Here is a little background about the book:
Loup Garron was born and raised in Santa Olivia, an isolated, disenfranchised town next to a US military base inside a DMZ buffer zone between Texas and Mexico. A fugitive "Wolf-Man" who had a love affair with a local woman, Loup's father was one of a group of men genetically-manipulated and used by the US government as a weapon. The "Wolf-Men" were engineered to have superhuman strength, speed, sensory capability, stamina, and a total lack of fear, and Loup, named for and sharing her father's wolf-like qualities, is marked as an outsider. After her mother dies, Loup goes to live among the misfit orphans at the parish church, where they seethe from the injustices visited upon the locals by the soldiers. Eventually, the orphans find an outlet for their frustrations: They form a vigilante group to support Loup Garron who, costumed as their patron saint, Santa Olivia, uses her special abilities to avenge the town.
I am kinda excited about this one as a huge GS fan I am working my through her booklist. Gena Showalter is re-releasing this earlier book Playing with Fire. It is a stand alone and not one of her many series of books, although I was under the impression is was the first in a series, but no other's have followed? PWF will be out November 09 , Beware though Gena likes to write in 1st person and this is no exception. Below is the synopsis. Happy Reading:
Earth, Wind & Fire aren't just a band anymore . . .
Used to be my greatest achievement was holding a job more than three days. Now suddenly I can shoot fireballs, chill your drink, or blow-dry your hair at fifty paces with a blink of my eye!
It all started when this crazy scientist dropped something in my Grande Mocha Latte. Of course I got wicked sick. Next morning I'm waking up with this total hottie bending over me. He tells me 1)his name's Rome Masters, 2)he's a government agent and 3)I can control the four elements with a thought.
He seems even less pleased by my (apparently irreversible) transformation than I am . . . Because now he'll have to kill me.
Ok, I LOVED IT!!! That is all I have to say!! .... OK kidding. This is the first book I have read from Jami Alden and I do believe she's hooked me! Now I was doing my daily browsing on booksonboard.com and as foolish as it sounds I liked the cover! Yummy. Now I have been disappointed before by doing that, but I have to say I was more than pleasantly surprised. What bothers me most, yes I know I read romance for the juicy bits and not the who done it, but it is a wonderful surprise not to have figured out the "bad guy" until the end. I swore it was one person while it was another. Maybe I am just dense.
The story starts with our hero Derek Taggart, one of the Gemeni Men (a private security agency ran with his brothers) working a detail for the Van Weldt Jeweler. In walks Alyssa Miles, Alyssa is a socialite and a paparazzi target (think Paris Hilton). But at first he doesn't know who she is. Even when she goes home with him that night.
Per Father and Step Mother are involved in a murder-suicide and as a result Derek is hired with the 24/7 protection detail of Alyssa. He was hired by her uncle and learns who Alyssa really is. A spoiled little reach girl with a drug habit. But Alyssa has long since put her party days behind her and wants deseparately to prove her worth in the Van Weldt company. Adamant that they are not trafficking blood diamonds, she believes in the company but her uncle Harold won't let her get involved beyond the posing in the ad campaigns. During the time that Derek is covering Alyssa he is slowly falling in love with her and vise versa. But he is forced by working for her uncle to report Alyssas blackouts and public drunkenness. While she protests that someone is doing this to her she has no idea how to prove it or stop it. Derek starts to believe her and together they try to discover who would want Alyssa out of the picture. Well, that would be just about everyone. Her assistant is sneaky and jealous, her step sister is supportive behind closed doors but doesn't stand up for her when it comes to the family business, her uncle hates her and thinks she is a drunk, a coke head and a joke. And then there is the international diamond dealer that is obsessed with her. It is a fun read, a fast read and will keep you guessing on all the players and just how they all fall into this puzzle.
I should have started with CAUGHT, which is the prequel if you will staring Derek's twin Ethan. But if it is as good as Kept was I won't mind working my way backwards.

Wow, where do I begin? First I have to say I was pretty peeved, I was reading my little heart out and come to page 304 I turned the page and what do you know..... the publisher's mis-printed and RE-posted pages 205-279 all over again. So I rummaged through the book quickly hoping I just ended up with some extra pages. No luck, I lost about 77 pages altogether. So regardless I have to say that I loved the book at a whole. I have always wanted to hear Rehv's story and although I do like
There are three main story arcs unfurling simultaneously, these include Rehvenge/Ehlena, John Matthew/Xhex and Wrath.
Rehvenge/Ehlena: I loved how strong Ehlena was and dealing with her father’s illness, their financial issues and her love for Rehv. As a nurse working for Haver’s trying to support her szitsophrenic father I adore the fact that after they come into their inheritance she doesn’t stop being true to herself (ie: shopping at Target). She is brave as she struggles daily with her father while finding love with Rehv. When Ehlena discovers who Rehv really is, it broke my hear cause you knew that Rehv’s was breaking at the same time. I wished there was more romance between the two but their love story was still strong without more juicy details as in JR Ward’s previous books. Ehlena is strong and fierce as she fights for Rhev and to get him back, the scorpions I have to say I didn’t like that part, I was little unimpressed by the lack of suspense as well.
John Matthew/Xhex: JM is my fav, how could you not fall in love with him since the beginning. I enjoyed how JR Ward made him struggle with his feelings of abandonment from Thor, his only “father figure” and Xhex. I have to admit she isn’t my first choice, I would have much rather seen him with someone the likes of Payne, but Xhex’s inner core came out a little more with book #7 and she is growing on me… slowly. I look forward to book 8 which is no doubt John Matthew/Xhex. I feel better that his feelings towards Xhex though were resolved that he was to rescue her as she was his mate.
Other worthy mentions are Lash and Tohr (and of course his sidekick Lassiter). Both play significant secondary roles. Minor roles are taken up by Tez, iAm, Payne, Blay and Qhuinn.
I loved Lassiter’s humor with Thor and I am happy that JR Ward didn’t make Tohr a victim anymore towards the end of the book. I thought his love story with Wellsie was classic and again broke my heart when she died, but he was a strong member of the Brotherhood and it is nice to see him back on his way.
