Spencer owns almost all of the coins, but the founder (Leo Chatwick), of the coins and the club ends up dead, murdered and Spencer is also suspected of the deed by one of the other members (Julian Bellamy ).
Spencer is not really the charmer The Ton believes him to be, he really hates all the balls and all the rules of society in general. He has been dubbed, The Duke of Midnight, showing up at midnight to the balls, picking his partner then whisking the beautiful woman off. But when Amelia gets him to dance with her, he is overwhelmed. She is not after the Duke of Midnight, but after forgiveness of debt on her brother's behalf. He owes the Duke a ridiculous amount of money from his gambling debts and Amelia wants the Duke to forgive the debt.
What happens is that Spencer slowly falls in love with her instead.
Spencer has his own secrets and he isn't about to let Amelia in, no matter what. But sweet and persistent Amelia has wormed her way into Spencer's heart forever. Their love affair, tremulous as time, humorous with Amelia's wit and Spencer's downright arrogant behavior is simply addictive. Her loyalty to her brother, the only family she has left and even her sensible patience with Spencer's obnoxious and youthful ward makes her shine evermore. Their attraction and connection is undeniable and makes you want more and more! I just couldn't get enough.
True temptation begins at midnight…
A handsome and reclusive horse breeder, Spencer Dumarque, the fourth Duke of Morland, is a member of the exclusive Stud Club, an organization so select it has only ten members — yet membership is attainable to anyone with luck. And Spencer has plenty of it, along with an obsession with a prize horse, a dark secret, and, now, a reputation as the dashing “Duke of Midnight.” Each evening he selects one lady for a breathtaking midnight waltz. But none of the women catch his interest, and nobody ever bests the duke — until Lady Amelia d’Orsay tries her luck.
In a moment of desperation, the unconventional beauty claims the duke’s dance and unwittingly steals his heart. When Amelia demands that Spencer forgive her scapegrace brother’s debts, she never imagines that her game of wits and words will lead to breathless passion and a steamy proposal. Still, Spencer is a man of mystery, perhaps connected to the shocking murder of the Stud Club’s founder. Will Amelia lose her heart in this reckless wager or win everlasting love?
