His At Night by Sherry Thomas

This is my first Sherry Thomas book, her newest release from Bantam Books, HIS AT NIGHT.  First I was overwhelmed and sucked in by the beauty of the cover, they are truly outdoing themselves these days, so tempting. Second the blurb for the book. That did it for me

The Marquess of Vere is a secret agent for England and the Crown, but his persona to the world is idiot. No one takes him too seriously and equate his non-sensual behavior to an riding accident when he was a teenager. A blow to the head. But it couldn't be further from the truth. Swindled and trapped into a marriage before he could realize what was happening to him. Wam! He's married, but he fights his attraction for her as he knows this marriage can not last. Still he is truly upset at her for her deception and for their subsequent betrothal.
Elissande has lived a sheltered and horrible life, an invalid of an aunt she has taken care of and an uncle who is downright cruel. So even Vere's rejection of her, although painful, is just par for the course of her miserable life.
Vere has been investigating her Uncle Douglas for some time and means to take the man down. But as they learn her aunt has been drugged this entire time so her secrets have been kept at bay. Through the investigation and as their relationship continues, Vere and Elissande get A LITTLE close. The title I felt was a little deceiving as their encounters were cold and few. Vere almost seemed cruel to me, and even towards the end I couldn't rationalize his cruelty and ignorance of Elissande's feelings to justifiably accept that they would be together. It was a bit of a hard pill to swallow.
Although I must say that storyline was intriguing and plot twist that kept me turning the pages. This was a mild read for me when it came to romance between Vere and Elissande, no connection, no heat and most definitely no love loss between the two. When they tell each other the love each other it was a hard concept to imagine. I quite simply didn't like Vere.

Love is hottest in the darkness before dawn.
Elissande Edgerton is a desperate woman, a virtual prisoner in the home of her tyrannical uncle. Only through marriage can she claim the freedom she craves. But how to catch the perfect man?
Lord Vere is used to baiting irresistible traps. As a secret agent for the government, he’s tracked down some of the most devious criminals in London, all the while maintaining his cover as one of Society’s most harmless—and idiotic—bachelors. But nothing can prepare him for the scandal of being ensnared by Elissande.
Forced into a marriage of convenience, Elissande and Vere are each about to discover that they’re not the only one with a hidden agenda. With seduction their only weapon—and a dark secret from the past endangering both their lives—can they learn to trust each other even as they surrender to a passion that won’t be denied?

About Me

My Photo
Brande
I am a working mom with an addiction to coffee, chocolate, and books.. I read an average 3 to 4 books a week to escape reality. I have setup this site to organize my own thoughts and help others when choosing what to read. Since I can be a dimwit at times I decided to keep a record of the books I read. This record turned into reviews so I would remember if I liked the book I forgot I had read. I am not particularily funny and my grammer sucks so please don’t expect much. Basically I don’t know jack about many things, but I do know what I like in a novel and what makes me want to spend my money on an author.
