Book 2, CAPTIVATION!

Hi Book Junkie followers,

Glad to be part of the discussion today. I thought I’d give you my take on being a male author in a female dominated market.

IT’S WONDERFUL!

Sorry, for shouting.

Seriously, I’m so thrilled to be in such an embracing community. In my experience, there is nothing like romance readers to help make my day. Also, I’ve been so fortunate to become friends with some wonderful authors like Shayla Black, Melissa Schroeder, Nikki Duncan, Candace Havens, Sophie Oak, and so many more.

This past year has been such an amazing ride. PERFECTION, my first book, came out on Sept 7, 2009. THREE TO PLAY, a contemporary erotic novella, came out Nov 2009. Just last week, CAPTIVATION, the follow-up book of PERFECTION, was released. Coming in Dec is SECRET CRAVINGS, a paranormal erotic novella about wolf shifters. Jan 2011 – An Eternally Three Novella comes out titled – LILLIAN’S ROGUES.

Whew! It’s been a busy year, too.

The emails I get from readers about my books are such a treat. It makes the long hours at the writing desk worth it. I’d love to hear from you.

I thought I’d share a Story Excerpt (PG-13) with you. This is an Internet debut for the very first pages of chapter 1. We meet the heroine of CAPTIVATION: Eve. I really loved writing her. She’s got guts. Hope you enjoy!

EXCERPT:

Eve Rousseau ran fast, looking over her shoulder. Her heart punched her ribs like a boxer. Her lungs nearly sawed out of her chest.

No place to go. Nowhere safe.

Still, she ran. No way in hell was she simply going to give up and die.

A block back she spotted the three strangers in dark trenchcoats, all male, who had been tailing her for the past ten minutes. When they entered the lit area under a lamppost, the tallest nodded toward her and pointed. She’d been foolish to think that wearing a large overcoat and tucking her distinctive red hair into a cap would be camouflage enough to elude these creatures. Even from this distance, she swore the tall guy wore an evil grin. Then the trio sped up, their gaits becoming sprints.

She whirled forward and ran harder. Though they looked normal enough, she doubted they were.

Frantic for a policeman, a crowd, or an escape, Eve scanned the street but found it empty. Regretfully, this part of the city shut down much earlier than downtown, where, until three nights ago, she’d been staying for the past two months.

Eve longed for the room she shared with her roommate, Mava, but she’d left it back at the nightclub, Zone Three, in her rush to escape that arrogant prick David.

And Kronos.

Part of her wished Kro was by her side now. She’d been enjoying his company for the past couple of months. His humor and kindness always made her weak in the knees. At first, it had been fun and games. His sexual skills had taken her to heights of pleasure again and again, and with his gentleness and caring, he’d begun to peel away the fortress around her heart. And she’d been terrifyingly close to letting him.

With Kro beside her, she’d always felt safe, but he worked for David, just like the men following her. She didn’t want anything to do with David—the icy control freak—or his secrets. And knowing what she knew now, Eve would never feel safe with Kronos again.

The slap of the men’s boots on the pavement behind her spiked her adrenaline. They were getting closer.

Oh God!

Pushing her fatigue aside, Eve ran faster.

Ahead, an all-night diner’s sign burned like a promising light at the end of a long, dark tunnel: OPEN. She darted toward her only chance at safety.

When she ran through the diner’s glass door, the bell above jingled. Panting, she slammed the door and twisted the silver knob, locking it, a poor deterrent given what these guys were capable of, but her only available option. She killed the lights on the neon sign by pulling its chain and hoped like hell David’s thugs wouldn’t find her.

Shaking, she turned. The décor was a throwback to mid-century design. Red laminate tables and matching red vinyl chairs, all with chrome legs, filled the space. The jukebox in the far corner of the diner twanged with a country ballad. The place smelled of bacon and eggs, just like her childhood memories of Aunt Penny’s kitchen.

Feeling dark stares on her, Eve looked back through the glass to the street. The three men no longer ran but made a beeline toward her almost lazily, as if they knew they had her cornered. Cold settled deep under her skin.

“Well, don’t stand there by the door, hon. Sit anywhere you like,” a lyrical voice wafted her way.

Thank God she wasn’t alone.

Eve tossed a glance over her shoulder at the woman pouring coffee for the place’s only customers, an elderly couple. The plastic tag pinned to her uniform gave her name: Nancy.

Please, God, let there be a muscled cook with a gun in the back!

“Call the police!” Eve shouted.

The woman’s eyes widened, and the couple turned their gaze to her, their faces revealing concern.

Nancy tilted her head. “Honey, what’s wrong?”

“Everything. Please, call nine-one-one. Three very big men are chasing me. Call the police now!”

Eve moved away from the entrance and looked back through the glass. Her assailants now stood glaring in the middle of the street, like circling vultures ready for a dinner from a rotting carcass yet too cautious to swoop in for the meal. Had the men decided against pursuing since there would be witnesses?

Suddenly, a white utility van pulled up between the diner and the thugs, blocking them from her sight. On the side of the vehicle Grafton Cleaning Service, along with a phone number, was written in blood red letters. She felt hope rush in. More witnesses. Thank God.

She waited to see who might exit the van, but the passenger’s door remained closed. Squinting to see the driver, she detected dark hair. Nothing else. Whoever sat behind the wheel didn’t immediately leave the vehicle. Would the trio rip the driver to shreds once out of the van?

“Oh God! No!”

“Sweetie, I don’t see any men chasing you. Are you hurt?” Nancy asked. “Bump your head maybe?”

Instead of turning to the woman, Eve kept her gaze fixed on the danger just outside the glass door. They looked like ordinary guys, but she suspected they weren’t. “No! I swear, there are men following me who want to hurt me. They’re outside right now!”

Suddenly, the smell of sulfur filled her nose.

“Wrong, bloodliner.” The speaker’s voice came from behind her. Inside the diner.

“How the hell did you get in here?” Eve whirled and gasped, trying to swallow down a double dose of fear.

Somehow, the creatures who had been following her had gotten inside the diner, despite the fact she’d locked the door—and that they’d never come near it. She thought about running to the van, asking the driver to hit the gas and provide her escape, but before she could act a man’s hand clamped down on her shoulder.

Bringing her knee to the asshole’s groin, she lost her footing when he shoved her to the ground before she could connect. Her back hit the tiled floor with a thud. Sharp pain shot through her spine. Eve bit her lip to hold back the tears. The son-of-a-bitch wouldn’t see her cry.

She stared up at her assailant who was standing and glaring down at her. The creep was as tall as a giant and built like a jagged boulder, and his face looked like a block of cold granite. His nose spread across his mug like a mountain, and a wide purple scar trailed from his ear to his lips, but the strangest of all his features were his eyes: no irises or whites, only empty black. She turned to take in the other two shorter thugs and found the same dark, evil orbs.

About Me

My Photo
Brande
I am a working mom with an addiction to coffee, chocolate, and books.. I read an average 3 to 4 books a week to escape reality. I have setup this site to organize my own thoughts and help others when choosing what to read. Since I can be a dimwit at times I decided to keep a record of the books I read. This record turned into reviews so I would remember if I liked the book I forgot I had read. I am not particularily funny and my grammer sucks so please don’t expect much. Basically I don’t know jack about many things, but I do know what I like in a novel and what makes me want to spend my money on an author.
