Ten things you didn't know about Fiona Jayde
10. That thing that says I speak Russian fluently on my author bio is absolutely true. But what you didn't know is that I was actually born in the Soviet Union. I was a card-carrying member of the Pioneers (Scouts). I almost finished fifth grade there before we moved to the United States. I still read Russian fiction - there is a romantic suspense author Tatiana Ustinova that I just love and wish someone would translate her to the American audience cause she is awesome.
9. I have two cats. I've never really liked cats - always was a dog person. But one day, the cat from our upstairs neighbor meowed at our door until we let him in. He then proceeded to adopt me. Now I rarely write without feline supervision. My other cat was found by my hubby - big softie that he is. He - the cat, not the hubby - was a little orange puff of fur that someone left in a park. Now he is affectionately known as Orange Trouble. His big highlight of the day is if he can outrun the spray bottle. At 6 in the morning.
8. I am obsessed with the idea of martial arts. The idea of the duality of peace and violence, life and death, defense and attack has always been fascinating to me. My biggest pet peeve is when TV shows portray various martial arts wrongly. I mean - if one goes into a Krav Maga class - which is the martial art studied by the Israeli army and really has nothing to do with ancient Japanese philosophies, why bow Japanese style?
7. I can talk about writing for hours. To anyone who'll listen. Theme, style, purpose, you name it. My good friend Lacey Savage and I run a blog called Tips and Wips - dedicated to writing. Really, its just another reason to buy and then discuss writing books and classes.
6. My favorite authors include Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb, Anne Stuart, J.R. Ward, Linda Howard, Nalini Singh, Beth Kery, Lacey Savage, Nathalie Gray and Shiloh Walker. One of my dreams is that Nora - upon being interviewed - tells someone that she hadn't slept the previous night because she couldn't put down a book by moi. (Hey, its only fair.. I can't sleep because I can't put down her books)
5. I adore strong kickass female heroines. Buffy, Starbuck, Eve Dallas, Fiona from Burn Notice (not just because she's my namesake, but because she can kick some seriously serious ass!).. If it's got a strong yet vulnerable female lead, I'm a fan for life.
4. I cry at emotional scenes at movies. I don't want to. But I can't help it. I think I'm a softie. Don't tell anyone.
3. I play piano - sometimes even well. I've played off and on since I was five years old. Sometimes I even like it enough to want to take lessons again, but I have only enough discipline for writing and practicing scales over and over was something I left in the murky years of childhood. I do have a dozen jazz piano books sitting on my Clavinova - someday I hope to crack them open. I love playing piano when it rains.
2. I paint. I have a degree in art, but I can't draw a stick figure. Then I discovered Bob Ross - you know that guy on PBS that is so mellow and paints happy little trees? Well he taught me to paint. And not too badly if I do say so myself. I even sold a painting once:) Like piano I don't really have the discipline to practice it everyday - that's really reserved for writing - but every time I'm in an art store I think about going back to it. Maybe once its nice outside, I'll drag out the painting cart again.
1. I love action adventure type romances. I mostly read romance, thought sometimes I'll foray into another genre if strongly recommended by trusted parties (i.e. my sister or hubby). I also love writing action adventure type romances. My latest release Cold Victory is actually one of my favorite subgenres to read - a sci-fi futuristic space opera: war and love, duty and desire, betrayal and revenge

BLURB:
Blurb for Cold Victory:Intergalactic warfare has not been kind to humans. Convicted pilot Zoya Scott has the chance to avenge her family, redeem an act of desperation with that of sacrifice. She’ll end this war if she betrays the man whose touch burns through her soul, the man whose ship and crew she must destroy. The man who is her bloodmate.Commander Galen Stark never expected the convicted pilot on his ship to be anything more then a good looking inconvenience. A small brush of their hands grips him with vicious lust, a need he can’t control. She is his bloodmate – a biological reaction burning through his veins.Except she carries an explosive. And Stark may have to give the order to destroy them all
EXCERPT:
“Excuse me, Commander.” Those gold eyes flared.
“Perhaps you were misled about their skill level. Most of them never had field experience. Their battle skills were taught in hologames.”
Stark had to get away from her before his damned glands forced him into doing something stupid. Like kissing her.
Fucking her breathless. Feeling her shuddering around him as she came.
“So noted.”
“Right.” A bitter smirk. Those eyes went dull again, as if he were responsible for leeching out the light inside them.
“Your job is to give orders and coordinate attacks. You don’t know who is out there dying.”He couldn’t breathe without taking in her heat, couldn’t think beyond the words she hurled at him.
“You’re right, I don’t. I don’t know their names or anything about them. They’re just soldiers. They’re trained to follow orders.”Before he knew what he was doing, he roughly pulled at the sleeve of his undershirt, exposing neat rows of tattoos.
“I don’t know them.”
He shook his head, battling arousal, emotion, and frustration. “I just count their deaths.”Silence. He was an idiot to lose control like this, to share the part of himself which he’d always kept hidden. He was an idiot to need her to understand the only way he could grieve. He was an idiot to feel this raw, sexual pull toward her.
“I’m-I’m sorry.” Her voice thick, her eyes shattered, Zoya lightly touched the dots on his upper arm.
Shock rippled on his skin, pinpricks of heat and vicious, coiled lust. He nearly staggered, fighting the dark urge to cover her lush mouth while his body primed to take, to feast. Her eyes flared wide, yet she didn’t pull her arm away when his fingers closed around her wrist.
“You shouldn’t touch me.”
Her pulse beat hard under his fingertips, her skin like warm, smooth silk. He gave her time to back away, to rip her arm away, say something cutting. Yet she did nothing, simply looked up at him with hot, unguarded eyes, her mouth vulnerable and soft, seconds from his.Flashes of skin, hot gripping palms, moist hungry lips. Stark didn’t know when he pressed her against a bulkhead, when her hands clutched his shoulders, when her ragged breaths became his own.
He couldn’t get enough, couldn’t take a breath, couldn’t tear himself away from ravaging her lips, plunging into the sweet depth of her mouth.
Her scent was like a potent drug pumping into his veins. Lips fused, tongues mated, he kissed her like a starving man, as if both their lives depended on it.
Cupping her head, he held her steady for his onslaught, fighting himself, fighting against the soft, hitched breaths she made against his mouth.
Even as someone screamed inside his head about duty and protocol, the beast inside him wouldn’t let him stop.

I think considering that you spent a lot of your formative years in the Soviet Union, you have certainly mastered the English language as well.
February 8, 2010 7:00 AMHave you any plans to try and get any of your books published in Russia or maybe to write a book in Russian?
Is there a marked for your writing there or not?

Sounds like a great book I noticed we have a lot of the same authors that we read. I don't write but I can talk about books all day long I have met strangers at the book store and started conversations with them about our favorite authors.

Thanks for having me Book Junkie!
February 8, 2010 5:39 PM@ BuddyT/Carol - I don't know if writing in Russian would be a good idea. My writing skills remained at fifth grade level... Maybe a children book? LOL I honestly don't know if there is a market for sci-fi romance, but I do know there is a market for Romantic Suspense - my other fave. Maybe someday I'll see myself translated to Russian:)
@Sherry - thanks! Awesome about talking about books all day long - same here:)
@Jase - I never thought of Russian as feline LOL but I think it would definitely be so.. All those rolling Rs. (I start rolling my Rs when I'm emotional - it's kinda funny)
@ Carol L - thanks! Thrilled that you enjoyed the post! And I agree about Nora (The next inDeath is coming up in 3 weeks - I can hardly wait!)
@ Joye - thank you!
@Tamsyn - so glad you enjoyed both the interview and excerpt!
@Jennifer - I agree, Bob Ross does have a really soothing voice that can put you to sleep. It helps if you have an easel and paints around so you physically do the painting rather then watch. Alternatively, he is a great prelude to an afternoon nap:)
@throuthehaze - thanks! I do love that cover as well - Anna Cain kicked ass with it!
@Amanda - glad you enjoyed the post! Its always fun to discover new authors and genres:) I used to adore historicals a la Johanna Lindsay, especially the Malory series.
So nice to meet someone who can't help crying at movies-- though I would rather stick a needle in my eye than watch a Nicholas Sparks movie-- I cried all day last time I did. Geesh.
February 8, 2010 6:26 PMI love kick ass female heroines too. How about River from Firefly and the Serenity movie. Very kick-butt!
Another Fiona!
February 8, 2010 7:18 PMYou sound like my kind of author! I especially like the thing about kick ass heroines! I can't wait to read one of your books.
Fiona Vance
Who writes kick-ass erotic historical heroines!
I spent most of my early years on German army bases, or driving around with my parents to get a taste of the local culture. I wasn't as immersed into it as you were, but it still gave me a great appreciation of how wonderfully different countries and people are. Does your early experience help you in your writing at all?
February 8, 2010 7:49 PMlove this blurb and preview. I really would love to read this one
February 8, 2010 8:56 PMSorry got sidetracked by sidebar.
February 9, 2010 12:20 AMWow Fiona, raised in Russia. I too like a kick ass heroine that needs her man. I agree about Nora I have stayed up reading many books I couldn't put down, so the favor should be returned.
Zina
Fiona, How exciting, both your book and your life. You are new author for me but will add you to my list. This does sound like a great book.
February 9, 2010 9:39 AMI have been avid reader for over 50 yrs and will be getting your book to read. Thanks for your visit.
@Moonsanity - great handle!!! We won't tell anyone our secret:) Ya know - I have this whole thing with Firefly. I'm a Netflix junkie and managed to get Serenity first. Well the whole thing confused the living crap outta me - so I sent it back half watched and figured JossW should stick with Urban Fantasy. But the more I bitch about it, the more everyone is telling me I should give it another chance:)
February 9, 2010 2:24 PM@FionaVance - Hi! ooh - kickass historical heroines?? Tell me more!
@Marcieo - I may have to ping you and pick your brain what its like to grow up on army bases. Sounds really interesting! I don't know how much my early experience helps me in terms of writing, but there are SO many terrific books that I read as a kid - books that wouldn't have been available here. I think they definitely shaped me.
@PamK - thanks! Glad you stopped by!
@Zina - hiya!! And too true about Nora!
@Misskallie2000 - thanks for your comment! I love avid readers - I'm one myself. I grew up with my nose in a book - most girls wanted designer jeans, I wanted $$ for bookstores or rides to the library:)
Thanks for the excerpt. I'm a reader and was when I was growing up. I loved going to the library.
February 10, 2010 8:43 AMCold Victory is going straight to my TBB list. I love Sci-Fi Futuristic type romances but there hasn't always been a lot of it. I'm thankful it's a genre that starting to show some growth! annhonATaolDOTcom
