I would like to give a warm welcome to author Katie Reus today for coming by Book Junkie. Katie has been gracious enough to answer a few of my questions as well as offer her latest book Miami Heat which releases today to one lucky winner! I have read Katie's Dangerous Deceptions, Everything to Lose, Running from the Past (you can read my review HERE), and just this last weekend I finished Adrianna's Cowboy which was written under Savannah Stewart. So enjoy the interview and Good luck!
Can you tell us a little about yourself ?
I’ve been reading romance for as long as I can remember, and I’m a firm believer that the world would be a much better place if more people read romance. When I’m not plotting or writing, I love to travel with my husband. Saint Augustine is one of my favorite places to getaway to because it’s close to the beach and the town is rich in history. I write romantic suspense, erotic romance, and paranormal romance, but no matter the genre, Happily Ever After is always a must. If you’d like to learn more about me, visit either of my websites http://www.katiereus.com/ or http://www.savannahstuart.com/
Can you tell the readers a little about Miami Heat?
This is a story of friends to lovers, one of my favorite story lines, and it takes place in hot Miami!
Here’s a brief blurb: When Madison Dubois witnesses a terrible crime, she goes to the only place she knows she’ll be safe, Detective Rafe Jackson’s house. Rafe has been in love with Madison Dubois for longer than he cares to admit. Unfortunately for him, she views him as a big brother. When she shows up on his doorstep terrified for her life, he has no choice but to keep her safe. Undeniable sparks fly when they’re forced to share a roof but unless he can keep her alive, their relationship might not have a chance to even start.
Which of your Books would you like to see turned into a movie and who would play the main characters?
City of Secrets. Jade would be played by Cote de Pablo and David would be played by Clive Owen.
Of the books that you have written, which is your favorite or feel the most connection to?
It’s really hard to pick a favorite because what story I happen to be working on is the one that’s speaking to me the loudest so that’s my favorite at the moment. They’re all special to me in different ways. However, Running From the Past will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the first erotic romance I ever tried writing. It placed first in the Great Expectations contest (unpublished), which is how I got a contract offer from Ellora’s Cave, and then it placed third in the Passionate Plume contest (published) the next year. The entire story just flowed so easily and that doesn’t always happen.
What advice would you give to people who "run out of creativity" when writing?
Luckily I haven’t faced that yet so I don’t really have any solid advice. If someone gets burned out, it’s probably a good idea to take a break.
What qualities are a must when creating your hero?
Honesty, loyalty, good work ethic, and sexy as hell to the heroine. Most (99%) of my heroes also have a military background, but I won’t say that it’s an absolute requirement.
Do book covers matter, would you go back and change any of yours if you could?
Yes they matter and yes I would, but I’m not going to answer which one because I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings.
What is the hardest part for you about creating/continuing on with a series?
My Miami Scorcher series with Ellora’s Cave is my first series and the hardest part is remembering to add little facts about werewolves and shifters in each book. I’m currently working on the third in the series and realized I was taking it for granted that readers would understand the mating and bonding process because I assumed they’d have read the first book. I have to remember that not all readers will have read the first or second and the world-building has to stay strong and consistent throughout each story.
Did you ever draw your characters from the personalities in your life?
Not consciously, but obviously my stories are all from the dark depths of my imagination so I only have my own perceptions of the world to go on. Everyone sees the world in a way unique to them, so it’s natural that I’m going to draw on people I’ve met and places I’ve visited.
Have you ever encountered someone who said, “You write what !!!"?
All the time, but usually it’s a good thing. My husband likes to tell people I write erotic romance and that he’s head of research and development. Not very subtle, but I’m thankful he’s supportive. He told some people at a party recently and the men were surprisingly impressed and wanted to ask me all sorts of questions, which was a little weird.
What is the most interesting thing you’ve done in the name of research?
Hmm, my research might sound boring because it involves a lot of internet research, hours of non-fiction reading, and in-person, phone, and/or email interviews. The only thing I can think of is I’ve gone to the gun range on more than one occasion to see the difference in how certain weapons fire from the perspective of a woman. I’ve also practiced ‘fighting’ with my husband to get a feel for writing fight scenes.
What was your favorite scene to write ever?
It’s actually unpublished as of yet, but the manuscript my agent is currently shopping has a final scene with a serial killer and the heroine. I get into the serial killer’s head throughout the book and I loved writing it because I had to dig deeper and write a little darker.
If you could ask readers any one question, what would it be?
Ack. This is hard because I know the answer will vary. What is your biggest pet peeve in romance?

Ahh... my biggest pet peeve in romance is when the heroine lets the hero save her with out helping him at all. Gotta give my heroines a little spunk! *wink*

I hate when they have the heroine being tougher than the hero it's almost like she's more of a man than he is. I don't want her to be a cry baby but I want her to be feminine.

Hi Katie!
January 19, 2010 12:41 PMMiami Heat sounds like an awesome book! :)
I love a kick-ass sassy girl who can take care of herself but I don't like it when she is over the top aggressive and mean!

My biggest pet peeve is the proliferation of supernatural themed romances. Maybe I'm too realistic but I can't stand that every other book has a vampire, werewolf, shapeshifter hero.
January 19, 2010 12:55 PMWhen I think of fantasy, I think "Handsome single billionaire marries dumpy poor nanny" stories! That's fantasy enough for me!
I'm with some of the others on the fact that I like a heroine that can take care of herself and help the hero save the day, but that is still feminine and not tougher than he is.

hmm I would say that I hate it when they just jump in bed right away without some kind of connection. The more you wait the hotter it is! (to a point of course, can't wait too long!)

Enter me in the contest.
January 19, 2010 7:10 PMI like strong heroes and heroines, but don't make either too aggressive.

The hidden baby storyline is the worst imho. I will immediately stop reading a book that contains that kind of storyline. It literally makes me cringe.

This book will make a great springbreak escape.

Please count me in. I would love to win this. My biggest pet peeve is when the hero and the heroine fall in love 30 seconds after they meet. It is more believable when it builds up to that.

my biggest one would have to be the cleche' where you know two pages in they r gonna live happily everafter i like when you can read it and theres real substance and drama not instant i love you blah blah then 2 chapters in they r married and startn a family. or the whole girls get with just the good guy or the bad guy was the girls first love also annoying

Hi Katie!
January 20, 2010 5:16 AMyou are a new author to me and thanks to your interview your book is now on my wishlist ;)
the ultimate pet peeve is an insufficient happy end - a few authors dedicate just a few pages for the happy end :(
wish you all the best,
Ina
Hi Katie,
January 20, 2010 7:38 AMCongrats on your latest release, Miami Heat. Love the cover!
My pet peeve would be repetition. Sometimes the author repeats the same information too many times throughout the book.
tamsyn5@yahoo.com
My pet peeve is that the I love you and falling into bed happens way too fast.

Lots of good ones here already, one of mine is the BIG MISUNDERSTANDING that goes on for chapters. Much prefer common sense and some good communication. Verbal sparring can be so much fun and give us some great sexual tension.
January 20, 2010 5:18 PMcaity_mack(at)yahoo(dot)com
My biggest pet peeve is that so many of the romance writers are now writing paranormal romance books, instead of the good old fashion romance novels. I hate paranormal romance books.
January 20, 2010 6:49 PMayancey(at)dishmail(dot)net
My biggest pet peeve is a weak heroine or hero. I don't necessarily mean I want a kick-ass hero or heroine, but someone who has character and learns to stand up for herself/himself.

One of my biggest pet peeves is the "I love you" spoken too soon. It drives me crazy, and yet it seems to always be the heroine that says it. Also the secret baby plots annoy me, they are fun to read, but sometimes completely unrealistic.

What Is Your Biggest Pet Peeve In Romance?
January 20, 2010 11:55 PMMy Biggest Pet Peeve In Romance Is When The Characters Go Through Hell And Back And Their Romance Is Like A Two Second After Thought That Gets Rushed Through Right At The End. That Makes Me Nuts When That Happens.
Great Interview, Miami Heat Sounds Like A Good Read.

I dont like when the heroes and heroines are all perfect!
January 21, 2010 12:02 AMmystica123athotmaildotcom
My biggest pet peeve used to be that all romance novels told the same story; just changing the names of the characters,locations,occupations----girl and boy from opposite sides of the track, they hate each other upon meeting, despite their disdain for one another they fall in love, they fight their feelings of love, finally they admit that they love one another and they marry.
January 21, 2010 12:11 PMThank God they have gotten much better. I tend to read the cozy romance or suspenseful romance. My current pet peeve is that the woman is often too needy and insecure.
Hi Katie/Savannah,
January 21, 2010 8:43 PMI've not read your books before, but after reading Book Junkie's reviews I think I've been missing out on a good thing.
To answer your question. My biggest pet peeve in romance is when a book is labeled a romance, when it really shouldn't. Several books that I read last year were categorized as romances (romantic suspense and paranormal romance) but they were really more suspense and urban fantasy. I don't like it when publishers brand a book one way because they know that that particular genre sells better than another. Just because it has an element of a love story does NOT make it a romance. The romance needs to be the main focus of the book for me if it is to be called a romance!
Hi everyone! Thanks for all the answers and I'm sorry for not stopping by sooner. I've had company in town and computer time has been sadly limited! :)
January 22, 2010 7:11 AMI see so many great answers! For those who love their heroines strong but still feminine, I agree. That's one of my musts. But I've gotta say Booklover 1335, I relate to your answer the most! I love so many genres, especially urban fantasy, but when I pick up a book that says romance on the spine, I want my happy ending. Mislabeling is the worst! :)
Great interview!! Miami Heat looks like a great read.
January 23, 2010 9:47 AMI would have to say too much sex, maybe too soon or just not at the right time in the book or sometimes too much. You need some sex and I like it hot at the right times, but too often it is just there !!!!
magnolias_1@msn.com
my biggest pet peeve in romance would be that sometimes it seems as if the heroine will not believe she is loved by the hero and does stupid things over and over and then finally realizes that he was sincere. Yuck.
