My Nora Encounter
It’s that time of year. Next week, the Romance Writers of America hold their annual national conference. Every year hundreds of writers, both established and newbies, attend RWA National to learn their craft, network with editors and agents, meet old and new friends, and listen to inspiring workshops and speeches.
Best of all, this conference allows all us ‘normal’ people to catch glimpses and maybe even exchange conversations with the super-stars of our industry. The big names all put in appearances – Sherrilyn Kenyon, Susan Elizabeth Philips, Jennifer Crusie, and of course, Nora Roberts. Being in close proximity to people held in such high esteem often results in some close encounters of the star-struck kind. One of my friends admits to having a verbal meltdown when she ran into her long-time idol Julie Garwood. Another said she suffered from acute shaky hands syndrome while attempting to help Nora with a potential wardrobe malfunction backstage at an awards ceremony. Such stories abound before, during, and after National.
I’ve been lucky enough to attend four National conferences in the past six years. I always have an enjoyable time, but I’ll never forget my very first National conference in 2005 because that is when I had my own personal Nora (Roberts) Encounter.
It was the Booksellers’ Awards Luncheon, and by the time my buddy Willena and I met up and made our way into the crowded ballroom, there were seemingly no tables with two seats remaining. I’d resigned myself to eating at two different places, but not Willena who marched right up to a table way in the back with a huge “Reserved” sign but only three people seated at it. She was already half into a seat and pulling me into the one next to her as she asked if it was all right for us to sit down (not a shy bone in her body, my buddy Willena)! Two other lost-looking newbies sat down too as soon as the lovely, petite lady nodded. But she added that we had to save one empty seat for her friend who was running late. Then she introduced herself as Cindy Hwang, editor at Berkley.
Good thing I was already sitting down when she introduced herself, not that having lunch with a well-known editor wasn’t heady enough. But I recognized the two other people sitting at the table across from me, although they politely introduced themselves anyway – Jayne Ann Krentz and Christine Feehan. Oh. My. Gosh! I was tongue-tied with awe as I introduced myself as Ms. Unpublished Nobody. The other two newbies were similarly afflicted. Even Willena was a bit ruffled.
We were rescued from the awkward silence by the waiters who placed our luncheon plates, dessert plates, and filled our drinks, including the empty spot for Ms. Hwang’s elusive friend. I don’t think I tasted a thing in my main course as Jayne Ann and Christine politely asked each of us what sub-genres we wrote. I was too nervous trying to form a coherent reply.
We started our dessert – my favorite, cheesecake – as the mistress of ceremony stepped upon the stage and approached the microphone. The seat next to Ms. Hwang was still glaringly empty. However, as the speaker began, the back door of the ballroom opened and in rushed none other than Nora Roberts!
I know I gasped audibly and I think Willena and the other two unpublished writers did the same, while Nora hurried over and sat down at our table. Then she did something for which I will adore her forever. She shoved aside her main course plate, pulled the cheesecake toward her and took a big bite. Yes, indeed, she was a woman after my own heart. She ate her dessert first!
She’d only managed to eat about half her portion when the speaker began talking about the next award and started describing the In Death series. Nora muttered an expletive under her breath, jumped up and ran for the stage. When she got to the microphone, I remember she made a witty remark about not needing to do the treadmill today. She never did make her way back to our table, but it didn’t matter. She’d already made four new fans.
After lunch, I went up to my room, called my critique partner and screeched in her ear, “You won’t believe who sat at our table at lunch!” When the conference was over, I returned home and started reading the In Death series, and every time I read a new one, I still remember my Nora encounter.
Have you had your own star-struck encounter? Please share it!

I have! A couple of years ago (three, I think) I went to the Saturday book signing at the Romantic Times convention. With all those authors in one room, I was in AWE! As we walked down each aisle, I spotted one favorite author after another, and ended up gushing like a love-struck fangirl to many of them. But my adoration was completely genuine. I mean, Mary Balogh, Shayla Black and Gaelen Foley, for goodness' sake! All in one room!!! Not to mention all the others who write the books that I so dearly love. I was with two friends who like reading but aren't nearly as obsessed as I am, so they just walked along beside me, smiling indulgently, as I babbled about how cool the event was. And BOY was I sweating! LOL! Oh, that was such a wonderful day!
July 22, 2010 8:48 AMI got so busy gushing (again - such a fangirl!) that I forgot to mention that I'm a follower and here's my email: aromagik@gmail.com

July 22, 2010 11:11 AMI guess the most starstruck I have been is when I met Dez from the band Coal Chamber (which was my fave band all through high school). I was so nervous that I got tongue-tied when we were talking...it was so embarrassing.

I haven't had the pleasure of a star-struck encounter yet, AC, but don't be surprised if the cat's got my tongue when we have the chance to meet someday ;) And I love your Nora story! I've always loved her writing, but I've got to admire a woman who understands her food priorities, too! ;)

Woah! I probably wouldn't have been able to stop hyperventilating if Nora Roberts came to sit at my table.
July 22, 2010 12:58 PMAs for my star struck moment, I haven't been to a lot of conventions about books or even to concerts or anywhere else where I might stumble across a celebrity. But I do remember about 2 months ago, I wrote a review for 'Some Like It Wild' by Teresa Mederios. I was shocked when I saw that she Retweeted it and linked it on her fb. It was one of the first times an author noticed me publicly and I remember just being in awe. It goes down as a memorable moment for me because it was a few weeks after I started the blog and I didn't expect it to happen.

Good Morning Everyone!
July 22, 2010 1:13 PMI'm thrilled to be here today, and I think I must owe Book Junkie my first-born or something for that WONDERFUL review of TWIS! I'm sooo happy you enjoyed the book. Hearing from readers who LURVED my books is what makes this writing gig worthwhile! Can't thank you enough,
AC
LOL aromagik!
July 22, 2010 1:15 PMI know what you mean about the RWA Literacy signing. I participated last year for the very first time and it is overwhelming for the authors too! I couldn't believe that HUGE room could feel claustrophobic, but it did! SOOO many people in one place and sooo many of them FABULOUS authors. What an experience!
AC
Hey Bethie,
July 22, 2010 1:16 PMI remember watching (and loving) One Day at a Time. We were both in our play pens, I'm sure! ;-)

This book sounds great! No, I've never met anyone famous nor have I been any where near a famous person.
July 22, 2010 1:18 PMThanks!

Deedles and Meredith,
July 22, 2010 1:19 PMA lot of people (esp. those in Europe) that being from California means I see celebrities all the time. Actually, I've very rarely seen anyone famous unless it was at an event. However, I did once see Dustin Hoffman walking across the lobby of a hotel in downtown LA where I was staying for work. I heard this very familiar voice, turned around and there he was! (Yes, he is very short!) Nope, I couldn't say a word.
AC
Sherry,
July 22, 2010 1:21 PMThanks for dropping by today. Honestly, I think most well-known people prefer not to be recognized in their everyday life. I really don't blame them.
Best of luck in the contest and I hope you enjoy TWIS.

July 22, 2010 1:21 PMUm, I met Michael J Fox back in '84 and he was nice. I also know Dave Wakeling from The English Beat... one of the nicest people EVER!! Dated a few 'famous' guys from punk band back in the day and hung out with others (DI, Guttermouth, Social D etc). I knew Flea before he was Flea....lol. I am sure no one has any idea who any of these people are beyond Michael J Fox...lol.

Throuthehaze,
July 22, 2010 1:26 PMWhat a cool experience to see your favorite band! My ONE claim to fame that my son actually thinks is cool (well, he did think seeing Dustin Hoffman was pretty good) when I was a very young teen, I saw The Doors perform. Talk about dating yourself, but I'll never forget seeing Jim Morrison! If my mother had known anything about their reputation, she'd have never let me go! ;-)
Hope you enjoy TWIS,

July 22, 2010 1:36 PMYou'd be surprised how obsessive we authors get about reviews. We cling to those good ones like peanut butter! It really does mean so much to know that a reader "got" your book. We all crave that kind of validation.

No star struck author encounter here. I was hoping for some at RWA this year. However, when it had to be moved to Orlando, I was stuck with nonrefundable reservations in Nashville. So I leave for Nashville Sunday and will be there reading books by authors I had hoped to meet.
I did meet actor Jim Varney in the mid-1990's. He played Ernest P. Worrell in commercials and movies. It was a surprise. instead of the dumb hick he portrayed, we met a very personable, classically trained Shakespearean actor. He was at the children's museum where I worked for a fundraiser event. We had an Ernest look alike contest. He couldn't understand why anyone would want to look and act like Ernest. He was friendly and generous with his time. My children and their friend were with me behind the scenes and he spent time talking with each of them and posing for pictures. It is a shame he died in 2000. I would like to have seen him show his talents in some serious works.
Love the sound of your books. We love to travel and Ireland and Scotland are on the list for our first big overseas trip. Hopefully that will be soon. Good luck with the release of THE WILD IRISH SEA. It sounds like my kind of story.

July 22, 2010 2:29 PMA friend and I saw Al Pacino and Diane Keaton on a movie line at the Thalia Theatre in Manhattan. We had such a good time watching them and everyone else around them who were watching them. Once the lines were let in to see the movie, we forgot they were even there.

I hate to admit that at 67 I have never been star struck. But I was named after the actress Brenda Marshall, and middle name after the heroine of the book 7th Heaven my mom was reading. Does that count? lol
July 22, 2010 2:39 PMI love the suspense, action, and intrigue of CIA, FBI, etc stories. I also like romance with HEA. lol

What a cool blog post! I would love to go to one of these conferences one day.
July 22, 2010 3:37 PMWhile I haven't met anyone in person, the first time I went to an authors blog and they were actually answering questions that we all left in the comments...I was so thrilled. I found the Quills blog where Jayne Ann Krentz blogs and I've been a huge fan forever, so when I realized that authors actually talk on their blogs and other blogs...I was so excited.
maybe that's why you can find me at so many blogs now..lol
Most people probably don't know who these people are anymore. They were kind of popular back in the late 90's. When I was a teenager I went to a Kottonmouth Kings concert and got to kind of hang out with the members of the band before and after the show. I am shy anyway and I was very star-struck by them at the time. It was pretty exciting for me to meet them and they were very nice. I am a GFC follower.

July 22, 2010 5:50 PMI had no idea Jim Varney was a Shakespearean actor, but I'm not surprised. He was such a clever actor and sounds like he was a wonderful person also. Thanx so much for sharing your story!
On my very first trip to England in the mid 80s, I saw Henry V at the Royal Shakespeare Theater in Stratford on Avon, and you'll never believe who played the title role... this young unknown Irish actor named Kenneth Branagh!
Hope you make it to Ireland, England and Scotland someday soon, and I hope you enjoy The Wild Irish Sea.
AC
Hi Kara,
July 22, 2010 5:52 PMI just saw that you sneaked in a comment! Have you checked the Casablanca Author's blog lately? I do believe you won a prize there. :-)

July 22, 2010 5:55 PMAl Pacino is one of my favorite actors! How lucky you were to see him and Diane K. And how nice that nobody bothered them in the theater.
One of my best friends once saw Clint Eastwood at the airport, but she was too scared to say anything. I probably would have been too!

MissKallie,
July 22, 2010 5:58 PMHow cool to be named after an actress and a character in a book. As you probably read on my website, my first name was a compromise my parents came up with between Cynthia and Lucille. ;-) And I named my son after a character in Mary Stewart's The Moonspinners.
I hope you enjoy The Wild Irish Sea and I appreciate you putting it on your TBR list.

Hi! Growing up in New York City, I've seen many celebrities but know well enough not to acknowledge any on the street. The celeb who made me squeal quietly to myself was Deborah Harry of the group Blondie (she was shorter than I thought she'd be). The celeb who made my friends squeal (we were walking down the street) was Yoko Ono who looked at us while we stared at her (and her bodyguards). The most fun celeb encounter was with author/illustrator Berkeley Breathed ("Bloom County"). I joked that since the last book signing of his that I attended was over twenty years ago, I'll see him in another twenty. He said that he would not to look any older.

I've had a star-struck experience. I went to a Rick Springfield concert and the man stood right in front of me and sang. Everyone was touching him and oo-ing and awe-ing and I stood there stiff as a board. I wanted to touch his arm and then I saw how sweaty he was and froze. I found that a yuck factor I guess. I'm sure he wondered why my hand froze in mid-air and I yanked it back at my side. lol (As he walked away, I did touch his shirt.) My girlfriends still won't let me live that down.
