Remember that book? It was subtitled “How Toys Become Real,” and it told the story of a toy bunny who, through his devotion to a child, became a living, breathing, hopping rabbit—but it wasn’t until he cried an actual tear that the Nursery Magic Fairy appeared and gave him life.
My fictional characters become real through a similar process. Once I’ve thoroughly tortured them by tossing obstacles in their path like an evil flower girl strewing exploding rose petals, their personalities take shape and they start having reactions and responses that aren’t necessarily dictated by me, their so-called creator.
This makes writing as interesting for me as reading, because I never really know what’s going to happen next. I steer them through the plot as best I can, but eventually they set off bravely to determine their own destinies. I’m so proud of them when that happens! It’s like sending your firstborn off to kindergarten.
Of course, you don’t necessarily want your characters to take control of your story. Some of my heroes, for example, want to jump into bed with the heroine way too soon. And way too often. If Luke in Cowboy Trouble had his way, I’d be writing pure erotica!
You can’t let them tell you what to do—but you can’t dictate their every move, either. Once a character is established, they won’t necessarily be willing or able to steer their way through every plot point you’ve mapped out. They’ll find more interesting and creative ways to navigate the story. And if you open yourself to your character’s true personality, you’ll end up with a better, more believable book. In a way, the plot becomes a collaboration between you and your character.
I know, I know. That sounds crazy. The character is in my head, right? So how can he or she act independently?
I don’t know, but it gets even weirder than that. Sometimes characters you never planned on show up and demand a part in the story. For example, in Cowboy Trouble, I thought I knew what the waitress at the local diner, would be like. She’d be a world-weary single mom with a prematurely lined face and permanently sore feet from waiting tables.
But when I sat my heroine down at the table, that’s not who showed up. Instead, it was Josie, a teenager with the hair of a rock star, the fashion sense of a 1920s flapper, and the personality of Betty Boop. She went on to become a major part of the story, and let me tell you, she livened things up a lot.
I didn’t “make up” Josie—not on purpose, anyway. I don’t know anyone remotely like her. And while I’m not a “woo-woo” kind of person, she convinced me that somewhere out there is a fictional character Purgatory, where characters wait like unborn babies for their turn at existence.
That’s one reason I’m thrilled to see Cowboy Trouble hit the bookstores. It’s like I’ve released these characters into the world, where they’ll become part of readers’ lives – and then they’ll really, truly become real. What about you? What are your favorite kinds of characters to read about?

Congratulations on the new book Joanne! I like all different types of character from ones who are quiet and determined to fun-loving and active ones.

February 24, 2010 10:37 AMGreat post and this sounds like a fantastic book!
I love all kinds of characters.....I love to find books where I think I know what the characters are going to be like but I really don't, they surprise me! :)
I love grumpy men. :)

I love characters who are strong, hard working, striving to make something of their lives...flawed in some manner (physical or psychological). I like realistic characters who despite their flaws or weaknesses push the limits to lead a better life. I enjoy reading about characters who are slightly unorthodox or eccentric...they are willing to break rules to do the right thing.
February 24, 2010 11:35 AMHappy Reading

I love to read about characters that have secret pasts or double lives. Makes for very interesting reading!!
February 24, 2010 11:38 AMPlease enter my name in your wonderful draw. Thanks.
My favorite kind of characters to read about are the funny, strong women characters. I like to read a lot of books that are set in NYC with career women - chick-lit basically lol.
February 24, 2010 11:52 AMPlease enter me in, I'm a follower. I would love to read this book.

I like alpha males with strong women. I also enjoy entertaining characters as you described Josie.
February 24, 2010 12:05 PMainfinger@comcast.net
My favorite characters are cowboys----tortured, handsome, alpha guys.
February 24, 2010 3:54 PMkissinoak at verizon dot net
I like strong female characters. I like the male characters a little bit bad with redeeming qualities.
February 24, 2010 4:00 PMlizzi0915 at aol dot com
I like the strong silent type. A man of few words but all action. He'll be there when you need him.. in a heartbeat.

I love cowboys, the strong ones with flaws! You just can't beat them!

Well, I like all kind of characters!! Depends on my mood. Sometimes, I love a klutzy heroine.
February 24, 2010 10:00 PMOne thing I always love is a cowboy.. This book sounds really good, I hope I'm lucky enough to win. It's one I'm definitely going to have to read.

Wow, everybody! I went to my critique group and came back to all these comments! Thanks!
February 24, 2010 11:47 PMSiNn - If you like sasy, smart and funny characters, you're definitely a Cowboy Trouble kind of girl!
Maureen, too - funloving and active describes Libby to a T.
And Blanche, I'm happy to say at least one character in Cowboy Trouble is not what he seems!
slave to passion - thanks for the chuckle! Can I introduce you to my boss?
February 24, 2010 11:49 PMSteph - I love "chick lit" too, but there were so many city girls with high powered careers that I wanted to write about one who ditched the city and tried country life. That's what Libby's all about! Still, I never get tired of those chick lit girls. I espcially love the ones that work in publishing!
February 24, 2010 11:54 PMAndrea - You'll love Josie for sure. She's young and quirky, but under all her craziness she's a very strong girl. Someday she may end up with a book all her own. I just love her, and she was so real to me throughout the writing of the book!
February 24, 2010 11:55 PMEstella, I hear you about the cowboys! I wouldn't call Luke tortured - he's too resilient for that - but you're going to love Nate in my next book, One Fine Cowboy. He's definitely your kind of guy!
February 24, 2010 11:57 PMTracey, since you like the strong silent type, I'd fix you up with Nate, in One Fine Cowboy! It comes out in September. But I think you'll like Luke, too - he can charm anyone!
February 25, 2010 12:02 AMVirginia - I think cowboys are flawed by definition - in a good way! They're very masculine, and their lives aren't easy; it takes a lot of strength to make a living from the land out here.
February 25, 2010 12:04 AMI hope I answered everyone so far! I'll stop by in the morning to see what else everyone has to say. Thanks to everyone for commenting - it's really interesting to hear everyone's opinions!
February 25, 2010 12:09 AMI like characters who are funny and witty, but I also like ones who are really serious as well. I'm not picky, lol

Joanne, Congratulations on your new book.
February 25, 2010 1:05 AMJoanne and Brandi, Love the review/interview.
I like the heroine sassy, smart, pretty, humorous and capable of standing on her own feet yet will let the guy she loves knows she is there for him.
I like the hero to be strong, compassionate, humerous, good looking but with flaws. He must show the girl that he will always be there for her.
I love cowboys..
misskallie2000 at yahoo dot com
I love the strong, passionate, compassionate and loyal Alpha male highlander, cowboy, Duke and shape shifting wolves. :)Characters who have flaws but are redeemable.

Lucky4750@aol.com
Isi & Jas' Mom - I love funny, witty characters, too. I think you'll like Luke and Libby a lot!
February 25, 2010 10:49 AMMiss Kallie - Thanks! I so agree with your description of what makes a good character. To me, Luke's best quality is that he's always there for Libby - no questions, no doubts. And for his family, too. I like strong men who have a nurturing side.
February 25, 2010 10:50 AMCarol - Shape-shifting wolves? Have you read any books by my Sourcebooks sister, Terry Spear? Her wolf heroes are amazing.
February 25, 2010 10:52 AMIt looks like I missed a couple people last night. S7anna - your comment perfectly defined what a character should be. I might hang that one over my desk!
February 25, 2010 10:57 AMWanda - I agree with you on secret pasts. I like trying to figure out where a character's scars come from.
And Bethie, if you like characters that are a little on the bad boy side, you'll love the cowboy in the book I'm working on now!
I love to read about a strong alpha male, shape shifters and a woman that knows what she wants and will go after it and still be feminine while doing it.
February 25, 2010 11:12 AMsstrode@scrtc.com
I know this is old school...but I just love it when the heroine gets herself in a pickle and the Hero saves her behind. I like the alpha male, be it a Highland Warrior, a Cowboy or a Navy Seal.
February 25, 2010 11:43 AMmitzihinkey at sbcglobal dot net
Sherry - you make an interesting point about heroines. We want them to be strong and gutsy, but not at the cost of their femininity. This was a challenge with Libby because she's a little bit of a tomboy - but she still has her girlie side.
February 26, 2010 12:05 AMMitzi - we just talked about this in my critique goup last night. Some readers want the heroine to rescue herself; others are okay with the hero coming in on his white horse and saving her. In Cowboy Trouble, it's kind of a combination...
February 26, 2010 12:07 AMThanks for commenting!
What about you? What are your favorite kinds of characters to read about?
February 27, 2010 11:25 PMI like realistic characters who I can relate to. I like reading about "regular people" too. I can't stand "dumb" leading characters. They need to have some brains! :)

I love strong, witty, characters.
March 1, 2010 6:41 PMlag110@mchsi.com
My favorite type to read about is characters that hide their true feelings, and hide deep emotional scars (they eventually come around a bit, of course).
March 3, 2010 9:49 PMpatronus89013 at yahoo dot com
I like characters that are realistic. They need to have flaws, but they also need to be likable.

Hi Joanne, Congratulations on your new release. I love cowboys. I like it when the heroine has been through bad luck, hard times, and feels unloved and unwanted. Then she meets the hero cowboy and he was a little bad when young and been hurt in love also yet they come together and help each other to see there is hope and dreams do come true. They fall in love and live happily everafter.

March 4, 2010 2:36 PMI am a real readaholic, so I love all kinds of plots, characters, and settings. I will say that a cowboy is one of my favorite kinds of heroes. It doesn't matter if it is a contemporary or historical romance, a cowboy hero is hard to resist.

I like reading about characters with strong personalities(not overpowering or egotistical) that have overcome difficulties to become the people they want to be by the time they get their HEA.

First of all, I want realistic characters in realistic settings --no werewolves or vampires, no dukes or earls, either. Just regular people living their normal lives but falling in love -- which is a magical, paranormal enough event, at least for me.
March 6, 2010 9:00 AMI love heroes who take control, who love their ladies deeply yet don't lose themselves in passion, except in the bedroom. Heroes willing to die for their ladies but don't wear their hearts on their sleeves.
Heroines should be sexy, sassy, smart and independent. She doesn't really need a man in her life but finds them awfully nice to have around.
I hope to win this book. Cowboys are my 'thang'.

I love strong and a but shy cowboys best. The hat and boots looks so good and give an air "I know what I want" look. Course at times the hat and boots can go..along with other things if you know what I mean. ha ha I wish there were more books like yours around. Thanks for taking time to do this article and share your thoughts with us. susan L.
