Going Down by Shelli Stevens

Shelli Stevens has for some time been one of my few GO TO authors. I am feeling I need a little bit of naughty romance with just the perfect amount of spice, drama and deliciously erotic love scenes Shelli's my girl. And she never disappoints, at least as far as I am concerned. The other reason why I love her books, I get so engrossed that I usually finish the same day I start, her character's weed their way into your hearts and your every thought until the last page is consumed with them as though you were living their lives through words, their actions that you can't help but feel emotionally invested in the outcome.

Sooo, when I picked up GOING DOWN, Book one in her new Holding Out for a Hero series it was a no brainer!

The story of Ellie who is on the run to a small coastal town in Oregon, running for her life really and her own sanity. A beautiful woman who got mixed up with the wrong kind of man, someone who beat her, someone who threatened her, now she is running away from having to testify against him in this trail. He is a drug dealer she is a key witness, but after being threatened by him and one of his partner's, who just happens to be a dirty cop, she took off. Leaving her entire life behind for a couple of months while she is on the run herself.

Although Ellie is trying remain on the down low, she gets a visit from the Sheriff of Wyattville, a sexy man but a VERY persistent man. Ellie is scared to death and now the town Sheriff has got his eye on her she doesn't know whether to run fast in the opposite direction or into his arms. She is strong and knows the reality of her situation, but telling Tyson who she is and why she took off from Chicago could really get her killed. Not likely with Tyson, he is a good ole fashioned gentleman, hard working and honest to the bone, but liers he can't take and when he finds out that Ellie is lying to him, despite his passion and attraction for the woman he has gotten to know the past few days, he isn't sure he can trust her.

Ellie on the other hand is falling for Tyson, their desire for each other really lights the pages on fire, but knowing that she has to stand up in court and testify scares her to death. She doesn't want to lie to Tyson or anyone else, but what is a girl to do. He is a cop and from her experience they have all been dirty. Against her better judgement she lets Tyson in her heart and the rest is history. Also a nice treat is Shelli gives readers just enough of Todd and Trevor, the other two Wyat bros, just enough to tease the pallet and leave you wanting more of these two sexy bachelors! I can't wait to read their stories!

Holding Out for a Hero, Book 1
Eleanor Owen needs to get out of Chicago and quick. It’s not that she doesn’t want to obey the subpoena to testify against her drug-trafficking ex-boyfriend. It’s making it to the witness stand alive, should a dirty cop make good on his threats.
Tiny, remote Wyattsville, Oregon looks like the perfect place to disappear, but it’s hard to blend into the woodwork when one of the town’s infamous namesakes sends her heart racing. Worse, Mr. Tall, Hot and Packing is the town sheriff, which means she should stay as far away from him as possible.
Tyson Wyatt is positive the sexy new girl in town is hiding something. Question is, what? He vows to feel out her secrets—including what she feels like beneath him. Preferably naked. Until then, he’s not buying the story she’s selling.
Their chemistry is sheet-melting hot, and Ellie realizes much too late that the man with the badge is as dangerous to her heart as her ex is to her life…

Farm Fatale by Wendy Holden

As much as I liked Farm Fatale by Wendy Holden there were parts of the book that I had a hard time with. Rosie and her boyfriend mark are off to live a life in the country, Eight Mile Bottom is a small village and I think both of them are looking to this new start in different ways. Rosie is looking for that inner happiness that she has been longing for, thinking that being away from the drama and hassle of the city is just want her and Mark need. Mark on the other hand is convinced or rather tries to convince himself that his journalism career is going to take off by writing about country life in rural England.

The village is full interesting characters that I think help the story along, without all their antics and bizarre personalities the story might have fallen flat.

One stand out was the vivacious Samantha, her personality alone and charismatic dialog will make you laugh out loud. She is simply outrageous and addictive, but I wasn't quite sure her motives at times weren't purely selfish.

Through and through Farm Fatale has it's charm, but off and on throughout the chapters I felt that the story dragged along and went off in a few tangents that were unnecessary and hard for the reader to follow.

Rosie and Mark, a couple living in chic urban squalor, pine for the rustic bliss of country life. Newly minted, Samantha and Guy want the same thing-on a somewhat grander scale. The four converge on the quaint village of Eight Mile Bottom. With its eccentric residents, including a reclusive rock star, a nosy postman, a foxy farmer, and one ghost with a knife in its back, the two couples are soon swept up in various romantic entanglements, mix-ups, slipups, and unlikely seductions in their search for ever-greener pastures.

My Nora Encounter

It’s that time of year. Next week, the Romance Writers of America hold their annual national conference. Every year hundreds of writers, both established and newbies, attend RWA National to learn their craft, network with editors and agents, meet old and new friends, and listen to inspiring workshops and speeches.

Best of all, this conference allows all us ‘normal’ people to catch glimpses and maybe even exchange conversations with the super-stars of our industry. The big names all put in appearances – Sherrilyn Kenyon, Susan Elizabeth Philips, Jennifer Crusie, and of course, Nora Roberts. Being in close proximity to people held in such high esteem often results in some close encounters of the star-struck kind. One of my friends admits to having a verbal meltdown when she ran into her long-time idol Julie Garwood. Another said she suffered from acute shaky hands syndrome while attempting to help Nora with a potential wardrobe malfunction backstage at an awards ceremony. Such stories abound before, during, and after National.

I’ve been lucky enough to attend four National conferences in the past six years. I always have an enjoyable time, but I’ll never forget my very first National conference in 2005 because that is when I had my own personal Nora (Roberts) Encounter.

It was the Booksellers’ Awards Luncheon, and by the time my buddy Willena and I met up and made our way into the crowded ballroom, there were seemingly no tables with two seats remaining. I’d resigned myself to eating at two different places, but not Willena who marched right up to a table way in the back with a huge “Reserved” sign but only three people seated at it. She was already half into a seat and pulling me into the one next to her as she asked if it was all right for us to sit down (not a shy bone in her body, my buddy Willena)! Two other lost-looking newbies sat down too as soon as the lovely, petite lady nodded. But she added that we had to save one empty seat for her friend who was running late. Then she introduced herself as Cindy Hwang, editor at Berkley.

Good thing I was already sitting down when she introduced herself, not that having lunch with a well-known editor wasn’t heady enough. But I recognized the two other people sitting at the table across from me, although they politely introduced themselves anyway – Jayne Ann Krentz and Christine Feehan. Oh. My. Gosh! I was tongue-tied with awe as I introduced myself as Ms. Unpublished Nobody. The other two newbies were similarly afflicted. Even Willena was a bit ruffled.

We were rescued from the awkward silence by the waiters who placed our luncheon plates, dessert plates, and filled our drinks, including the empty spot for Ms. Hwang’s elusive friend. I don’t think I tasted a thing in my main course as Jayne Ann and Christine politely asked each of us what sub-genres we wrote. I was too nervous trying to form a coherent reply.

We started our dessert – my favorite, cheesecake – as the mistress of ceremony stepped upon the stage and approached the microphone. The seat next to Ms. Hwang was still glaringly empty. However, as the speaker began, the back door of the ballroom opened and in rushed none other than Nora Roberts!

I know I gasped audibly and I think Willena and the other two unpublished writers did the same, while Nora hurried over and sat down at our table. Then she did something for which I will adore her forever. She shoved aside her main course plate, pulled the cheesecake toward her and took a big bite. Yes, indeed, she was a woman after my own heart. She ate her dessert first!

She’d only managed to eat about half her portion when the speaker began talking about the next award and started describing the In Death series. Nora muttered an expletive under her breath, jumped up and ran for the stage. When she got to the microphone, I remember she made a witty remark about not needing to do the treadmill today. She never did make her way back to our table, but it didn’t matter. She’d already made four new fans.

After lunch, I went up to my room, called my critique partner and screeched in her ear, “You won’t believe who sat at our table at lunch!” When the conference was over, I returned home and started reading the In Death series, and every time I read a new one, I still remember my Nora encounter.

Have you had your own star-struck encounter? Please share it!

The Wild Irish Sea by Loucinda McGary

If I said that I loved this book that would be an understatement! The Wild Irish Sea by Loucinda McGary was fantastic and mesmiraizing! First, when you start the first few pages you are magically transformed into Kevin's small Irish cottage with him and Amber. Kevin is a recovering alcoholic and working through his own demons when Amber comes knocking, literally at his door in search for her brother.

Feisty and refreshing, Amber knows in her heart that something is wrong with her brother and now he is missing. Sending out a stress call to her, not on the phone but psychically. Their connection will bind them together for life. And now it seems that something has severed that connection.

Off to Ireland and into the life of the sexy Kevin, who much to his dismay, agrees to help the desparate American. Which of course, as we can all see the writing on the wall, they fall madley in love.

When push comes to shove the begining and the end of course were brillantly written, but it is the middle that counts. All the juicy tidbits of their romance and mini adventure in the search of Amber's brother, the Irish legends of seals and their power you can't help but be transported to Ireland, the world of Amber and Kevin and with a blend of paranormal myth and mystisism.

A desperate call from her twin brother awakens Amber O'Neill from a sound sleep and propels her to Ireland's wild coast - and straight into the arms of local inspector Kevin Hennessy.

Reclusive Kevin is hiding from his past and his personal demons. He agrees to help Amber search for her missing brother even though he's a little unnerved by her ability to read his mind. But as the mystery unravels and survival becomes their prime objective, it will take all their efforts to keep themselves, and everyone around them, alive

Giveaway & Review: Waking the Witch by Kelley Armstrong

Waking the Witch by Kelley Armstrong is a really spellbinding read, transporting the reader into the world of sharp-tongued Savannah who is really just coming into her own with her supernatural powers.

The girl is full of sass and attitude that just won't quick, plus she kicks a little ass so that never hurts. Working with human isn't up her ally, but that is just what she has to do if she wants to work on her case for the agency. On her own this time and not able to use her magic at her every whim really sets her on edge, but throughout the book you watch Savannah grow and make more mature decisions about her craft and abilities.

This case will be a true trial for her and she really has to pull it together to make it through all the hurdles.
Kelley Armstrong really pulls out the punches with some fantastic plot twists that will suck you into the supernatural realm of the Otherworld only finishing and leaving you craving for more.

The orphaned daughter of a sorcerer and a half-demon, Savannah is a terrifyingly powerful young witch who has never been able to resist the chance to throw her magical weight around. But at 21 she knows she needs to grow up and prove to her guardians, Paige and Lucas, that she can be a responsible member of their supernatural detective agency. So she jumps at the chance to fly solo, investigating the mysterious deaths of three young women in a nearby factory town as a favour to one of the agency’s associates. At first glance, the murders look garden-variety human, but on closer inspection signs point to otherworldly stakes.

Soon Savannah is in over her head. She’s run off the road and nearly killed, haunted by a mystery stalker, and freaked out when the brother of one of the dead women is murdered when he tries to investigate the crime. To complicate things, something weird is happening to her powers. Pitted against shamans, demons, a voodoo-inflected cult and garden-variety goons, Savannah has to fight to ensure her first case isn’t her last. And she also has to ask for help, perhaps the hardest lesson she’s ever had to learn.

Think of a Number by John Verdon

THINK OF A NUMBER by John Verdon is the debut novel which has been published with Random House Publishing and released July 2010.

A wonderfully written suspenseful thriller that revolves around retired homicide detective Dave Gurney and a serial killer.
Dave has been retired for not quite a year, but for the always busy and engrossed detective life in upstate NY isn't all what it seems. Bored to tears and looking for something to fill his days he develops a new hobby, actually it was a little disturbing if you ask me. He is re-creating pictures of the serial killers he once caught during his career. It was a little creepy, but then again I had to put myself in this man's shoes, it was all he knew for years, chasing down these killers, they became his life. Which of course this hobby is non to pleasing to his wife, who thought by him retiring and moving out of NYC that they would have a second chance on life and their marriage. Apparently not.

Not only that but poor Dave get himself entangled in the mystery of a new serial killer at large. It starts when he is contacted by an old acquaintance who is receiving mysterious and quite disturbing letters from someone who claims to know him rather well. Enough that the poems and letters that he is now receiving are quite hostile and so disturbing he is at a loss.

The story really starts for me there and doesn't really let you go until the end. Although I have to say there are a few chapters here and there that were a little fluff to keep the story going I felt that all in all I couldn't stop turning the pages, I had to know what was going to happen next. Dave seemed so human  to me, faults and all and that is part of what made him so real. With so many twists and turns within the plot line this is one roller coaster ride of a thriller that you aren't going to want to put down!!!!

Arriving in the mail one day is a taunting letter that ends with a simple declaration “See how well I know your secrets-just think of a number.” Eerily, those who comply find that the letter writer has predicted their random choice exactly.
For Dave Gurney, just retired as the NYPD’s top homicide investigator and forging a new life with his wife, Madeleine, in upstate New York, the letters are oddities that begin as a diverting puzzle but quickly ignite a massive serial-murder investigation.
Brought in as an investigative “consultant,” Gurney soon accomplishes deductive breakthroughs that have local police in awe. Yet, with each taunting move by his seemingly clairvoyant opponent, Gurney feels his tragedy-marred past rising up to haunt him, his marriage approaching a dangerous precipice, and, finally, a dark, cold fear building that he’s met an adversary who can’t be stopped.

Starting on 7/12 and running through 7/25, THINK OF A NUMBER is being offered as an e-book for the special price of $5.99! Roseflower Creek by Jackie Lee Miles

I was thrown into the world of Lori Jean with just the first few haunting words of Roseflower Creek by Jackie Lee Miles. This is the story of Lori Jean and her short life, only in this world for 10 short years the reader is immerse into her sad life of poverty and abuse. Stock with a depressed mother and an alcololic stepfather this sad little girl will grip your heart and not let go. Murdered in a drunken rage by her stepfather who happens to be an abusive and raging alcoholic it was so disturbing and downright sad that it brought tears to my eyes.

Truly mesmerizing and raw are J.L. Miles words through the eyes of this precious little girl who witnesses the utter sadness of her mother on a daily bases. It is amazing how perceptive children are and how much our attitude and personalities affect them internally.

Lori Jean is an old soul, a beautiful soul of a child who's life of poverty and emotional neglect are so poignant and in so many cases across this country frighteningly true.

I couldn't stop thinking about this book when I was finished, it truly broke my heart because you know the things that happened to this little girl happen all the time sadly.

The author did a brilliant job of bringing Lori Jean to life, I felt as though she was talking to me and telling me her story, it felt so heartfelt and personal. A horrible tragedy comes to life, but you almost feel blessed to know Lori Jean, she is just that special.

"The morning I died it rained. Poured down so hard it washed the blood off my face."
Thus begins the story of ten-year-old Lori Jean, whose short life and early death are woven into this affecting novel set in the 1950s rural South. Abandoned by her father when she was just five years old, Lori Jean's world consists of a weak-willed mother and an alcoholic stepfather who can't keep a steady job. Yet Lori Jean is filled with the curiosity and hope common to all children.
When Lori Jean uncovers her stepfather's secret, everything spins out of control and she pays the ultimate price for what she knows.
But through this heart-wrenching story comes surprising tribute to the human heart's ability to heal and love— despite the most difficult circumstances.

30 (ARC) Book Charity Giveaway!!!!!

I have decided that instead of a regular contest I am going to have a Charity Auction for my son's cause. Every September we join in the Boston PKD walk. This is to help fight PKD and help raise money to find a cure for the disease. PKD is Polycystic Kidney Disease. My son has ARPKD (Autosomal recessive, is a relatively rare genetic disorder), which means that my husband and I (unbeknownst to use at the time), both happen to carry the gene. The odds are rare that we would marry and have children, but knowing what we do know with the complications of his birth and treatment since we have had the opportunity to learn about a disease we had no idea even existed.

There is currently NO treatment and NO cure for PKD, but there are more researchers, clinical trials and people pulling together to fight this disease than ever before. There is hope – hope for a treatment, hope for a cure, hope for a long and happy life despite PKD.

You can read a little about the disease here. Learn more about ARPKD.

Author Interview and Giveaway Amanda Scott

Today I welcome to Book Junkie author Amanda Scott. She is celebrating her release TEMPTED BY A WARRIOR! So please give her a warm welcome, enjoy the interview and don't forget to enter the contest!!

If someone were writing a story about Amanda Scott, what would your blurb say?
Read this amazing tale of how an imaginative child model and would-be rodeo trick-rider grew up to be the author of 54 Romance novels, mostly Historicals.

Can you tell us a little about your newest release TEMPTED BY A WARRIOR ?
TEMPTED BY A WARRIOR is a Scottish historical, set in the late fourteenth-century Scottish Borders (actually in Dumfries and Galloway, the southwestern corner of Scotland). The sequel to TAMED BY A LAIRD and SEDUCED BY A ROGUE, TEMPTED BY A WARRIOR is the story of Lady Fiona Dunwythie, the younger sister of Lady Mairi Dunwythie, the heroine of SEDUCED BY A ROGUE. All three books are based on an unpublished sixteenth century manuscript about fourteenth-century Scottish events. Although the manuscript tells us in great detail how Mairi met and married her husband, it tells us only the barest fact of how Fiona met and married hers. So at the beginning of TEMPTED BY A WARRIOR, Fiona’s husband is missing, and his dying father believes that he is dead. In fact, his father believes that Fiona killed his son, and Fiona is not sure that he is wrong about that. Will was a womanizing brute.

When naming your characters, do you give any thought to the actual meaning?
If you mean to the actual meaning of the name, yes, I do, although certainly not always. In fact, however, at times I have taken it to extremes, i.e. naming a French spy d’Espion, which means ‘spy.’ I like to amuse myself, you see, so in another case, when I had a repeating character in my Bath Regency trilogy named Sidney St. Denis, I neglected to tell the reader that the English pronounce St. Denis “Sidney,” so the correct pronunciation of his name was Sidney Sidney. I told my Regency editor about that a number of years later, thinking that she would also find it amusing. Her response: “I’m sorry, but we can’t change that at this late date.” Ah, well. Names of characters do mean a lot to me, but then so do the traits I give them. If the characters are real historical people, of course, I stay true to their real names, but I try to determine, if possible, what sun sign they might have been born with. For example, in the book I’m writing now, James I of Scotland is a seven-year-old child. We know that he was born on or about August 1, which would make him a Leo, and much of his history indicates that he did have many Leo characteristics. So, when I was determining how he would behave under the circumstances of the plot, I used that information to guide me in showing his temperament and his thinking.

If you could trade places with one of your characters, would you want to?
Nope. I spend my summers in a rustic cabin in the High Sierras, with no road, no sewer, no telephone, and no Internet. That’s enough historical living for me. I like libraries, iced mochas, and driving fast cars. Living in a drafty, smoky castle might be fun for a sennight or so, and I love good haggis, but after that…nae, thanks!

What was the first romance book you read and how did it affect you?
I couldn’t possibly tell you what the first one was, but the first one I can readily identify was Border Lord by Jan Westcott. I already loved Scotland and all things Scottish, because my heritage on both sides is Scottish, but I loved her version of Lord Bothwell. To discover years later that he had been the stepfather of the sixteenth-century Sir Walter Scott of Buccleuch, ancestor of the poet and a collateral ancestor of my own, I was both astonished and delighted. Buccleuch inherited all of the exiled Bothwell’s estates and as a result became the most powerful Border lord of his time.

Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to get published?
Nope. Every book I’ve written has been published.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve done in the name of research?
Traveling. I’ve done a lot of it, but the most amazing trip was when I went to Yorkshire and to Wales while I was writing The Rose at Twilight about Richard III, Henry VII, and the murders of the Princes in the Tower. I visited all the requisite castles in Yorkshire, guided by Richard III enthusiasts and stayed with a delightful woman in Brecon, Wales, who arranged for me to meet the headmaster of the boys’ school there, which had existed since the fifteenth century, as the Blackfriar’s school. I went through Buckingham House in Brecon, which was the residence then of the Duke of Buckingham, and my hostess conned an archeologist into taking me out on the Roman roads to see how my characters would have traveled and a history teacher to drive me to the church in mid Wales where an ancestor of mine was baptized. The very font is still standing there in that church. My hostess had organized the whole town of Brecon and they had decided how my hero would have been schooled, where he would have lived, how he got to where he was at the beginning of the book. Everyone from Gwyn the Books (bookstore owner), to the headmaster, to a lady named Daintrie (the inspiration for the heroine of my book DANGEROUS ILLUSIONS) had a hand in that book. And, when I needed an epithet for my hero to snap at the heroine, she got one for me from, of all people, the Bishop of the Cathedral in Brecon!

What are you currently working on?
Currently, I’m working on The Scottish Knights Trilogy: HIGHLAND MASTER, HIGHLAND HERO, and HIGHLAND LOVER. These stories will take place in early fifteenth-century Scotland at a time when the duke who was third in line for the Scottish throne was determined to rule Scotland, the heir to the throne was a reckless, womanizing profligate, and the second in line was a seven-year-old boy. Three close friends, all knights who studied together under the Bishop of St. Andrews, will do all they can to aid the rightful heir in his battle against the murderous efforts of his wicked uncle to seize Scotland’s throne. The first book, HIGHLAND HERO, will be out in February 2011. It is the story of Sir Finlagh Cameron, the sole surviving Cameron from the Great Battle of Perth, and Lady Catriona Mackintosh, daughter of the war-leader of the opposing faction in that battle, Clan Chattan. Think Romeo and Juliet with a murderous Romeo who has sworn a sacred oath to kill Juliet’s father.

If you could ask readers any one question, what would it be?
What is it that you are always looking for in a Scottish Historical but have either not yet found or have not yet seen treated the way you’d like to see it treated?

I am always interested in learning readers’ pet peeves and their thoughts on what they would like to read but have not yet found. So, if anyone has suggestions, please just fire away. Some of my best information has come from readers. In one case, a rare one, a reader in England wrote to inform me that meadow larks are American birds, that English larks are simply larks. I was delighted to have the information; however, I was even more delighted by the fact that she continued in her letter to tell me about her recent trip from the northeast coast of England into Wales, listing every bird and flower that she had noted on the way, complete with exact location. She thought that I might find such information useful, and to say that I have is a tremendous understatement. I do use various sources for such information; but I have found no source as fascinating as that one, because she interspersed every bit of her information with her own reactions and she had a marvelous sense of humor.

How can the readers find out about you on-line?
Go to http://www.amandascottauthor.com/ You can also email me from there, anytime, by using the email link.

Author Interview and Giveaway with Kaily Hart

Today I am thrilled to have author Kaily Hart who is celebrating the release of her debut work Picture This with aVirtual Book Tour! Picture This is a short rotic romance that released from Ellora's Cave June 29. So please give Kaily a warm welcome and enjoy the interview, but don't forget to enter the giveaway!!!!!!

If someone were writing a story about Kaily Hart, what would your blurb say?

Oh no, you’re asking me to write a blurb!? LOL I used to think I liked writing blurbs. I was deluding myself. It’s incredibly difficult to boil down the critical elements of a story to give a sense of it. OK ::deep breath:: here goes:
Kaily Hart, a seemingly straight-laced mother of four left corporate America and a high-powered, lucrative career to be a stay at home mom. Ha! That lasted about four weeks, during which time she realized she had a deeply repressed dream—to write. Romance! By day, Kaily plays conservative wife and soccer mom, but at night crafts hot and steamy tales of romance and love with gorgeous heroes who wouldn’t dream of leaving the toilet set up. Ever. She’s smart and sassy, at least in her own mind, and is trying her best to bring the alpha male solidly back to contemporary romance. Two years ago she never would have thought she’d be doing this, but now that she is? It just feels so right.

Can you tell us a little about your debut release Picture This from Ellora's Cave that isn’t in the blurb?
Picture This was the story that surprised me. I’d had other plans the day the idea came to me for it! For me, the book is about how a single action, a blip on the radar of life, can came back at you some time down the line and have a dramatic effect. How many decisions do we make every day? How many actions do we take? Some are bigger than others, but do we ever stop to think that any one of them (regardless of how small) could one day have a substantial impact on our lives in the future, even if it’s indirectly? The book is also about the emotional evolution of the alpha male. I love to write heroes who are crude, rude and ‘rough around the edges’, but will melt and give up everything they always thought they wanted for the right woman. Probably why I write romance, huh?

Where did the inspiration come from to write Picture This ?
It’s funny. Inspiration comes in many forms and at the oddest times for me. Often I’ll be hard at work on one thing and just like that, an idea will form for something completely different. I have a lot of ideas come to me while I’m driving and numerous times I’ve pulled over and hunted for a receipt in my bag to jot it down. I’ve now resorted to carrying a notebook with me wherever I go! I got the idea for Picture This when I was actually reviewing the calls for submission section on the epublishers web site. I’ve done this regularly for awhile, just so that I keep updated on what they’re asking for. As I read it, the premise for Picture This solidified in my mind. As to where the specific idea came from? I have absolutely no idea!

What was your favorite scene to write in Picture This ?
I had to scan through the book and take another look because I really love all of it. I guess my favorite though is the first scene. It’s in the heroes Point of View (POV) and I love to write the male POV. I love to drop the reader right into the middle of something at the opening of a book. I’m not big on back story or reams of descriptions. I’m more action based and there’s some interesting action going on in that first scene ;). It’s also a chance for the reader to get to know the hero before the main character (heroine) steps into things!

If you could trade places with one of your characters, would you want to?
Nope. I’m completely happy with the chaos that’s my life at the moment. I always enjoyed my previous career, but now I’m doing something that I love and I wouldn’t trade that for anything.

What was the first romance book you read and how did it effect you?
You know, I can’t remember specifically the first romance book I ever read. You could probably argue some of the literary fiction you study at school has elements of romance and could probably qualify. I do recall visiting my grandmother in my early teens and finding a magazine she was reading. It had a short story in it, which I read because, well, when you visit your grandparents and you’re a teenager…let’s just say I was looking for something to do! I remember thinking I liked the fact that it had a happy ending. Guess, I was probably hooked on happy endings after that.

What is the most interesting thing you’ve done in the name of research?
this is a PG rated site, right? I’ll probably have to leave that one to the imagination!

What do you consider as the most frustrating side of becoming a published author and what has been the most rewarding?
The rewarding part is easy—reader feedback. So many people who’ve read Picture This have taken the time to reach out to me to say they loved it. It’s something I’ll always cherish. That makes all the hard work more than worth it and it’s why I write—to touch someone and give them enjoyment, even if it’s only for a short period of time.

As for the frustrating part, it’s hard to pick just one! I guess the thing that stands out is the waiting. Waiting on your submission, waiting when you’ve handed in revisions or edits, waiting for your cover, waiting for a release day, waiting for reviews and feedback. A writers life is spent primarily waiting! Of course, luckily there are other stories we can work on while we wait.

What are you currently working on?
I’m wrapping up two more contemporary novellas, a full length novel and I’ve outlined a couple of paranormal series I’d love to sink my teeth into (and that’s not meant to be a pun, they’re not about vampires!).

Please share with us something that readers would be surprised to learn about you
Well, not many people would know I’m originally from Australia. I grew up at the edge of the Australian outback in a very small rural town. At any point during this time I would have complained about the heat, the flies, the remoteness, the lack of excitement, the fact that everyone knows everyone’s business and the whole disadvantage of it! Now? After living and working in places like New York City and Los Angeles and having had the opportunity to travel and broaden my horizons? Well, I’m just grateful for such a humble and simple beginning. It gives me such an appreciative outlook on life.

How can the readers stay in touch with you online?
Actually, my blog turns 1 this month. Yay! I always thought it important to establish some form of online platform prior to publication and I keep that very current. You’ll always be able to figure out what I’m doing from that. I’ve also recently added a web site and I’m on Facebook (which I love) and Twitter (which I’m still getting used to). I love the different characteristics that each of these social networks provide and the ability to reach such a broad base of people with ease!

If you could ask readers any one question, what would it be?
You know what I’d really love to know? What do readers think makes a sexy hero? Personally, I spend a LOT of time thinking about this one so inquiring minds are very interested!

Thank you so much for having me here today!! The questions were interesting, thought provoking and a lot of fun!

Desperate and young, Jillian Moore did something she knew would one day come back to bite her in the ass. She’d posed nude. For money. Years later, and on the fast track to a successful career, she’s still haunted by her mistake. She can’t help but wonder when her past will catch up with her.
Samuel Steele is not short on female attention, but the women who warm his bed pale in comparison to the fantasy he’s created of the seductive temptress in the painting hanging prominently in his bedroom. A fantasy that has ruined his once satisfying sex life. When he discovers that her exact likeness works in his building—for him—things get…interesting.

EXCERPT:

Oh my God, Samuel Steele was a walking, talking wet dream.

She’d drooled from afar plenty, but up close he was downright gorgeous. Every woman in the place, and even some of the guys, had checked out his tight butt, flat abs and broad shoulders, and although he’d never worn anything but a suit to the office, that didn’t stop imaginations from running riot. His hair was dark and thick, his skin tanned, and regardless of the time of day, his jaw always seemed darkened with at least a day’s beard growth. And his eyes. She’d never been close enough to make out their color before, but they were a dark, piercing gray. They should have looked cold, but the way he was looking at her made her wonder if someone had turned off the air-conditioning.

Boys Lie: How Not To Get Played by Belisa Vranich and Holly Eagleson

In BOYS LIE by Belisa Vranich and Holly Eagleson was a pretty interesting and enlightening read for me.

For starters I think this is a great book for pre-teens and teen girls, almost a little guidebook. A little advice never hurt, and if it plants a seed in any of the young girls that read this book than that is all you can ask for. Basically the authors talk about a huge range of things from sex to contraceptives to drugs and alcohol, giving them a heads-up if you will on all the lingo and verbage BS that young boys are capable of spewing just to get what they want.

So let me say that as I agree that they did hit the nail on the head with some boys not all are like that, I knew many that weren’t. But that is not to say that I didn’t know more than a few that most definitely were. So based on that, I agree this would have been insightful when I was a teen to know what things to look for, almost warning signs. As I know I was a silly girl once who believed a few of the things that came out of the mouth of a young handsome boy or two.

Also what I thought was wonderful was the area that the authors touched on recognizing the signs of emotional and verbal abuse. Knowing a few of my girlfriend and even myself in a less than healthy relationship there is a pattern that develops with some women. And it saddens me to think that young girls could possibly believe that these behaviors are ok or even their fault. So if anything, I feel that if you have a young teen this would be a fabulous read, plus with the Q&A at the end of the chapters it will really give them a wonderful perspective of the fairer sex and possible save them from making a decision they will possible regret.

Everyone else is doing it. It’s lies like this one that often get young women, particularly ages 10 to 20, to put aside their own nagging thoughts about what is right—and wrong—and make choices they might regret long-term. Boys Lie is a collection of the most common untruths proliferated by boys and an assessment of the exaggerations and misinformation behind them.

Written by an expert with years of clinical experience with thousands of teens, Boys Lie is the first sexual and social health book of its kind. Based on a large national survey, this timely guide sets the record straight on what guys lie about, arming girls with straightforward advice that is understandable, concise, and totally relatable. And while the title may seem anti-boy, it’s more like pro-girl, helping to foster healthier relationships between the sexes.

Boys Lie unearths:
The top lies boys tell including ‘I won’t show anyone these pictures’ and ‘I won’t tell anyone’
How technology such as texting and social networking are changing the game, making girls more vulnerable to their male peers and the public at large
Case studies, true stories, and quizzes that shed light on pertinent issues in a teen-friendly way.
How to cultivate a healthy skepticism in young girls that will empower them to say ‘no’

Review & Giveaway: DAMAGED by Pamela Callow

DAMAGED is the wickedly brilliant debut from author Pamela Callow and book 1 in the Kate Lang series from Mira.

Kate Lang is an up and coming attorney just trying to make a name for herself and set her career in the right path and lands a killer job. Well, almost. She isn't practicing the type of law she wants because those around her think she is sleeping her way to the top and her mentor continues to feed her a bunch is lies.
Her boss Randall has no respect for her and couldn't care less about the newest addition to the law firm. All this and I still think Kate has a good head on her shoulders and help that head up high and with class.

But when she gives advice she believed in to a grandmother who was her client about her granddaughter to only find that the grand-daughter ends up dead to guts her. Almost to the core and the guilt of what ifs is eating her up.

Down but not out Kate is a seriously touch cookie, she has sass and definitely shows that she has character with all that she has had to deal with so far!

That is until life starts to throw her more curve balls, her jerk of a boss has given her a case she had been dying to get. Too bad it's could cost her dearly, perhaps with her life.

Talk about being on the edge of your seat, this book was full of suspense and intrigue that never died. I was completely riveted to Kate's drama and felt compassion for her along the way, completely immersing myself in her life and all that was happening around her. Absolutely fantastic!!!!

How far are you willing to go to forget your past?
Haunted by the death of her sister, and wounded by her ex-fiance's accusations, Kate Lange throws herself into her new career at a high-powered law firm.
When the grandmother of a lonely private school student seeks her counsel, Kate thinks it's just another custody case. Until the teen is brutally murdered. And it isn't only Kate who wonders if her legal advice led to the girl's death.
How far are you willing to go to redeem yourself?
Put on notice by Randall Barrett, the firm's charismatic managing partner, Kate must fight for her career, for her reputation -- and for redemption.
Unwilling to live with the damage she has caused, Kate pursues the case on her own and unearths some chilling facts.
Facts that lead straight to the heart of a legal conspiracy.
Facts that lead Kate directly into the surgically-skilled hands of the Body Butcher.

About Me

My Photo
Brande
I am a working mom with an addiction to coffee, chocolate, and books.. I read an average 3 to 4 books a week to escape reality. I have setup this site to organize my own thoughts and help others when choosing what to read. Since I can be a dimwit at times I decided to keep a record of the books I read. This record turned into reviews so I would remember if I liked the book I forgot I had read. I am not particularily funny and my grammer sucks so please don’t expect much. Basically I don’t know jack about many things, but I do know what I like in a novel and what makes me want to spend my money on an author.
