In Wade Halverson's debut novel Life After 187 we are introduced with a bang to Kane Silver, who grew up with a tough as nails, hard-ass of a father who was in the Army Special Forces, a man who accepted no excuses and expected answers. And that is exactly what Kane gave his dad, he too followed in his footsteps serving in the Special Forces and Special Ops, starting his Army Career at age seventeen. Thing is, some pretty scummy guys raped and murdered his wife in a botched robbery. Not home in time to save her after she is able to stop one man by stabbing him in the eye (gross I know, but think of how she felt), Kane kills the others in cold blood technically. Thus ended up in prison under Warden Quentin Bane, who at first I really liked, then I hated, but in the end I once again change my mind. Why you ask all the back and forth? Wade Halverson does a great job to just giving you enough information about Kane's upbringing and the personality of Quentin to suck you in from the first page one. You know that Kane is a completely upstanding and great guy, thing is I thought the same of the Quentin as well, at first. He likes to watch bare knuckle fights which are viewed only by invite by the rich and famous, high dollar stakes were talking about and extremely illegal. Through some luck they boys, Kane, Valentino & Si' Ling all escape prison and as they develop more of a trusting relationship and deal with being "free" men it is really a wonderful and powerful dynamic. But no time for sitting on the sand and enjoying the sunset. They are on the run, and my heart was pumping a mile a minute through their adventures that take them all over the word including Argentina, Costa Rica, Hong Kong and more.
It was a pleasant surprise to find so much humor in this book because frankly I wasn't expecting it and much less from a book about the lives of men who escape from prison! But through their travels and as their bond grows with each adventure & fight they find themselves in Argentina helping a woman save her parents from a Drug Lord. I so love the suspense and for someone like me who knows diddly of the fighting world I found this book such an easy read with the words and even the descriptions of the flights easy to imagine in my own head as the action played out. Wade's extensive experience in kickboxing shows through in his storytelling from the first page. A must read for anyone seeking a little action with a hell of a great story! I underestimated this story and I was blown away with how much I truly, truly liked it!!!
Synopsis: "Sentenced to life in prison when he executes the men who murdered his wife, Kane Silver is singled out by the warden for his fighting ability. Along with inmates Valentino Lopez and Si’Ling Lee, Kane is drafted into service and forced to fight for money in high-stakes tournaments. But when the three friends escape during a New Year’s Eve match in Lake Tahoe—saving the warden’s life in the process—their situation becomes more complicated.
Their status undetermined, they vanish underground and sign on to help a young woman whose parents are being held by an Argentinean drug kingpin. Follow Kane and his friends as they compete and grow closer while rediscovering what it means to be free. From Lake Tahoe and the western United States to Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Buenos Aires, and Thailand, Life After 187 takes readers on an exhilarating ride filled with big money, intense action, justice, and the pursuit of honor.
