So Please give Rowena a very warm welcome and I hope you enjoy her guest post today. Also, she has been kind enough to give away I signed copy of THE KING'S BASTARD, don't forget to enter!!!
Remember when …
Remember when school holidays went on forever? On the last day of term you’d pack up your books with nothing but holiday ahead of you. In those days two weeks stretched off into infinity.
Remember when birthday presents contained unimaginable promise? It didn’t matter what was in them … it was what might be in them!
Remember when you first discovered science fiction and fantasy, and the stories swept you away to worlds of wonder? When every new concept felt like a new jumper that you had to stretch and wriggled your mind to try out? When the characters and events of a fantasy world lingered in your thoughts and you found yourself revisiting them days afterwards?
Remember when you used to buy a book and couldn’t wait to race home and read it, because you just knew it was going to sweep you away from the everyday into a world where everything was brighter (and darker) than our world?
Well, I miss those days so I set out to write the kind of book that sweeps you away. I make no apologies, King Rolen’s Kin is traditional fantasy. I wanted to write the kind of book that, after a hard week at work, you reward yourself with on Saturday afternoon.
I grew up loving speculative fiction, even before I knew there was such a thing as genre. When the Disney TV show started on a Sunday evening at 6pm and the theme music came up and Tinkerbell would introduce the four worlds that the night’s show could come from. (For nostalgia buffs here is the link to the old Disney intro. In Australia we didn’t have the US adverts). There was:
Frontier Land – Oh please, not another Western. They weren’t relevant to an Australian child.
Tomorrow Land – Yay! I loved to anticipate what things would be like in the future.
Adventure Land – This was usually about animals in the wild and very worthy. Sigh.
Fantasy Land – Yay! My other favourite. No limitations, anywhere, anywhen and magic!
So I was a fan of fantasy and SF before I knew it. And really, who wouldn’t be?
It’s not that I can’t take real life. (I teach and I have six children, believe me - it doesn’t get much realer than that). I just like to lift my head above the washing and the TV news to look past the everyday to something more.
And I look for that in the books I read. I want to be swept away. One reader said to me, Your books should come with a warning. Don’t start reading late at night, if you have to get up early for work the next day.
That made me smile. My book worked for her. Maybe it will work for you. At least it worked for me. While writing, I’m swept away. That’s why I started writing, because I couldn’t find the kind of books I wanted to read. (At least, not enough of them).

I do enjoy the Disney cartoons on tele. I have eleven children, so I've been watching them for a long time...hehe.

I definitely loved all things fantasy by Disney. Their shows and films were some of the most enjoyed things of my childhood. I still have some VHS tapes of their's from the 80s. Their older stuff has endured and I'll always love them. Like you, Disney made me a fan of fantasy before I was even aware that it was a genre.
August 6, 2010 12:57 PMI have never been to disney anything. I always wanted to as a kid but my mom never had the money and now that I have kids I have always wanted to take them but again not enough money. They say money can't buy you happiness but they failed to mention it could buy you time in the happiest place on earth lol

Oh, I think I loved them all. Tomorrow Land was exciting because of so much unknown and that goes for Fantasy Land too! I'm also partial to animals so I did like Adventure Land too. Twilight Zone was my other favorite since it had a little bit of everything strange!

I grew up watching disney on sunday nights. It was like the whole world stopped the minute the music started. When I had my son, he watched all the movies so many times. I was never able to take him to any of the disney parks when he was younger.

August 6, 2010 9:10 PMWhat a walk down memory lane. Loved the video intro. Adventure Land was my favorite, followed by Fantasy Land, Frontier Land, and Tomorrow Land. I can remember getting books and reading until way to late. Mysteries were the first, then I started reading mostly history and science. Liked books taking place in the West or colonial times as well as Knights in shining armor. Then I read A WRINKLE IN TIME and started fantasy and sci-fi. Now I read just about everything and enjoy it. I still don't have enough sense to put the book down and go to bed at a reasonable time : )

Valerie,
August 8, 2010 4:23 PMI have 6 children all born 2 years apart. Now that they are big I miss walking down the toy isle with them and going to the kiddy movies!
Jacqueline C,
August 8, 2010 4:25 PMI used to have a huge collection of tapes we'd made of the Disney movies and the kids watched them until they wore out.
I teach script and storyboard and I used examples of the early Disney to show economy of story telling.
Jennifer,
August 8, 2010 4:26 PMThe Disney I watched as a child was on TV.
And then we taped the Disney shows that came on TV for our kids. With 6 children we could only afford to take them to movies once a year.
Benita,
August 8, 2010 4:30 PMI live in Brisbane, in South East Queensland, Australia. We don't have a Disney World. But I'm only 45 minutes from the big theme parks on the Gold Coast.
There's Movie World, Wet and Wild (a water park) and Dreamworld. Of course they are all too expensive to take 6 kids, but now and then the school will take a class to one of these parks for end of year break up party. Then the kids get to go. I think all of mine have been to one park once.
Sandy Jay,
August 8, 2010 4:30 PMI think people were telling 'fantasy' stories around the camp fires in caves. LOL
Books and Bane,
August 8, 2010 4:32 PMDon't you love the Retro Futures from the 50s and 60s?
Good old George Jetson. Where's my TV phone? Oh, I have one. How about my flying car then?
Catslady,
August 8, 2010 4:33 PMI loved Twilight ZOne. I often reference something weird by doing the music!
Maureen,
August 8, 2010 4:34 PMI think the things we see as kids create a shared world experience. For instance I could say Brady Bunch to someone of a certain age and they would get all the references.
Tore, I'm sure your son will enjoy Disney World.
August 8, 2010 4:35 PMAlthough, wait until he's old enough to remember it, or he'll be pestering you to take him again!
K-sunshine 77,
August 8, 2010 4:36 PMI wasn't sure when I was putting the post together, if everyone saw the same Disney as we did in Australia.
Sweet Vernal Zephyr,
August 8, 2010 4:37 PMHow long did it take you to come up with such an evocative name?
Dor,
August 8, 2010 4:40 PMMy kids have watched so many shows and movies, they can do whole scenes from them. Anything can trigger it.
We were at the doctor's one day and I had to leave all 6 of them (aged 2- 12) in the room while I dashed out for a moment. I came back to find the doctor in stitches because someone had said something to trigger a show cue and they'd gone into a whole comedy routine.
Mervi,
August 8, 2010 4:41 PMThey used to show Disney World on the Disney show sometimes and my brothers and I would ask to go. And my parents would tell us it was on the other side of the world. (For which I'm sure they were very grateful).
Debbie,
August 8, 2010 4:43 PMI think it is important that we watch the shows with our kids. Like you, I'd watch the Disney movies with mine. That way you share their world and help explain things.
Carol, another fantasy fan!
August 8, 2010 4:43 PMGiada,
August 8, 2010 4:45 PMSince joining the blogging community I've 'met' people in Romania, Sweden, South Africa and Japan (as well as the usual US and UK).
It is amazing how much we have in common.
Estella,
August 8, 2010 4:46 PMMy mother made my brother a Davy Crockett costume, complete with faux raccoon hat. I still have it!
Patsy,
August 8, 2010 4:47 PMMy mother took me and my brother on a rare movie trip when we were five and four to see a Disney nature film. The man got separated from his dog and we were sobbing so loudly she had to leave the theatre with us!
Karen,
August 8, 2010 4:49 PMWhen you described Adventure land like that:
Ghosts, Pirates and the Wild West
It made me realise Adventure Land is just as much a fantasy as Fantasy Land!
Stacey,
August 8, 2010 4:50 PMMy daughter is spooked by clowns. I think it is similar to your fear of dolls.
Kaya,
August 8, 2010 4:52 PMI think Disney defined the child hoods of a lot of people.
Mary,
August 8, 2010 4:53 PMIs Space Mountain at Disney World?
booklover 0226,
August 8, 2010 4:54 PMI was delighted when the publisher told me they were releasing the books a month apart. I hate waiting for the rest of a series.
Library pat,
August 8, 2010 4:56 PMIf you can't put a book down once you start, don't start mine at night when you have to get up for work in the morning.
I had one reader tell me the book should come with a warning to that effect!
Ashley,
August 8, 2010 4:57 PMKaren has made me realise Adventure Land is really Fantasy Land in disguise!
Bethie,
August 8, 2010 4:58 PMI wonder if it is possible to find some of those old Tomorrow Land shows just to smile at the things they thought we'd be doing now!
Cheryl F,
August 8, 2010 4:59 PMMy daughter's favourite thing is Ladybugs. She even has Ladybug ear rings.
Carol,
August 8, 2010 5:00 PMI didn't find the magazines. The closest we had to anything like that was my cousin's comic collection.
And my parents frowned on comics so I would go over to his place, hide in his bedroom and read his comics.
Robin K,
August 8, 2010 5:01 PMThe tower of terror? Rather you and than me!

Hi Rowena,
August 9, 2010 8:59 AMOh, I can't wait to read The King's Bastard. And my favorite was Fantasy Land. When you mentioned Disney coming on a 6 pm and Tinker Belle, it brought me back to my youth a long time ago. :)
Carol L.

Oh my but the memories I have of watching Walt Disney and Tinker Belle. I loved Fantasy Land the most and would wish I could be there. I am still a kid at heart and love to watch Disney movies and even have a few at home I watch.
August 9, 2010 6:00 PMThe King's Bastard sounds like the beginning of a great series. I can't wait to read the first and then having the other two released so close that I can read all 3 without waiting a yr. Thanks for stopping by to chat about your books.
