To Rate or Not to Rate, that is the Question....

I have read a lot of blogs, most recently on J. Kaye's blog concerning ratings and it is pretty interesting, as I do agree not to bash books on my personal blog. I do feel that I might need to adopt a rating system though? I so like her only 3 stars rating and would like to incorporate that myself. Like I said I won't be book bashing with any bad reviews from books I didn't like, usually because if I didn't like them at all then I have already set the book aside and moved on without finishing in most cases (assuming they are that terrible, which admittedly some are!). How can I do a review without finishing? And trust me, if I hate it that much, I won't be wasting my time, my TBR list is far too long to linger. So, with all my babbling I have decided to incorporate a rating system. Let me know what you think, I would welcome and appreciate any helpful suggestions in re-tooling this rating system or any constructive criticism or perhaps you think I shouldn't do it at all? I would like to hear what you think?

This is what I was thinking:

5 stars- LOVED IT! Counldn't put it down!

4 stars- A Page Turner, bring on the sequel

3 stars- Like eating one chip, leaves you longing for more, would still recommend

I think there's value in mentioning books that you thought were one star or you weren't able to finish...

I agree with Chris. Like you, I do not agree with book bashing, but since the bloggers I read have similiar tastes to mine, I do appreciate their thoughts on books they did not like. I may still buy the book because things you do not like about it may not necessarily be the same as mine, but at least I get a feel for the book through your review.

I like your rating system description. *g*

I think to is okay to mention you didn't a book and a brief statement at to why. But I don't think you should a lot of time and effort into it. I've seen where some blogs do this in a post as passing mention. Because like you said with an overflowing TBR, time is a wasting. Plus, if you don't finish a book, just how much can you say about it?

Ultimately, you should do what you feel most comfortable with.

Thanks everyone!! I know I too don't mind writing a review for a so so book and think if I add two or one star that could get MY personal opinion across without trashing the book.... thanks ;-) I think I will do that!

About Me

My Photo
Brande
I am a working mom with an addiction to coffee, chocolate, and books.. I read an average 3 to 4 books a week to escape reality. I have setup this site to organize my own thoughts and help others when choosing what to read. Since I can be a dimwit at times I decided to keep a record of the books I read. This record turned into reviews so I would remember if I liked the book I forgot I had read. I am not particularily funny and my grammer sucks so please don’t expect much. Basically I don’t know jack about many things, but I do know what I like in a novel and what makes me want to spend my money on an author.
