Review & Giveaway: The Lies We Told by Diane Chamberlain

The Lies We Told by Diane Chamberlain is truly gripping, the story of two sisters who harbor the same grief of losing their murdered parents at a young age, yet so different in their personalities.
Rebecca and Maya are both doctors, Maya is the quite one, calm and reserved and has never really taken a risk in her life. On the other hand is Rebecca, the older of the two who is the ultimate risk taker. She has been traveling around the world working for Doctors International Disaster Aid in which she helps in disaster relief sites. This is how she ended up in North Carolina. A hurricane has breezed in and cause extensive damage, so Rebecca has convinced Maya to come help with the help of Maya's husband Adam who also happens to be a doctor.

Tragedy strikes again and Maya finds herself fighting for her life. Her helicopter has crashed on a small island off NC and Rebecca and Adam believe she is dead.

The bond in grief that Rebecca and Adam share is understandable as they both love Maya, but I found myself frustrated by it non the less. Rebecca rubbed me the wrong way, but I must admit I think that was the intention of the author. As well with Adam, I was perplexed by him because it was clear to me how he loved Maya, despite their marital stress over not being able to have a child, yet he came off as callus at times. Rebecca at times seems hollow on the inside, her heart made of stone, only really caring about herself. Although she loves Maya they are both resentful of each other and there are some very bitter feelings underneath.

A captivating story that just rang so true to life for me, the personalities of the individual characters really came to life for me, any of them could me your friends, your neighbors or even you. A riveting plot and fantastical elements of the story where I felt apart of the character's lives. I couldn't ask for anything more addictive than that!

Maya and Rebecca Ward are both accomplished physicians, but that's where the sisters' similarities end. As teenagers, they witnessed their parents' murder, but it was Rebecca who saved Maya from becoming another of the gunman's victims. The tragedy left Maya cautious and timid, settling for a sedate medical practice with her husband, Adam, while Rebecca became the risk taker.

After a devastating hurricane hits the coast of North Carolina, Rebecca and Adam urge Maya to join them in the relief effort. To please her husband, Maya finally agrees. She loses herself in the care and transport of victims, but when her helicopter crashes into raging floodwaters, there appear to be no survivors.

Forced to accept Maya is gone, Rebecca and Adam turn to one another—first for comfort, then in passion—unaware that, miles from civilization, Maya is injured and trapped with strangers she's not certain she can trust. Away from the sister who has always been there to save her, now Maya must find the courage to save herself—unaware that the life she knew has changed forever.

About Me

My Photo
Brande
I am a working mom with an addiction to coffee, chocolate, and books.. I read an average 3 to 4 books a week to escape reality. I have setup this site to organize my own thoughts and help others when choosing what to read. Since I can be a dimwit at times I decided to keep a record of the books I read. This record turned into reviews so I would remember if I liked the book I forgot I had read. I am not particularily funny and my grammer sucks so please don’t expect much. Basically I don’t know jack about many things, but I do know what I like in a novel and what makes me want to spend my money on an author.
