Night Glitter by Jill Shure took me by surprise really. I have to be honest, I didn't know what to expect, I don't think I have ever read a book that was based in the 1930's which was the depression era here in the US that has always intrigued me. And nothing more intriguing then an adventure through adversity and love, especially through such a tumultuous time in our history.
This is the story of Jeri Devlin who's husband has just abandoned her, handing her some money and instructing her to head off to California where she belongs. Jeri doesn't realize how sick her husband Lex is. He is suffering from TB (tuberculosis), and in a sanitarium back in New York. Their marriage has been on the outs of late with Lex pulling away more and more everyday. But what he is doing, although misguided is out of love for Jeri. He doesn't want to get her sick too and worries that unless he pushes her away emotionally and physically.
Off to California Jeri goes in search of her relatives, but when she finds them they are NOT what she expected at all, minus one. Her cousin who welcomes her to stay at her brothel in which she is the madam. One thing leads to another she is having a smoldering affair with a married man! But Jeri is lonely, confused and although I thought she was a strong character she seemed more human that anything in her flaws. She felt so lost to me that at times I was happy she was having an affair with Franky, no matter the consequences. But all doesn't end up roses and as we all know roses have thorns. Jeri did shine for me though, she was in-depth character that perfectly illustrating the struggles of a down and out woman alone in the 1930's in my mind. And frankly she was simply charming, even if she is on the run from the mob back in NY who has learned her whereabouts! Fun dialog that flowed seamlessly and an intriguing plot that kept me turning every page with more and more enthusiasm and anticipation of what was yet to come!!
