Madison is a Arizona Game and Fish Ranger who takes her job VERY seriously, especially coming from a home where her desire to save wildlife was always good for a laugh amongst the men in her family who are in law enforcement. A desire to prove herself worthy, almost costing her everything, including her life, with her latest investigation into animal killings at a nearby ranch. Some wild animal is loose and keeping the killings under wraps while capturing and taking down the animal is her main priority made clear by her boss and ex-boyfriend.
She fails, it could mean her job. Wouldn't that be a laugh for her family.
But failure is not an option with Madison, one thing that attracted me to her character, she made mistakes and sometimes iffy judgement calls but she stuck by them firmly no matter the consequences. One of those decisions was her involvement with Kaletake, a Hopi Native who is an artist and sculptor. Living on the neighboring land from the site of the animal killings, she can't help but be attracted to the man and a little suspicious at the same time. And while Kal is beautiful and talented he also seemed to have a gentle nature about him, one I found alluring.
In trying to protect Madison, Kal pushes her away, but with each encounter they have she digs her way a little bit deeper into his heart. Not quite sure he isn't evil himself and responsible for the killings he continues to send her mixed feelings. Madison on the other hand I found to be refreshingly brave despite her interactions with the unknown beast and Kal's hot and cold attitude towards her.
Kal fears who he is and quite frankly I too was unsure as I weaved my way through the story. As the son of a Hopi Native White Eagle, his mother was a Starchild, a spiritual being, Kal is destined to be the protector of his people, of all people with the help of The Great Coyote. But what Kal is fighting is pure evil, a skinwalter, an evil spirit encompassing a human host.
All powerful and gaining ground every full moon he must also protect Madison who is unaware that such an evil entity is the cause of all these deaths. More will come if Kal can not fight to save her from getting in the way. She is determined to capture the beast but is in way over her head.
Why did I love this book so much, it kept me guessing until the very end, the action scenes were fantastic and let's just say a little surprising towards the end, which had me speed reading just to take it all in. A little mystery and suspense wrapped in a whole lot of very carnal yet sensual encounters between a man who is determined that it is best to stay away from his new lover and a woman who just can't let that happen. Willing to risk her life and her job to capture a creature who wants nothing more than to kill again and a man who wants nothing more than to continually push her away in hopes of saving her life. This story is beautify and engaging, passionate and suspenseful, capturing my heart and my full attention in my own quest to find out if Kal and Madison will make it and who the heck the killer really is. So many times my theory of who done it was thwarted and yet I was thrilled to stay on the edge of my seat until the very last word just to find out!
